    4. George Porter - Biography
george porter – Biography. george porter was born in the West Ridingof Yorkshire on the 6th December 1920. lord porter died in 2002.
    http://www.nobel.se/chemistry/laureates/1967/porter-bio.html
George Porter was born in the West Riding of Yorkshire on the 6th December 1920. He married Stella Jean Brooke on the 25th August 1949 and they have two sons, John and Andrew.
His first education was at local primary and grammar schools and in 1938 he went, as Ackroyd Scholar, to Leeds University . His interest in physical chemistry and chemical kinetics grew during his final year there and was inspired to a large extent by the teaching of M.G. Evans. During his final honours year he took a special course in radio physics and became, later in the year, an Officer in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve Special Branch, concerned with radar. The training which he received in electronics and pulse techniques was to prove useful later in suggesting new approaches to chemical problems.
Early in 1945, he went to Cambridge to work as a postgraduate research student with Professor R.G.W. Norrish. His first problem involved the study, by flow techniques, of free radicals produced in gaseous photochemical reactions. The idea of using short pulses of light, of shorter duration than the lifetime of the free radicals, occurred to him about a year later. He began the construction of an apparatus for this purpose in the early summer of 1947 and, together with Norrish, applied this to the study of gaseous free radicals and to combustion. Their collaboration continued until 1954 when Porter left Cambridge.
During 1949 there was an exciting period when the method was applied to a wide variety of gaseous substances. Porter still remembers the first appearance of the absorption spectra of new, transient substances in time resolved sequence, as they gradually appeared under the safelight of a dark room, as one of the most rewarding experiences of his life.

A war surplus searchlight was the unlikely piece of equipment which a young English chemist, George Porter, pressed into the service of science during the late 1940s. As a Cambridge researcher following five years in the Royal Navy, he was investigating chemical reactions thought until that time to be instantaneous in nature and, thus, unmeasurable in the laboratory. Porter's ingenuity paid off Barely 20 years later, he shared the 1967 Nobel Prize in chemistry (with Manfred Eigen and Ronald Norrish) for studies on what became known merely as "very fast" reactions. After serving for two decades as Director and Fullerian Professor of Chemistry at the Royal Institution of Great Britain, Sir George Porter presides today over the Royal Society of London. Unlike the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, which has statutory duties as an arm of government, and in contrast to the academies of Eastern Europe, which are directly involved in the financing of science, the Royal Society is an entirely private, independent body. Traditionally close to government as a source of informed but informal advice, the Society has found itself drawn increasingly into public debate about the funding of research. It was this aspect of the Society's role with which Bernard Dixon, European editor of The Scientist

    Lord Porter: Natural communicator
George Porter, Lord Porter of Luddenham, had been a professor of chemistry for 35 years and was president of the Royal Society from 1985 to 1990. He was joint winner of the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1967 for his work on photochemistry - chemical reactions triggered by light - and flash photolysis - photographing the behaviour of molecules during chemical reactions. In later life, George Porter had regularly stressed the need for better teaching of science, and accused successive governments of deliberately downgrading scientific research. He once said that Britain seemed well prepared to join the Third World of science. George Porter was a natural communicator and a pioneer of scientific programmes on television. He was knighted in 1972, made a member of the exclusive Order of Merit in December 1989 and a life peer in June 1990. Leeds University: Lord Porter's alma mater
George Porter was born in December 1920 at Stainforth in Yorkshire, where his father was a Methodist lay preacher, and after grammar school, went to Leeds University.

George Harrison 'Knows He Will Die Soon' From Cancer
LONDON (Reuters) - Ex-Beatle George Harrison has admitted that he expects to die soon from cancer, the group's former producer was quoted on Sunday as saying. The 58-year-old musician has been treated for a brain tumor at a clinic in Switzerland, having already undergone an operation for lung cancer earlier this year. The Mail on Sunday said Harrison had told his friend and former producer George Martin, dubbed the "fifth Beatle," that he does not have long to live. Martin told the newspaper: "He is taking it easy and hoping that the thing will go away. He has an indomitable spirit but he knows that he is going to die soon and he is accepting that." Spokesmen for Harrison and Martin could not be immediately reached for comment. Martin added: "George is very philosophical. He does realize that everybody has got to die some time. "He has been near death many times and he's been rescued many times as well. But he knows he is going to die soon and he's accepting it perfectly happily."

Church Family Online Magazine Our Community ... Sermon Summaries (George is Thornleigh's Church Pastor) Title "We Serve The Lord" Theme Our Ministry with God Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:58 Introduction
My last sermon was "Bring on the New Year Plans." The New Year is "Predictable". It will be hard and we need to be focused. Total "Reliability" will be found only in the God family - Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The are our only source of total 100% reliability for 2004. We need, "Experience" and fellowship with God the Father, God the son and God the Holy Spirit. We need to, "be determined and go for victory." What we offer society in 2004 we need to, "deliver effectively and with energy." Seek and serve the Lord more in 2004. The last sermon for 2003 was about the Purpose and meaning of life. Our purpose should be to seek and love the Lord with all our hearts minds and souls. We also noted that we ought to seek and focus, "on things above", not only on earthly things. This love for goodness and God is to flow over into our relationships with our neighbours, workmates and acquaintances. The purpose of loving others as we love ourselves. It is sharing Jesus and salvation with others. This leads into my message from God for you today. We need to have a passion of service for others.

    PRELIMINARY THOUGHTS
before the washing of feet as outlined in John 13 In Romans 12:1 Pastor Paul admonishes us to "… present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service." Sacrifices of the Old Testament period pointed to the "Lamb of God", who would die to take a way the sins of the entire world. Here Pastor Paul uses the symbol of sacrifice to encourage Christians everywhere to present their bodies to God as a "living sacrifice". This is a reasonable request of God and a reasonable reaction from His children. When done through the power of the Holy Spirit and in the name of Jesus Christ and faith in Him, our sacrifice is holy and acceptable to the Godhead. The washing of each others feet is in fact an act of faith by which we act out a ceremonial cleansing from sin. As water cleanses so Christ's sacrifice cleanses us and by faith we are Holy and acceptable in God's sight. Christ makes us fit persons to meet with the Godhead at the table commemorating Christ's sacrifice on our behalf. Our reasonable service is to obey His instructions in

He made contributions to other techniques, particularly that of radical trapping and matrix stabilisation.
