Yitzhak Rabin
Country: Israel. Cause: Peace agreement between Israel and Palestinians. Background: Britain gains control of Palestine following the First World War, promising the formation of a Jewish homeland that will not "prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities". As Jewish immigration to Palestine increases and conflict between the Arab and Jewish communities escalates the British determine to partition Palestine into Arab and Jewish states. Partition is ratified by the United Nations (UN). The state of Israel is declared on 14 May 1948. During the subsequent 'War of Independence' with the surrounding Arab states Israel occupies Arab land not included in the partition plan. Israel occupies further Arab territory in the war of 1967. Tensions between the Arabs and Israelis continue to rise, culminating in the 'Intifada' in 1987. The only solution is a peaceful settlement with the Palestinians. Mini biography: Born on 1 March 1922 in Jerusalem, Palestine (now in Israel).

Born in Jerusalem while it was still under the British Mandate, Yitzhak Rabin served as Prime Minster of Israel twice - once succeeding Golda Meir 1974-1977 and then again 1992-1995. Although he won the Nobel Peace Prize with Yasser Arafat and Shimon Peres for their efforts to achieve peace between Israelis and Palestinians, Rabin encouraged the expansion of Jewish settlements which the Palestinians have so vigorously opposed and he himself did not seek the creation of an independent Palestinian state. A nation's leader gunned down. A patsy manipulated into place at the crucial moment. A conspiracy by the secret police. A government commission which issued a lone-gunman theory explaining the killing. And an "amateur photographer" who caught the whole thing on film. No, we're not talking about the Kennedy assassination. We're talking about the murder of Yitzhak Rabin, and his killers are still at large. Barry Chamish, editor of the political intelligence journal Inside Israel, probes the troubling evidence indicating a Rabin assassination conspiracy.

Just previous to the evening of November 4, 1995, Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was a very worried man. His peace process with the PLO was not going well with the Israeli public. The latest poll in the daily newspaper Maariv showed that 78 percent of the public wanted the process stopped until a national referendum was held to decide whether to continue or not. Only 18% of Israelis trusted Rabin enough to have him carry on his diplomacy without a public referendum. Rabin couldn't step out in public without being heckled. His most humiliating moment came in August when he was introduced at a soccer game and 40,000 fans jeered him in unison.
But that evening would be different. A coalition of left wing political parties and youth movements had organized a rally in support of him and Rabin knew that, for a change, he would be surrounded by thousands of well wishers.
Which made his murder that evening doubly unexpected. It all seemed so easy. At 9:15, Rabin ad-libbed a speech before 100,000 supporters gathered at a square outside Tel Aviv's city hall. A half hour later, he walked down the steps of the stage into the "sterile" area below where his car awaited him. Here he would be safe from threat because no one but approved security personnel were supposed to be there.

The assassination of a leader: Yitzhak Rabin
The assassination of Yitzhak Rabin would be an event that would touch not only a country, but the entire world.
For Israelis and the neighboring Arabian nation, peace was as close as it had ever been in 1995. Through out that year, acts of violence brought home the difficult task of finding a solution that would last to end the long conflicts between them. The most dreadful of those acts was the assassination of the Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, on November 4, 1995. Rabin had been a leader in the peace movement, and his death would trouble not only the Israelis, but people around the world. Yitzhak Rabin was involved in almost all of his country's history. He was born on March 1, 1922 in Jerusalem. Believe it or not, Rabin grew up planning to be a farmer. He was sidetracked by the movement to create a Jewish State. This prompted him to join the Palmach, which was an elite group in the Jewish underground army. After World War II, this was the group that fought to drive the British out of Palestine. In 1945, Rabin helped to free 200 Jewish refugees from a British detention camp. He was arrested and imprisoned. bodyOffer(27949) Rabin played a major role in the Arab-Israeli war the followed Israel's creation in 1948. After the war, he stayed in the military and became the chief of staff of the Israeli army in 1964. During this time, he helped to lead Israel to victory over Egypt, Syria, and Jordan in the Six-Day War of 1967. This victory tripled Israel's territory and, of course, made him a national hero.
