Professor of Neurology and Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California , San Francisco, CA, USA Research interests : Stanley Prusiner discovered an entirely new class of pathogens that replicate without nucleic acid. Through this work, he created a new field of research that has resulted in significant progress in understanding degenerative diseases of the central nervous system (CNS). His revolutionary studies have made conceptual advances in elucidating mechanisms of age-dependent CNS diseases. Awards :

Prusiner, Stanley B. My history is not atypical of many Americans: born in the midwest, educated in the East, and now living in the West. My early years were shared between Des Moines, Iowa and Cincinnati, Ohio. Shortly after I was born on May 28, 1942 in Des Moines, my father, Lawrence, was drafted into the United States Navy. I was named for my father's younger brother who died of Hodgkin's disease at the age of 24. We moved to Boston briefly where my father enrolled in Naval officer training school before being sent to the south Pacific. He served as a communications officer for the remainder of World War II on an island called Eniwetok where the first hydrogen bomb was detonated a decade later.
During my time at Walnut Hills High School, I studied Latin for five years, which was to help me immensely later in the writing of scientific papers. But I found high school rather uninteresting and was most fortunate to be accepted by the University of Pennsylvania where I majored in Chemistry.
The intellectual environment of the University of Pennsylvania was extraordinarythere were so many internationally renowned scholars who were invariably receptive to the intrusions of undergraduate students even before the days of student evaluations of the faculty. The small size of the undergraduate student body undoubtedly contributed to the accessibility of the faculty. Besides numerous science courses, I had the opportunity to study philosophy, the history of architecture, economics, and Russian history in courses taught by extraordinarily knowledgeable professors. Although I was among the smallest of the heavyweight crew team members and thus had no chance of rowing in the varsity boat, I greatly enjoyed the many hours that I spent at this wonderful sport.

Stanley B. Prusiner
Neurologe, Biochemiker Stanley B. Prusiner * 28. Mai 1942 in den USA

    Stanley B Prusiner
    by Peter Ellis
Many people today are wary of eating beef because they fear that they may catch CJD, the human form of "mad-cow disease". News from France and Germany admitting that BSE (the scientific name of the disease) is present in cattle in those countries means that the problem will remain in public view. It is nearly thirty years since Stanley Prusiner became interested in CJD and related illnesses and started the work for which he received the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1997. To San Francisco
    A strange disease

One of the first patients Stanley met was suffering from Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD). This distressing illness slowly destroys the memory of the sufferer stopping them from carrying out even simple tasks. The fatal disease was thought to be caused by a slow acting virus. Stanley's interest grew when he found that there were other similar diseases in humans and animal. The Fore people of New Guinea suffered from "kuru", the laughing death, because they ceremonially ate the brains of their elders. Scrapie caused sheep and goats to lose coordination and develop an itch, which they scraped at so losing their wool or hair. All these diseases resulted in parts of the brain becoming spongy the nerve cells replaced by holes.

    Stanley B Prusiner:
Teachers' Notes The story of Stanley Prusiner is bound up with media interest in BSE and public fears about beef and vCJD. After nearly thirty years Prusiner's work is still controversial and the prion diseases carry many questions. New Scientist magazine (4/11/00 issue no.2263) reported and commented on the Phillips Report into BSE. Curriculum Links Prusiner's work and the BSE/CJD story are suitable for study at GCSE (Key Stage 4) and post GCSE level.

(viz Prusiner's papers, the response by the scientific community, the contribution of scientists to the study of BSE and the BSE inquiry) (b) how scientific controversies can arise from different ways of interpreting scientific evidence
(viz. the controversy over Prusiner's announcement of prions as an infectious agent not possessing DNA or RNA) (c) ways in which scientific work may be affected by the context in which it takes place
