His parents were married in or before 1735. In 1754, he served in the Granville Co., NC militia - something which under normal circumstances he would not have done before the age of 16. We therefore place the year of his birth between 1735 and 1738. Little is known of James Rainwater. He left no marriage record, no will, no family Bible. All that is known of him comes from property records, militia records and the occasional service on a jury ( see Evidence for Early Rainwaters, prior to 1800 ). As I have assembled these lists, it has become apparent that the children of two different families have been routinely confused with one another - that is, the children of James Rainwater of North Carolina, and James Rainwater of Sevier Co., Tennessee. The difficulty for many researchers is that James is the link from their provable ancestors to John Rainwater and Mary Fussell. So far, none has been able to satisfactorily prove the names of James's children. What we have is a tradition of these children, with nothing on which to base it. Over the years I have collected a number of lists of James Rainwater's children. I don't reproduce them here to humiliate the originators but to illustrate the thorny problem of proving descent from James. Just to further complicate things, the existance of many of the individuals on these lists in not in question - merely the identity of their parents.

RAINWATER I wish that I could say that alot is known about this family, but unfortunately, I cannot. Thanks alot in part to the war torn south during the Civil War. This family has been traced through most of the southern states, with numerous intersting stories! The few things that are known are : William Rainwaters married Caroline Davis in Marengo county Alabama, April 28, 1828. William was born in 1806 in TN, Caroline in 1811 SC. They had R.E. "Edward" 1830 AL ( our line ), Hannah, 1832 AL, Nancy 1834 AL, Thomas 1836 AL, Martha 1838 AL. In 1843, William Rainwaters married a Sydney Farmer, in AL. The following children were born after 1838. William M. 1844 MS, Mary 1845 MS, George W. 1847 MS, Samuel H. 1848 MS, John Calvin 1856 MS, and Benjamin Franklin 1858 MS. With that information and that of William M, being born in 1844, I am assuming that the rest of the children were Sydney's and William's. William Rainwaters , the father of these children, and spouse of Caroline, and Sydney, was murdered by 2 of his sons "for hire" in Wayne County MS, 1866. Our line continues as follows: R.E. His parents, Mary Ann Perry and Jeremiah Henley married February 13, 1813 at Henleyfield, Hancock, Ms. Jeremiah was born 1775 in Orange county, North Carolina and Mary Ann in about 1790. She is the daughter of Burrell Perry and Mary Ann Rainwater. Mary Ann Rainwater Perry has proven to be quite an enigma. No record has been found documenting her marriage or parentage. She is enumerated in the 1850 Hancock county, Mississippi census in her daughter’s household, Rebecca and James Wood McGeehee. From this census her birthdate and place are estimated as about 1768 in North Carolina. The 1860 Hancock county census is missing and prior to 1850 only the head of household was enumerated by name; hence, we can not track her any more precisely in the censuses. Very little is known of her life except that she apparently accompanied her husband from North Carolina through Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana during the late 1790s and early 1800s. Whether she accompanied him to Texas in the early 1830s or not is unknown for certain. Whether she did or remained in Louisiana and Mississippi these things are known: 1) Mary Ann was alive in 1850 in Mississippi. 2) Burrell Perry was married to Jane Batts in Texas in 1838.

However, in general, the quality is very good. The softness of rainwater is valued for its cleaning abilities and benign effects on water-using equipment. As an irrigation source, its acidity is helpful in the high PH soils of our region and, as one would expect, is the best water for plants.
