Max Planck
The German physicist Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck, b. Apr. 23, 1858, d. Oct. 3, 1947, developed the concept of the quantum, or fundamental increment of energybasic to quantum mechanics, and a cornerstone of modern physics. After receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Munich in 1879, Planck taught at the University of Kiel (1885-89) and the University of Berlin (1889-1926). His appointment at the latter institution included the directorship of the Institute of Theoretical Physics that was newly founded for him. Planck began studying blackbody radiation in 1897 and discovered that at long wavelengths it did not obey the distribution laws given by Wilhelm Wien. This discovery led him to announce (1900) his revolutionary idea that an oscillator could emit energy only in discrete quanta, contrary to classical physical theory. The quantum theorywhich gained Planck the Nobel Prize for physics in 1918was used by Albert Einstein to explain (1905) the photoelectric effect and by Niels Bohr to propose (1913) a model of the atom with quantized electronic states; the theory was later developed into quantum mechanics. Planck mastered every aspect of physics from thermodynamics and electrodynamics to relativity and also wrote extensively on the philosophy of science.

MAX PLANCK
Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck was born in Kiel, Germany, on April 23, 1858, the son of Julius Wilhelm and Emma ( née Patzig) Planck. His father was Professor of Constitutional Law in the University of Kiel , and later in Göttingen Planck studied at the Universities of Munich and Berlin, where his teachers included Kirchhoff and Helmholtz, and received his doctorate of philosophy at Munich in 1879. He was Privatdozent in Munich from 1880 to 1885, then Associate Professor of Theoretical Physics at Kiel until 1889, in which year he succeeded Kirchhoff as Professor at Berlin University, where he remained until his retirement in 1926. Afterwards he became President of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society for the Promotion of Science, a post he held until 1937. The Prussian Academy of Sciences appointed him a member in 1894 and Permanent Secretary in 1912. Planck's earliest work was on the subject of thermodynamics, an interest he acquired from his studies under Kirchhoff, whom he greatly admired, and very considerably from reading R. Clausius' publications. He published papers on entropy, on thermoelectric ity and on the theory of dilute solutions.

PLANCK
Assim, a energia (E) é igual a hv.

Max Planck
Max Planck made many contributions to theoretical physics and attained his fame via his role as originator of the quantum theory. This theory revolutionized our understanding of atomic and subatomic processes, it is one of the fundamental theories of 20th-century physics, and has led to industrial and military applications that affect every aspect of modern life.
Early life
Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck was born on April 23, 1858, in Kiel, Germany. When he was nine years old, he entered Munich's renowned Maximilian Gymnasium, where his interest in physics and mathematics developed. Although Planck excelled in all subjects, after graduation at age 17 he ultimately chose physics over classical philology or music because he had concluded that physics was where his greatest originality lay. Music remained part of his life as he was an excellent pianist who found great joy in playing his favorite works of Schubert and Brahms. He was also an outdoors man who loved taking long walks each day, hiking and mountain climbing even into his twilight years. Planck entered the University of Munich in the fall of 1874 and transferred to the University of Berlin in 1877 where his intellectual capacities were brought to a focus as the result of his independent study of Rudolf Clausius' writings on thermodynamics. He then returned to Munich and received his doctoral degree in July 1879 at the tender age of 21. He completed his qualifying dissertation in 1880 and became a lecturer. In 1885, he was appointed associate professor at the University of Kiel. In 1889, Planck received an appointment to the University of Berlin where he was promoted to full professor in 1892. His Berlin lectures on all branches of theoretical physics were held in high regard within the scientific community for many years and he remained in Berlin for the rest of his active life.

He started to study physics at the University of Munich in the fall of 1874, and received his doctoral degree in July 1878 at the unusually young age of 21. The following year he completed his Habilitationsschrift (qualifying dissertation) at Munich and became a Privatdozent (lecturer). In 1885 he was appointed ausserordentlicher Professor (associate professor) at the University of Kiel. In 1889, Planck received an appointment to the University of Berlin, where he came to venerate Helmholtz as mentor and colleague. In 1892 he was promoted to ordentlicher Professor (full professor). Max Planck made many contributions to theoretical physics, but his fame rests primarily on his role as originator of the quantum theory. Planck was 42 years old in 1900 when he made the famous discovery that in 1918 won him the Nobel Prize for Physics: The quantum of action, now known as Planck's constant h , relates the energy of radiation to its frequency. He also evaluated the Boltzmann constant, Avogadro's number, and the charge of the electron. Planck became permanent secretary of the mathematics and physics sections of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in 1912 and held that position until 1938; he was also president of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society (now the Max Planck Society) from 1930 to 1937. In 1909, his first wife Marie Merck died, leaving Planck with two sons and twin daughters. The elder son, Karl, was killed in action in 1916. The following year, Margarete, one of his daughters, died in childbirth, and in 1919 the same fate befell Emma, his other daughter. The younger son, Erwin, was implicated in the attempt made on Hitler's life on July 20, 1944, and in early 1945 he was killed by the Gestapo. At war's end, Planck and his second wife, Marga von Hoesslin, moved to Göttingen. There, on October 4, 1947, in his 89th year, he died.

Planck began studying black body radiation in 1897 and discovered that at very short wavelengths it did not obey the distribution laws given by Wilhelm Wien . In trying to understand this spectrum using Wien’s laws, Planek ran smack into an "ultraviolet catastrophe". A black body would give off an infinite amount of energy at the ultraviolet end of the spectrum. That was impossible. After working on this problem unsuccessfully for several years. he took a fateful step in late 1900 that he eventually called "an act of desperation." Planck cautiously proposed that, contrary to classical wave theory, matter emits and absorbs radiation in tiny discrete packets or bundles called "quanta" — not continuously, as everyone had assumed. Initially Planck was not comfortable with this explanation and fully expected the idea to be disproved by further research. Instead quantum theory, which gained Planck the Nobel Prize for physics in 1918, was used by
