Norman Foster Ramsey
was born in Washington, D.C. on 27 August 1915. He married the late Elinor Jameson on June 3, 1940 and four daughters were added to the family. Ramsey was educated in the United States and England; he earned five degrees in physics including the Ph.D. (Columbia 1940) and the D.Sc. (Cambridge, 1964). Ramsey's scientific research focussed on the properties of molecules, atoms, nuclei and elementary particles and includes key contributions to the knowledge of magnetic moments, the structural shape of nuclear particles, the nature of nuclear forces, the thermodynamics of energized populations of atoms and molecules (e.g. those in masers and lasers) and spectroscopy. During World War II, Ramsey joined the M.I.T. Radiation Laboratory where he headed the groups that developed the first three centimeter wavelength magnetrons and the related radar systems. Later he became a group leader at the Los Alamos Laboratory. After the war, Ramsey returned to Columbia University until 1947 when he joined the faculty at Harvard; he became Higgins Professor of Physics in 1966.

Norman Ramsey Interview (June 20, 1991) This interview is part of the Rad Lab Collection Norman F. Ramsey, Jr. served as a member of the Radiation Laboratory from 1940-1943. He began his tenure as a Group Leader in the research of magnetrons. From January to March 1941 he worked in the development of X-band magnetrons. In 1941 and 1942, he focused on first waveguide plumbing, TR (transmit-receive unit) box, X-band ground, airborne systems, AIA (airborne interception of aircraft), ASD (X-band aircraft-to-surface vessel), and H2X experiments. He served as group leader of AIA, ASD, and liaison production between May and December 1942. In the summer of 1941, he was Rad Lab liaison to the British labs. His last assignment (December 1942-September 1943) was on the staff of Edward L. Bowles, in the office of the Secretary of War, Henry L. Stimson, assigned as technical consultant to the Director of Military Requirements, Army Air Corps. He relocated to Los Alamos in 1943. Ramsey describes his early educational background, his transition from engineering to science, and his recruitment to the Radiation Laboratory. He recalls the errors and successes of the early planning committees at Rad Lab, and the laboratory's interactions with both private industry and the military. He recounts the various stages of design and the drastic improvements in microwave technology within his group at Rad Lab. He describes the transfer of technology between Britain and the United States and the information exchange that occurred within the Rad Lab itself. His working relationship with many colleagues at Rad Lab and Los Alamos, particularly Oliphant, Rabi, and Oppenheimer receive consideration. He also discusses the effect of Rad Lab on his later career at Fermilab, Brookhaven, and Harvard.

In April, 1963 Norman F. Ramsey, physicist from Harvard University, presented the report of the Panel on High Energy Acdelerator Physics of the General Advisory Committee to the Atomic Energy Commission and the President's Science Advisory Committee, which he chaired. This report recommended the design and construction of a 200 GeV accelerator. In 1965 Ramsey was elected a Regional Trustee of Universities Research Association, Inc. (URA), the organization given the primary contract by the Atomic Energy Commission to operate and manage the 200 GeV federal project, then called the National Accelerator Laboratory (NAL). The next year he became President of URA. In December 1966 the Weston, Illinois site was selected for the location of NAL and the next month Robert R. Wilson was named Founding Director of the project. Ramsey remained President of URA until 1982 and his involvement with URA and NAL continues to the present
