Isidor Isaac Rabi
Isidor Isaac Rabi
American physicist who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1944 for his invention (in 1937) of the atomic and molecular beam magnetic resonance method of observing atomic spectra.
Rabi's most important scientific work was his development (in the 1930s) of a method for measuring the magnetic properties of atoms, atomic nuclei, and molecules. The method is based on measuring the spin of the protons in the atom's core, a phenomenon known as nuclear magnetic moments. With the application of his magnetic resonance method, several mechanical and magnetic properties, as well as the shape, of an atomic nucleus can be deduced. The precise measurements yielded by this method made possible such subsequent applications as the atomic clock, the maser, and the laser, as well as the nuclear magnetic resonance imaging used in diagnostic medicine. Rabi's method provided the central technique for virtually all molecular and atomic beam experimentation.

Basov, Nikolay Gennadiyevich Soviet physicist and Nobel Laureate. Basov helped to develop both the laser and the maser, for which he shared the 1964 Nobel Prize in physics with Soviet physicist Aleksandr Mikhailovich Prokhorov and American physicist Charles Hard Townes. Basov, together with his teacher Prokhorov, conducted groundbreaking research in quantum mechanics, which concerns the behavior of atoms at different energy levels. They first deduced that quantum mechanics permits the amplification of microwaves and light waves by inducing atoms to release energy. This helped them construct the theoretical basis of the process now called microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation, or, more commonly, maser. The maser quickly found many applications for its ability to send strong microwaves in any direction and resulted in improvements in radar. The maser also provided the basis for an atomic clock that was far more accurate than any mechanical timepiece ever invented. Basov later helped develop the visible-light maser, or laser , which delivers infrared or visible light instead of microwaves. Both the maser and the laser can collect and amplify energy waves hundreds of times. They can also produce a beam with almost perfectly parallel light waves and little or no interference or static.

Isidor Isaac Rabi was born in Raymanov, Austria, on July 29, 1898, the son of David Rabi and Janet Teig. He was brought to the United States by his family, in 1899, and his early education was in New York City (Manhattan and Brooklyn). In 1919 he graduated Bachelor of Chemistry at Cornell University (New York). After three years in non-scientific occupation, he started postgraduate studies in physics at Cornell in 1921, which he later continued at Columbia University . In 1927 he received his Ph.D. degree for work on the magnetic properties of crystals. Aided by fellowships, he spent two years in Europe, working at different times with Sommerfeld, Bohr Pauli Stern , and Heisenberg . On his return in 1929 he was appointed lecturer in Theoretical Physics at Columbia University, and after promotion through the various grades became professor in 1937.
In 1940 he was granted leave from Columbia to work as Associate Director of the Radiation Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on the development of radar and the atomic bomb. In 1945 he returned to Columbia as executive officer of the Physics Department. In this capacity he is also concerned with the Brookhaven National Laboratory for Atomic Research, Long Island, an organization devoted to research into the peaceful uses of atomic energy.

Isidor Isaac Rabi was born in Raymanov, Austria, on July 29, 1898 and received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1927. In 1930 Rabi conducted investigations into the nature of the force binding protons to atomic nuclei. This research eventually led to the creation of the molecular-beam magnetic-resonance detection method, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1944. In 1940 he was granted leave from Columbia to work as Associate Director of the Radiation Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on the development of radar. He reluctantly agreed to serve as a visiting consultant who would come and go from Los Alamos. In this unusual capacity he was one of the very few exceptions to the strict security rules. General Groves made a special effort to bring Rabi, who had been a student with Oppenheimer and maintained a close and mutually respectful relationship, out to Los Alamos for the days leading up to the Trinity test so that he could help Oppenheimer maintain his sanity under such intense pressure. After the war he continued his research, which contributed to the inventions of the laser and the atomic clock. He was also one of the founders of Brookhaven Laboratory and the organization known as CERN. Rabi died on January 11, 1988.

    Isidor Rabi
A FEW months before Isidor Isaac Rabi died in early 1988, his doctors watched as he was gently moved into the bore of a magnetic-resonance-imaging machine. Once inside the machine, Rabi saw a distorted image of his face in the cylindrical surface surrounding him. "It was eerie," Rabi said. "I saw myself in that machine. I never thought my work would come to this." An eerie moment? Certainly - since Rabi's physical research led directly to magnetic resonance imaging, a technique that is widely used in hospitals today. For Rabi to see his life and work embodied in that distorted facial image as he approached his 90th birthday must have been haunting. But in a deeper sense, it was an affirming moment. His persona and his physics were an unbroken whole. The character of the man determined the style of his physics. For Rabi to see himself in his work was inevitable.
