Ignaz L. Lieben Award 1.History:
In 1862 Ignaz L. Lieben instituted the award bearing his name. He intended it to be awarded in perpetuity by the Imperial Academy of Science, the predecessor of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (AAS). It was, however, terminated by the National Socialists in 1938. The Ignaz L. Lieben Award has now been re-established by Drs. Isabel and Alfred Bader. 2. Requirements and qualifications:
Eligible candidates for the Ignaz L. Lieben Award are scientists working on a permanent base in Austria, Bosnia-Herzegowina, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia or Slovenia, not older than 36 (for applicants who interrupted their scientific work for reasons of childcare this limit is raised by four years) who have completed their doctorate and have made outstanding achievements in scientific research. AAS and the Academies of Sciences of the countries listed above may propose candidates, and scientists may apply themselves, but no full member of any academy is eligible. 3. Fields of research:

Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Fritz Pregl The Nobel Prize In Chemistry 1923 Fritz Pregl was born in Laibach on September 3, 1869, and attended the local "Gymnasium", from where he proceeded to the University of Graz to study medicine. He received his M. D. in 1894. In 1904 he went to Germany, where he studied for short periods under Gustav v. Hufner in Tubingen, W. Ostwald in Leipzig and Emil Fischer in Berlin. On his return to Graz in 1905 Pregl worked at the Medico-Chemical Institute under K. B. Hoffman and was appointed forensic chemist for the Graz circuit in 1907. At that time he started investigating the components of albuminous bodies and the analysis of bile acids. Initially Pregl's scientific work had been mainly in the fields of physiology and physiological chemistry; later he turned to the study of the constitution of chemical compounds, in particular the investigation of bile acids. By 1912 he was able, by using his own methods of quantitative micro-analysis, to make measurements of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulphur, and halogen, using only 5-13 mg of starting materials with results as accurate as those obtained by macro-analysis. Pregl never married, and
