PIONEERS OF ACOUSTICS Lord Rayleigh 1842-1919 This article refers to John William Strutt as Rayleigh throughout, although he did not succeed to the title until he was 30 years old. He was one of the very few members of higher nobility to win fame as an outstanding scientist. His father was the second Baron Rayleigh of Terling Place, Witham in the county of Essex. It was a family that had little connection with science for its members were mostly landowners with extensive holdings and interests in the countryside. One exception was Robert Boyle - a distant relation. Lord Rayleigh
at his desk
The Rayleigh title was originally given to his grandmother, Charlotte, on her husband’s suggestion. Joseph Holden Strutt had declined personal honours throughout his life, and probably did not wish to be raised to the peerage as he would then have been obliged to resign his seat in the House of Commons. The title had been offered by George III in recognition of Joseph’s duties in the army and in Parliament. On Charlotte’s death in 1836, the title passed to their only son John James Strutt, who became the second Baron Rayleigh. John James Strutt, a deeply religious man, led the life of a country squire in Essex, north-east of London. Aged 46, he married Clara Elizabeth LaTouche Vicars, who was only 17 at the time. John William, their eldest son, was born on 12 November 1842 at Langford Grove, near Maldon, Essex.

RAYLEIGH 1842 - 1919 John William Strutt Lord Rayleigh Born: 12 Nov 1842 in Langford Grove (near Maldon), Essex, England Died: 30 June 1919 in Terling Place, Witham, Essex, England John William Strutt suffered from poor health and his schooling at Eton and Harrow was disrupted and for four years he had a private tutor. He entered Trinity College, Cambridge in 1861, graduating in 1864. His first paper in 1865 was on Maxwell's electromagnetic theory. He worked on propagation of sound and, while on an excursion to Egypt taken for health reasons, Strutt wrote Treatise on Sound (1870-1). In 1879 he wrote a paper on travelling waves, this theory has now developed into the theory of solitons. His theory of scattering (1871) was the first correct explanation of why the sky is blue. In 1873 he succeeded to the title of Baron Rayleigh. From 1879 to 84 he was the second Cavendish professor of experimental physics at Cambridge succeeding Maxwell. Then in 1884 he became secretary of the Royal Society. Rayleigh discovered the inert gas argon in 1895, work which earned him a Nobel Prize, in 1904. He was awarded the De Morgan Medal of the London Mathematical Society in 1890 and was president of the Royal Society between 1905 and 1908. He became chancellor of Cambridge University in 1908.

Blodgett, Katharine (Burr)
An industrial physicist and physical chemist who is known for her work in surface chemistry. She is especially known for her work in monomolecular and multilayer films (termed "Blodgett films") and her invention of non-reflecting ("invisible") glass, which is used in optical instruments.
Brown, Robert
Although primarily a botanist, Brown is known to colloid science for his 1827 discovery that dispersed particles in water move about randomly, even when the water itself appears motionless. The phenomenon, explained later by others, is due to bombardments of the particles by water molecules and is known as Brownian motion.
Coulter, Wallace
An electrical engineer best known as the discoverer of the Coulter principle, a sensing-zone method for automatically counting and sizing microscopic particles suspended in a liquid. He developed this into the "Coulter Counter" which was first applied to the complete blood count diagnostic test, and later applied to other colloids in a variety of other industries.

Lord Rayleigh had an interest in abnormal psychological investigations, and became a member and vicepresident of the Society for Psychical Research. He was one of the original members of the Order of Merit, instituted in connection with the coronation of King Edward VII. In 1904 he was awarded a Nobel prize, and at the end of 1905 he became president of the Royal Society, of which he had been elected a fellow in 1873, and had acted as secretary from 1885 to 1896. He remained president till 1908, in which year he was chosen to succeed the 8th duke of Devonshire as chancellor of Cambridge University. Rayleigh and Ramsay
Sir William Ramsay (1852-1916) and Lord Rayleigh (born John William Strutt, 1842-1919) published their discovery of argon in 1895. In terms of the periodic table, the discovery was significant. It presented scientists with a new element for which there was no place in the periodic table. But it also suggested that there should be a family of such elements, and led to the discovery of other noble gases. Ramsay and Rayleigh were both awarded Nobel Prizes in 1904. Rayleigh was awarded the physics prize for discovery of argon. Ramsay was awarded the chemistry prize for argon and the family of noble gases. Read this illustrated biography of Rayleigh
