Human Genetics Center Contact Information Research Interests: Molecular genetics; genetics of common disease; gene structure and expression in atherosclerosis The research in my laboratory is focused on identification of genes that underlie predisposition to common diseases such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes. We apply molecular methodologies to determine the role of gene structure, variation, and expression in the pathogenesis of common diseases. Recently, my laboratory has turned to new genomic technologies to identify novel genes that influence common diseases and their measured risk factors. A tutorial in my laboratory would provide experience in discovery and typing of genetic polymorphisms, basic cloning and sequencing methods, and mapping genes for common diseases. RC TALK
Ichthus '04: Lessons learned amid mud, misery
By Rich Copley
HERALD-LEADER ARTS WRITER

The campers have been gone for nearly a week, but Ichthus Festival organizers will be grappling with the aftereffects of this year's event for the next year, if not longer. To recap: As campers began to arrive April 22, the festival grounds were soaked by heavy rains. Grass and dirt soon turned into mud, which swallowed the wheels of vans and recreational vehicles, creating tremendous problems getting people into the festival site and backing up traffic for hours on surrounding roads, particularly U.S. 68. Ichthus directors will spend the next several months figuring out how to apply the lessons they learned last weekend. They also will have to deal with the financial, psychological and public relations damage that the mess inflicted on the festival and Wilmore. "The town council is aware, Ichthus is aware; we know we have to improve the service to have value in this community," said Wilmore Mayor Harold Rainwater we will pause to let you consider the irony of that name in the context of this column.

About Rainwater Observatory
The Rainwater Observatory and Planetarium is an educational ministry of French Camp Academy . Even though we do have some research-grade equipment, the facility's mission is primarily educational. We share this facility with interested amateur astronomers, school science classes, scout, church, or civic groups. The observatory site is located on State Highway 413 just off of the Natchez Trace Parkway in central Mississippi near the village of French Camp (about halfway between Jackson and Tupelo). Travel Information
Observatory Facilities
The 14" Celestron is housed in one of the nine buildings on the hill. For daytime viewing, we have five telescopes with three different kinds of Solar filters (H-alpha, glass, and mylar) as well as solar projection. Our daytime exhibits include a 300 foot scale model solar system, a large wall-mounted solar projection Analema/Calendar, sun clock, sundials, an 80' circumference celestial sphere, and a full-sized Stonehenge model that shows solstice and equinox sunrise and sunset points. These exhibits are used to demonstrate the Earth's motion and axial tilt, the eccentricity of the Earth's orbit and how the ancients predicted eclipses. Narrated slide presentations and talks on selected astronomical topics are available to visiting groups on request. An outdoor amphitheater and picnic/camping area are just down the hill from the Observatory.
Planetarium
The planetarium and museum houses an extensive collection of astronomy education materials, meteroite collection, and library
