were the observed. Reines and Martin Perl shared the 1995 Nobel prize in physics for their pioneering experimental contributions to lepton physics.

Reines, Frederick
I received my undergraduate degree in engineering in 1939 and a Master of Science degree in mathematical physics in 1941 at Steven Institute of Technology. It was during this period in 1940, that I married Sylvia Samuels. We have two children, Robert G., who currently lives in Ojo Sarco, New Mexico, and Alisa K Cowden, of Trumansburg, New York, and six grandchildren.
Over the years, a number of other intriguing experimental ideas and areas of investigation have been the objects of my attention, and I have devoted some time and effort to exploring the inherent possbilities. These include: the search for relic neutrinos; the"neutrino Mossbauer effect", in which a photon is replaced by a neutrino; the measurement of the gravitational constant, G, the most poorly measured non-nuclear fundamental constant by several orders of magnitude; a spherical lens space telescope; attempting to set more stringent limits on violation of the Pauli Exclusion Principle; exploration of the brain using ultra-sound; and a variety of new detector ideas. These scientific concepts, goals and challenges continue to excite and stimulate my interest. From Les Prix Nobel1995.

Reines shared the Nobel Prize with physicist Martin Lewis Perl , who also discovered a fundamental particle, the tau. Reines was educated at Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, N.J. From 1944 to 1959 he conducted research in particle physics and nuclear weaponry at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico; in 1951 he oversaw experiments designed for the testing of nuclear weapons in the Marshall Islands. Professor Emeritus
Frederick Reines, a pioneer in the field of neutrino physics and one of the founding deans of the University of California, Irvine, died on August 26, 1998 at the age of 80. Reines' many contributions to elementary particle physics, in both his extensive studies of neutrinos and his ardent investigation of fundamental conservation laws, brought him many honors and great distinction. By showing that it was possible to detect and study neutrinos experimentally, Reines opened the door to a new, fertile and exciting area of particle physics. His own investigations, throughout his long career, contributed broadly and seminally to our understanding of the neutrino. For the first detection of the neutrino, which was accomplished with his Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory colleague Clyde L. Cowan Jr. in 1956, Reines shared the 1995 Nobel Prize in Physics. The first experimental detection of the neutrino defied conventional wisdom. Until its detection, the neutrino had enjoyed an anomalous status. It was postulated by Wolfgang Pauli in 1930 to solve the problem of the apparent violation of conservation laws in nuclear beta decay, and named and incorporated by Enrico Fermi in his 1934 theoretical formulation of the weak interactions. However, most physicists thought the neutrino interacted far too weakly to be detectable. For Reines, this was a philosophically intolerable situation, one he often characterized as endowing the neutrino with the properties of a poltergeist. The neutrino would have to be detected to achieve the status of a particle. Following the successful observation, Reines vigorously pursued the study of the neutrino, achieving many "firsts" in the exploration of its properties and interactions, and eventually saw "neutrino physics" mature into a field of its own.

Nagroda Nobla w dziedzinie fizyki w roku 1995 przypad³a ³owcom cz±stek elementarnych: Frederickowi Reinesowi, który odkry³ neutrino, i Martinowi L. Perlowi, który z³apa³ taon.
Najwiêkszym osi±gniêciem fizyki XX wieku jest poznanie tajemnicy budowy materii. Sk³ada siê ona z niezwykle ma³ych cegie³ek - tzw. cz±stek elementarnych.
£owienie cz±stek to jedno z najbardziej ulubionych zajêæ fizyków, choæ przypomina szukanie ig³y w stogu siana. "£owców" jest du¿o, a i w ci±gu kilkudziesiêciu lat z³owiono ca³± mena¿eriê cz±stek. Ale nie wszystkie odkrycia s± sobie równe. Frederick Reines i Martin L. Perl wyró¿nili siê z³owieniem jednych z najwa¿niejszych okazów.
