Prelog voli cvijeæe i slatkiše. U naèelu ne pije alkoholna piæa. Srdaèan je i pristupaèan i voli druženje. Svojim duhovitim prièama i anegdotama o poznatim ljudima zna neumorno zabavljati društvo do u sitne sate. Cahn- Ingold- Prelog Sequence Rules The letters used to assign absolute stereochemistry based on the 'Cahn, Ingold, Prelog' 'Sequence Rules'. After assigning priorities to the substitutuents around an asymmetric centre the molecule is viewed such that the bond from the asymmetric centre to the substituent of lowest priority (4) is going away from the viewer, or into the page. If the remaining three groups from highest to lowest priority (1-2-3) appear clockwise then the asymmetric centre is designated as R. If the remaining three groups from highest to lowest priority (1-2-3) appear anticlockwise then the asymmetric centre is designated as S. R - rectus - right - clockwise
S - sinister - left - anticlockwise
R*/S*
(see also Erythro- and Threo-)
A system of nomeclature that replaces terms such as erythro- and threo-. Based around the Cahn, Ingold, Prelog system with the * indicating that the stereochemistry is only relative. Thus a compound designated as (2R*, 3R*, 4S*) represents two enantiomeric compounds. That is, it represents both (2R, 3R, 4S) and (2S, 3S, 4R).

Vladimir Prelog
Vladimir Prelog
Swiss chemist who shared the 1975 Nobel Prize for Chemistry with John W. Cornforth for his work on the stereochemistry of organic molecules and reactions.
Prelog was born in Sarajevo (Bosnia-Herzegovina), received early training at the University of Zagreb, then the Ph.D. at the Institute of Technology in Prague (1929). After a time on the faculty at Zagreb he moved to the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, where he, as director of the organic laboratory, followed in a long line of Nobelists (Willstatter, Staudinger, Kuhn and Ruzicka). Prelog was a superb teacher and lecturer, and was the recipient of many honors, among them the 1967 Davy Medal of the Royal Society and the 1969 Roger Adams Award of the ACS, in a long career.

Prelog wanted to find a way to give specific meanings to the shape of different stereomodels. In 1953, along with Derek Barton, Odd Hassel, and Kenneth Pitzer, he proposed the axial/equatorial terminology to describe the spatial arrangement of cyclohexane bonds Also, in 1960 along with Willaim Klyne, he proposed the syn/anti clinal/periplanar terminology to describe steric relations across single bonds However, his most important contribution to organic chemistry was the Cahn-Ingold-Prelog (CIP) scheme. Prelog, Ingold, and Cahn teamed up together in 1954 to create a terminology system in which one could adequately specify the configuration of stereoisomers. The CIP stereochemical rules have been applied in standard organic chemistry textbooks ever since In 1975, Prelog received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his research into the stereochemistry of organic molecules and their reactions

I was born on July 23rd, 1906 in Sarajevo in the province of Bosnia, which then belonged to the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy and later, in 1918, became part of Yugoslavia. In the western world my birthplace has a somewhat sinister reputation that was characterized by an older tax-inspector in the Midwest of America as "the place where all that mess started". Actually, as an 8 years old boy I stood near to the spot where Archiduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated. At the beginning of the first World War, in 1915, we moved to Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, where I attended the gymnasium. The period 1924 to 1929 was spent studying Chemistry at the Czech Institute of Technology in Prague, Czechoslovakia. The supervisor of my thesis was Professor Emil Votocek, one of the prominent founders of chemical research in Czechoslovakia. My mentor, however, was Rudolf Lukes, then lecturer and later successor of Votocek to the chair of organic chemistry. To Lukes I owe the greatest part of my early scientific education, and he remained my close friend until his premature death in 1960. In addition to these two "real" teachers I admired Robert Robinson , Christopher Ingold and Leopold Ruzicka , all of whom I considered as my "imaginary" teachers. In later years I was fortunate to become well acquainted with all three of these great chemists.

    Prelog, Vladimir
Nobel Prize for Chemistry with John W. Cornforth for his work on the stereochemistry of organic molecules and reactions. (Stereochemistry is the study of the three-dimensional arrangements of atoms within molecules.) Prelog performed wide-ranging research on the stereochemistry of alkaloids, antibiotics, enzymes, and other natural compounds. In particular he contributed to the understanding of stereoisomerism, in which two compounds of identical chemical composition have different, mirror-image configurations (like a person's right and left hands). With Robert Cahn and Sir Christopher Ingold, he developed a nomenclature for describing complex organic compounds. This system, known as CIP, provided a standard and international language for precisely specifying a compound's structure.
