Carnegie Mellon University's John Pople Is Winner Of 1992 Wolf Prize In Chemistry
By Barbara Spector Date: March 30, 1992
John Anthony Pople, the John Christian Warner University Professor of Natural Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University and an adjunct professor of chemistry at Northwestern University, has been selected to receive Israel's 1992 Wolf Prize in chemistry. The $100,000 prize will be presented to Pople in a May ceremony by the president of Israel. Pople, 66, was recognized for his contributions to theoretical chemistry, particularly his development of widely used quantum-chemical methods. In the mid-1960s, he and colleagues published a series of papers on the approximate self-consistent molecular orbital theory, based on quantum mechanics, which is used to calculate charge distributions and electronic dipole moments in organic molecules (Journal of Chemical Physics, 43:S129, 1965; 43:S136, 1965; 44:3289, 1966; 47:2026, 1967; 49:4643, 1968). The Wolf Foundation citation states that "his work has provided valuable theoretical tools for interpreting molecular spectra and inferring chemical functionality of large molecules. His easily applicable methods, supplied today in neat computer packages, help scientists obtain deep insight into the structure and activities of otherwise bewildering complexity." Ironically, Pople does not have a degree in chemistry; he received his Dr.Ph. in 1951 in mathematics from Cambridge University in his native England. He got into chemistry, he recalls, as "a mathematics student in Cambridge, when I was looking around for a research topic on which to write a thesis." He decided upon the structure of liquid water, a subject on which, "at that time, not a lot was known."

John Pople
John Anthony Pople (born October 31 ) is a theoretical chemist . Born in England , he came to the United States of America in the 1950s, where he has resided since then, though retaining British citizenship. He received his B. A. (in 19) and doctorate (in ) degrees in mathematics , from Cambridge University in the United Kingdom . His thesis was, however, on a topic that would generally be considered chemistry : the bonding structures of water . Pople to this day considers himself more of a mathematician than a chemist, but theoretical chemists consider him one of the most important of their number. His first major contribution was a theory of approximate molecular orbital (MO) calculations on pi electron systems in , identical to the one developed by Rudolph Pariser and Robert G. Parr

Farewell to John Pople
Leo Radom
I am sorry to be passing on the news that John Pople passed away on Monday, March 15 after a brief illness. Professor Pople was the father of modern computational quantum chemistry and received the 1998 Nobel Prize in Chemistry (together with Walter Kohn) for his seminal contributions in this area (see Poster outside Room 309 for more details). He was the person most responsible for converting computational quantum chemistry from a tool used only by specialist theoreticians to the widespread research instrument that it is today. He received a knighthood to become Sir John Pople in 2003.
Professor Pople had strong links with Australia in general and RSC in particular, making close to 10 academic visits to the School in the 1980s and 1990s. He was one of the very early Birch Lecturers. Several of his most prominent students/postdocs were antipodeans, including David Buckingham, Peter Gill and Martin Head-Gordon. I had the good fortune to spend more than 3 years as a postdoc with him in the early 1970s. In recognition of his international status and Australian links, Professor Pople was appointed a Corresponding Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 1993.

Sir John A. Pople, 78, Who Won Nobel Chemistry Prize, Dies
By KENNETH CHANG
ir John A. Pople, a mathematician who became a chemist and won a Nobel Prize in 1998 for a computer tool that describes the dance of molecules in chemical reactions, died Monday at his daughter's home in Chicago. He was 78. The cause of death was liver cancer, his family said. Dr. Pople was among the first to realize the potential of computers in chemistry. The behavior of all molecules is defined by the Schrödinger equation, the fundamental formula of quantum mechanics. But the equation is impossible to solve exactly except in the simplest cases. In the 1960's, Dr. Pople developed methods for calculating approximate solutions, determining the orbits of electrons zipping around molecules. From the electron orbits, the computer program predicts properties of the molecules, including whether they are stable, which colors of light they will absorb or emit, and the pace of chemical reactions. The work culminated in a program, Gaussian-70, published in 1970. That program and succeeding versions have become a common tool for chemists.

Nobel Prize Winning Chemists John A. Pople The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1998 John A. Pople was born on October 31, 1925 in Burnham-on-Sea, England. He lived there with his parents until shortly after the end of the Second World War in 1946. His father, Keith Pople, owned the principal men's clothing store in Burnham. His mother, Mary Jones, came from a farming background. He returned to Cambridge to begin a career in mathematical science. He developed an interest in the theory of liquids, particularly as the statistical mechanics of this phase had received relatively little attention, compared with solids and gases. Thus, after the examinations in June 1948, he began his career in theoretical chemistry at the beginning of July. In 1948, he sought out a professional teacher. The young lady he contacted, Joy Bowers, subsequently became his wife. They were married in 1952. In the theoretical chemistry department, LJ was professor and Frank Boys started as lecturer in September 1948. He began research with some studies of the water molecule, examining the nature of the lone pairs of electrons. This was an initial step towards a theory of hydrogen bonding between water molecules and a preliminary, rather empirical study of the structure of liquid water. This fulfilled his initial objective of dealing with properties of liquids and gained him a Ph. D. and a research fellowship at Trinity College.

Press Release: The 1998 Nobel Prize in Chemistry
KUNGL. VETENSKAPSAKADEMIEN
THE ROYAL SWEDISH ACADEMY OF SCIENCES
13 October 1998
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to
Professor Walter Kohn, University of California at Santa Barbara, USA and,
Professor John A. Pople, Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, USA (British citizen).
The Laureates have each made pioneering contributions in developing methods that can be used for theoretical studies of the properties of molecules and the chemical processes in which they are involved.
Citation: "to Walter Kohn for his development of the density-functional theory and to John Pople for his development of computational methods in quantum chemistry."
His early life was spent in Burnham-on-Sea, he was born on October 31, 1925 and lived here with his parents until shortly after the end of the Second World War in 1946. He was the first of his family to attend University.
His father, Keith Pople, owned the men's clothing store in Burnham. In addition to selling clothes in the shop, he used to drive around the surrounding countryside with a car full of clothes for people in remote farms and villages. He was resourceful and made a fair income, considering the economic difficulties during the depression of the 1930s. John Poples great-grandfather had come to Burnham around 1850 and set up a number of local businesses. He had a large family and these were split up among his children. As a result, he had relatives in many of the other businesses in the town. His grandfather inherited the clothing shop and this passed to his father when he returned from the army at end of the First World War.

Warner University Professor Natural Science at Carnegie Mellon University and 1998 Nobel Laureate, died March 15 in Chicago. Pople, affiliated with the Mellon Institute for more than 30 years, helped to create the field of computational quantum chemistry, making possible the detailed analysis of matter. Specifically, he received the Nobel for using fundamental laws of quantum mechanics to develop "computational methods making possible the theoretical study of molecules, their properties and how they act together in chemical reactions." "We are deeply saddened to learn of John's passing. As a pioneer of his field, he transformed our ability to conduct research and inspired generations of scientists to build upon his legacy," said Richard D. McCullough, dean of the Mellon College of Science.
