Why was Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin assassinated in 1995?
Yitzhak Rabin In the early 1990s Israel embarked on the so-called "peace process" , starting with the Madrid conference in 1991 under the leadership of the Labor Party of Shimon Peres with Yitzhak Rabin as Prime Minister . The time seemed right for negotiations with Yasser Arafat and the PLO and that approach was acceptable to most of the Israeli public and the political parties of the Israeli Left. But others in Israel were not convinced; Likud and the Israeli Right were critical of the policy and claimed it risked putting Israel's future in the hands of terrorists dedicated to Israel's destruction. On May 4, 1994 the newly created

INDICE PROTAGONISTI

Six years after, Israel's Right revisits Rabin assassination The true legacy of Yitzhak Rabin
By Avi Davis November 1, 2001
The crowd that gathered in Yitzhak Rabin Square in Tel Aviv this week was smaller than in the past. While political leaders mounted the stage and delivered their usual encomia to the slain leader, there was a sense that the annual ritual was losing some of its meaning. For years, throughout the Jewish world, communities have remembered Yitzhak Rabin's slaying as a dividing line between peace and war. It should be unsurprising then that since 1995, his commemorative services have come to resemble more campaign rallies for the peace process than dedications to the man himself. This has resulted in a curiously Jewish form of beatification: Yitzhak Rabin as patron saint of peace. All of which, would have made Rabin sick to his stomach. A man who was both short on ceremony and suspicious of praise, he would have had no patience for the sycophantism that obsesses so many on the left whenever his name is mentioned. He would have been equally flustered by the projection of his policies into the future. It is well known that before his assassination, Rabin had already experienced grave misgivings about Oslo and the logic of the process he had initiated. Said to have described the Oslo Process as "the bastard child I was forced to adopt," Yitzhak Rabin was too smart a military man to ignore the calamity that awaited Israel if his gamble on Yasser Arafat's bona fides failed.

Yitzhak Rabin: An Appreciation
By Harvey Sicherman November 1995
Vol. 2, No. 3
Harvey Sicherman, Ph.D., is President of the Foreign Policy Research Institute. He was an aide to three U.S. secretaries of state.
From General to Statesman
Political Rebirth The Lebanon War, like the Yom Kippur War, rescued Rabin. A national unity government, headed by Shimon Peres with Yitzhak Shamir as deputy, was created to take Israel out of Lebanon and to stabilize its runaway economy. After two years, Shamir became Prime Minister. But most remarkably, Rabin remained Defense Minister throughout. Shamir proved much less enthusiastic about this scheme than Rabin for elementary reasons. Rabin did not see autonomy as an end in itself but rather the only way to diffuse the Intifada and rid Israel of responsibility for the Arab population. This could lead eventually to an Arab sovereignty over part of the territories, anathema to Shamir and the Likud. Moreover, Rabin knew that the local Palestinians would not act decisively without the PLO, and unlike Shamir, he was prepared to give the PLO an indirect role on the Palestinian negotiating team. In 1990, the Unity Government collapsed over this point when the Bush administration looked like it might produce the Palestinians. Following some frantic bidding, Shamir outmaneuvered Peres and formed a Likud government. Rabin was out. And once more, Peres bested him in retaining control of the Labour Party.

Slaves of the Sword Yitzhak Rabin Directed by Paul Jenkins
Produced by Liran Atzmor and Noemi Schory Executive Producer Esther van Messel
"I consider myself to be in the army of peace today." In a speech to the United States Congress as long ago as 1974, soldier turned statesman Yitzhak Rabin described his own campaign to bring harmony to the Middle East. A former general, the Israeli leader shook hands with many enemies from his military past, and ultimately lost his life in the name of reconciliation. An introverted, independent child, the young Rabin was nevertheless influenced by his mother Rosa, a central figure in Tel Aviv's underground Jewish army. He soon abandoned agricultural school to join the Palmah, an elite military unit that would take on Arabs. After fighting in World War II, Rabin commanded a brigade during Israel's 1948 War of Independence, where his tactical expertise earned him the accolade of "Analytical Brain" and many calls to join the government.

Amal Remembers Yitzhak Rabin and His Struggle for Peace
Although Yitzhak Rabin spent much of his life at war, he spent the last years of his
life in a struggle for peace. " There is no path that is without pain ", he declared
in his last speech . "I fought so long as there was no chance for peace. I believe
that there is now a chance for peace, a great chance. We must take advantage of
it...". Using John Lennon's famous words "give peace a chance" Rabin went on to
say that there are many difficulties and pain on the way to peace, but that "the path of
peace is preferable to the path of war." How his speech seemed to foreshadow his
fate: the pain he must have felt as the bullets from the gun of a fellow Jew went
through his body on the night of the biggest peace rally ever held in Tel Aviv.

Rabin was assassinated in 1995 at a peace rally in Tel Aviv because he had indicated a willingness to cede Israeli-occupied territory in the interests of peace with neighboring Arab nations. Rabin had led efforts to negotiate peace settlements between Israel and neighboring Arabs. Born in Jerusalem, in British-controlled Palestine (now Israel), Rabin attended the Kadoorie Agricultural High School from which he graduated with honors. Dedicated to serving his country, Rabin joined the Palmach, the secret commando unit of the Haganah (the major underground Jewish militia), shortly after its formation in 1941. During World War II (1939-1945), the Palmach worked with the United Kingdom to fight the influence of the Germans and their allies in the Middle East. Rabin was appointed a Palmach platoon commander in 1943 and deputy battalion commander in 1944. During these years, he established himself as one of the leading thinkers in the Palmach.

    Who Murdered Yitzhak Rabin?
    By Barry Chamish
It took almost two years for the American public to suspect a conspiracy was involved in the Kennedy assassination. It took less than two weeks before suspicions arose among many Israelis that Rabin was not murdered by a lone gunman. The first to propose the possibility, on November 11, one week following the assassination, was Professor Michael Hersiger, a Tel Aviv University historian. He told the Israeli press, "There is no rational explanation for the Rabin assassination. There is no explaining the breakdown. In my opinion there was a conspiracy involving the Shabak. It turns out the murderer was in the Shabak when he went to Riga. He was given documents that permitted him to buy a gun. He was still connected to the Shabak at the time of the murder." Hersiger’s instincts were right, but he believed the conspirators were from a right wing rogue group in the Shabak. It wasn’t long before suspicions switched to the left. On the 16th of November, a territorial leader and today Knesset Member Benny Eilon called a press conference during which he announced, "There is a strong suspicion that Eyal and Avishai Raviv not only were connected loosely to the Shabak but worked directly for the Shabak. This group incited the murder. I insist that not only did the Shabak know about Eyal, it founded and funded the group." The public reaction was basically, "Utter nonsense." Yet Eilon turned out to be right on the money. How did he know ahead of everyone else?
