Phillips, William D. I was born on 5 November 1948 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, just across the river from the town of Kingston, where my parents lived with my one and a half year old sister, Maxine. My parents had come to this small Pennsylvania town from places and backgrounds that were far apart and yet quite similar.
My mother, Mary Catherine Savino (later, Savine), was born in the southern Italian village of Ripacandida in 1913. Among her earliest memories are riding into her grandfather's vineyards in a horse-drawn cart. Her father emigrated to the US and brought the family to Altoona, Pennsylvania in 1920. Her new Arnerican schoolmates teased her for her inability to speak English and taunted her as a "Wop" for her Italian heritage. She resolved to excel, and so she did, graduating near the top of her class from Altoona High School.
My father, William (Bill) Cornelius Phillips, was born in Juniata, a community on the edge of Altoona, in 1907. His father was a carpenter and his mother operated a boarding house to augment the family income. His grandfather was a barrel-maker, who would demonstrate the quality of his product by jumping onto the finished barrel in front of the customer. Dad could trace his heritage to ancestors from Wales who fought in the American Revolution. My father and mother were each the first in their families to go to college, each attending Juniata College, a small school in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, founded and strongly influenced by the pacifist Church of the Brethren.

NIST FELLOW WILLIAM D. PHILLIPS
ELECTED TO NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCE
William D. Phillips, a leading researcher in laser cooling of atoms at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, was elected to the National Academy of Sciences on April 29. Election to the NAS is considered one of the highest possible honors for a U.S. scientist or engineer. Phillips, a resident of Gaithersburg and a NIST Fellow since 1996, is internationally known for advancing basic knowledge and new techniques to chill atoms to extremely low temperatures. The cooling and trapping of atoms, a discipline that emerged in the mid-1970s with the advent of laboratory lasers, has allowed scientists to observe and measure quantum phenomena in atoms that seem to defy the physical principles governing our tangible room-temperature realm. After earning his Ph.D. in physics and completing post-doctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Phillips came to NIST (then the National Bureau of Standards) in 1978 to work in the Electricity Division. While at MIT, Phillips had completed two thesis experiments, one in the well-established area of magnetic resonance and the other with newly available tunable laboratory lasers. His official duties at NBS originally were related to his first thesis experiment, involving precision electrical measurements. However, he explains, he was allowed to use "stolen moments to dabble in laser-cooling" with lab equipment he brought from MIT. With encouragement from NBS management, he continued experiments and demonstrated that a beam of neutral atoms could be slowed and cooled with radiation pressure from a laser.

Cambridge University Press ISBN: 052144652X When Columbus was born in the mid-fifteenth century, Europe was isolated in many ways from the rest of the Old World and Europeans did not even know that the world of the Western Hemisphereexisted. The voyages of Christopher Columbus opened a period of European exploration and empire building that breached the boundaries of those isolated worlds and changed the course of human history. This book describes the life and times of Christopher Columbus. The story is not just of one man's rise and fall. Seen in its broader context, his life becomes a prism reflecting the broad range of human experience for the past five hundred years. This publication sets out to scotch the sorts of myths that surround the story of Columbus by making reference to primary sources of information concerning Columbus's voyage and his life, and by using these, to set his life in the context of the Europe of his day. Howell Living History Farm
101 Hunter Rd.
Titusville, NJ 08560
This sprawling farmland has been worked for more than 250 years, since 1732 when Joseph Phillips purchased 125 acres from landholder, William Bryant. The Mercer County Park Commission restored the farm to its 1900-1910 appearance, and since 1984 it has been a wonderful resource for families and groups to experience turn-of-the-century farming. A Self-Guided Tour takes about an hour and a half, inspecting some thirty unique features. Begin in the Parking/Picnic area, where the day's farming activities are posted. Then venture past the Snake Fence into the 1900 farm. See the Beehives with their mouseguards and pass the Round Pasture to the North Crop Fields. Horses, sheep, groundhogs, geese and ducks will be seen in the pasture, and one-third of the fields are cropped and cultivated in 1900's fashion. Continue to the Sheep Barn, Chicken House, Main Barn, Hog Pasture, Apple Orchard, Farmhouse, Ice House, and other areas to get all the sights, sounds and smells of farming the old way. It's fun and educational, and perfect for people of all ages. Howell Farm offers a full calendar of events for families. Just a few of the possible activities include Maple Sugaring, Workhorse Rides, Crafts Workshops, Wagon Tours, Hayrides, Sheep Shearing, Cornhusking, and even Plowing Matches. Much more goes on here, and a calendar is free for the asking. For those who live nearby, The Farmlife Program offers a great opportunity to introduce children to the farming life.

"RED" PHILLIPS
my Grandpa when he was a football and track star at Tulsa University in the 1930's Clarence Henry or "Red" as he is known, went to Bristow High School . He was on the track team and played football there. The Bristow High School football team went to State in the 1920's. They beat Sapula 7 to 6. Red made the touchdown and the extra kick that won the game. He received letters from Notre Dame and Penn State offering him scholarships. He declined and went to Tulsa University where he was a football and track star. Red, "alone" qualified to go to Oklahoma City for state track to represent Bristow. He won the 100, 220, 440 and placed high in the high and low hurdles and pole vault. Red then went to the Drake Relays and to the National's in Chicago, where he met Jesse Owens . In the first race Red beat Jesse Owens. In the next, he hit a hurdle and fell down, but still got 3rd place. Jesse Owens borrowed Red's shoes for the race in which he won. My Grandpa, Red, kept those shoes and gave one to each of his son's.
