From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Sir John Anthony Pople October 31 March 15 ) was a theoretical chemist . Born in England , he attended Bristol Grammar School , where an IT room and a scholarship are named after him. He came to the United States of America in the 1950s, where he lived the rest of his life, though he retained British citizenship. He received his B. A. (in 1946) and doctorate (in degrees in mathematics , from Cambridge University in the United Kingdom . His thesis was, however, on a topic that would generally be considered chemistry : the bonding structures of water . Pople considered himself more of a mathematician than a chemist, but theoretical chemists consider him one of the most important of their number. His first major contribution was a theory of approximate molecular orbital (MO) calculations on pi electron systems in , identical to the one developed by Rudolph Pariser and Robert G. Parr in the same year, and now called the Pariser-Parr-Pople http://www.quantum-chemistry-history.com/Popl_Dat/Pople2.htm (PPP) method. Subsequently, he developed the methods of

The recent Consistory for the creation of 44 new Cardinals, a few weeks after the conclusion of the Holy Year, will surely be recorded in the Church's annals. I would like to reflect once again on this event and its significance, which concerns not only the new Cardinals and the Ecclesial Communities from which they come, but the entire family of God and its mission in the world today. The Christian people have been filled in a way with a breath of renewed hope. During the Jubilee and in these recent days we have heard the powerful invitation to set our gaze on the future. The Church looks ahead and wants "to put out into the deep", enlivened by the spiritual energy inspired within her by the Jubilee experience. This energy can only strengthen and enrich the elements that belong, so to speak, to the Ecclesial Community's genetic code:

Parliament should sent a message of felicitation to Pope John Paul II on his 25 th anniversary as pontiff to pay tribute to his work for world peace and inter-faith bridge-building as well as to highlight Malaysia’s resolve to foster global inter-civilisational and inter-religious understanding and goodwill
Media Statement
by Lim Kit Siang Penang Friday
Parliament on Monday should adopt a motion to send a message of felicitation to Pope John Paul II on his 25 th anniversary as pontiff for two reasons:
  • to pay tribute to the 83-year-old Pope’s work for world peace and inter-faith bridge-building in the past quarter of a century; and to highlight Malaysia’s inter-religious character and resolve to play a greater role in promoting inter-civilisational and inter-religious understanding and goodwill in the international arena in the 21 st century.
Twenty-five years ago, when a relatively unknown Polish archbishop Cardinal Karol Wojtyla became pope, Jimmy Carter was president of the United States, the Soviet Union was a superpower and Hussein Onn was the Prime Minister in Malaysia. The world is now a very different place and Pope John Paul II has had a hand in shaping events to a degree unrivalled by any other religious figure in modern history – whether in helping to bring down communism in eastern Europe or working tirelessly for peace in the world, most recently in Iraq.

Auto-biography Dear Friends, I have been convinced for many years that the greatest treasure of doing science, humanly speaking, is the deep friendships that are built over the years. Thus it is with sadness that I must tell those of you who have not yet heard that our mutual friend John Pople died yesterday. John was a recipient of the WATOC Schroedinger Medal, a WATOC Fellow, and a member of the WATOC Board from its inception. John was a private person. On February 15 Hilary Pople, John's daughter, wrote to a group of twelve including Paul Schleyer, Leo Radom and me. Hilary and later George Schatz related that John underwent colon surgery the week before, and the surgeons discovered a massive spread of the disease to the liver. Hilary indicated that the family was gathering, but that John was too weak for other visitors or telephone calls. Today Hilary wrote to say that yesterday (March 15) John died peacefully, surrounded by his family. The memorial service for John will be held Monday, March 29 at 11:30 AM at the First United Methodist Church, 516 Church Street, Evanston. Evanston is just north of Chicago. All WATOC Members and friends are welcome. Through the good offices of Leo Radom, I came to know John and Joy Pople quite well. While on leave at the Australian National University, the Poples and the Schaefers lived a few hundred yards away during four or five beautiful Southern Hemisphere summers. My children loved to visit Mrs. Pople. John and I would have lunch together every day with Leo, supplemented by many hours of discussions on science and other topics. John was a quiet man, but a wonderful friend for those who were fortunate enough to get to know him well. I believe that John felt his time had come. He never really recovered from the loss of his beloved wife Joy two years ago. He had accomplished what he wanted and was at peace with God. We will miss him greatly. Very truly yours, Fritz Schaefer Auto-biography
