was born on July 11th, 1916, in Australia. After the Great October Revolution he went in 1923 with his parents to the Soviet Union.
In 1934 Alexander Prochorov entered the Physics Department of the Leningrad State University. He attended lectures of Prof. V.A. Fock (quantum mechanics, theory of relativity), Prof. S.E. Frish (general physics, spectroscopy), and Prof. E.K.Gross (molecular physics). After graduating in 1939 he became a postgraduate student of the P.N. Lebedev Physical Institute in Moscow, in the laboratory of oscillations headed by Academician N.D. Papaleksi. There he started to study the problems of propagation of radio waves. In June 1941, he was mobilized in the Red Army. He took part in the Second World War and was wounded twice. After his second injury in 1944, he was demobilized and went back to the laboratory of oscillations of the P.N. Lebedev Physical Institute. There he began to investigate nonlinear oscillations under the guidance of Prof. S.M. Rytov.
In 1946 he defended his thesis on the theme Theory of Stabilization of Frequency of a Tube Oscillator in the Theory of a Small Parameter..

Basov).

Prokhorov, Aleksandr Mikhailovich u u r m E kh I u u r u f] Pronunciation Key Prokhorov, Aleksandr Mikhailovich , Russian physicist, b. Atherton, Queensland, Australia. In 1923 he was taken to the Soviet Union by his parents, who had emigrated to Australia to escape the czarist regime. In 1947 he began his research into the coherent radiation of electrons, followed by pioneering work in the field of radio-frequency spectroscopy. With N. G. Basov he created an oscillator based on the stimulated emission of electromagnetic waves by the excited molecules of a molecular beam. In the process of developing an ammonia-beam molecular oscillator, Prokhorov formulated the main principles of, and laid the physical foundation for, quantum electronics. For this work, which led to the construction of oscillators and amplifiers based on the maser laser principle, Prokhorov shared the 1964 Nobel Prize in Physics with Basov and C. H.

    Basov, Nikolay Gennadiyevich
Basov, Nikolay Gennadiyevich Soviet physicist and Nobel Laureate. Basov helped to develop both the laser and the maser, for which he shared the 1964 Nobel Prize in physics with Soviet physicist Aleksandr Mikhailovich Prokhorov and American physicist Charles Hard Townes. Basov, together with his teacher Prokhorov, conducted groundbreaking research in quantum mechanics, which concerns the behavior of atoms at different energy levels. They first deduced that quantum mechanics permits the amplification of microwaves and light waves by inducing atoms to release energy. This helped them construct the theoretical basis of the process now called microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation, or, more commonly, maser. The maser quickly found many applications for its ability to send strong microwaves in any direction and resulted in improvements in radar. The maser also provided the basis for an atomic clock that was far more accurate than any mechanical timepiece ever invented. Basov later helped develop the visible-light maser, or laser , which delivers infrared or visible light instead of microwaves. Both the maser and the laser can collect and amplify energy waves hundreds of times. They can also produce a beam with almost perfectly parallel light waves and little or no interference or static.
