American chemist who, along with Jean-Marie Lehn and Donald J. Cram, was awarded the 1987 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for their development and use of molecules with structure-specific interactions of high selectivity. Charles J. Pedersen was born in Pusan, Korea, on October 3, 1904. His father Brede Pedersen, was a Norwegian marine engineer who left home as a young man and shipped out as ann engineer on a steam freighter to the Far East. His mother, Takino Yasui , was born in 1874 in Japan. He had a sister, Astrid, five years his senior, and an elder brother who died in childhood prior to his birth.
After taking a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering at the University of Dayton, he went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he obtained a master's degree in organic chemistry. As a new scientist he was initially set to work on a series of typical problems, which he solved successfully. After a while, he began to search for oil-solvable precipitants for copper, and he found the first good metal deactivator for petroleum products. As a result of his work, he developed a great interest in the effects of various ligands on the catalytic properties of copper and the transition elements generally and worked in the field for several years.
He next expanded his interests in the oxidative degradation of the substrates he was working on, namely petroleum products and rubber. During the late '40s and '50s his scientific interests became more varied. He became interested in the photochemistry of some new phthalocyanine adducts and of quinoneimine dioxides. He developed polymerization initiators and even made some novel polymers. In 1960 he returned to investigations in coordination chemistry, and decided to study the effects of bi- and multidentate phenolic ligands on the catalytic properties of the vanadyl group, VO.

Donald James Cram
Donald James Cram
American chemist who, along with Charles J. Pedersen and Jean-Marie Lehn, was awarded the 1987 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his creation of molecules that mimic the chemical behaviour of molecules found in living systems.
Cram was educated at Rollins College, Fla., and at the University of Nebraska, and he received his doctorate in organic chemistry from Harvard University in 1947. He joined the faculty of the University of California at Los Angeles in 1947 and became a full professor there in 1956. Cram amplified and expanded upon Pedersen's ground-breaking synthesis of the crown ethersbasically two-dimensional organic compounds that are able to recognize and selectively combine with the ions of certain metal elements. Cram synthesized molecules that took this chemistry into three dimensions, creating an array of differently shaped molecules that could interact selectively with other chemicals because of their complementary three-dimensional structures. His work represented a large step toward the synthesis of functional laboratory-made mimics of enzymes and other natural molecules whose special chemical behaviour is due to their characteristic structure.

Pedersen disliked writing scientific papers. So when the chemist at DuPont Experimental Station reported his discovery of cyclic polyethers and their complexes with metal salts, he wrote just one paper [ J. Am. Chem. Soc ], whereas many other chemists would have reported the work in several papers. His colleagues referred to it as "the blockbuster." EXCITEMENT Discovery of crown ethers filled Pedersen with wonder. DUPONT PHOTO The 20-page paper describes the synthesis, identification, structures, and properties of 33 cyclic polyethers. He prepared the compounds from aromatic vicinal diols such as catechol using five different methods of preparation and showed that some of the compounds form stable complexes with Li , Na , and other cations.

My first motor vehicle was a Honda 160 Dream, way back when I was a grad student. I'd always wanted a BMW but that was just a real "dream". I brought back a Honda 350CB from Japan and rode it all around the US and Canada. Finally, after eight years, a car pulled out in front of me I couldn't ride around and I quit for many years. Got a responsible job, had a family, settled down. I'm over all that now. Now I like boxers/airheads . I rode a BMW R65 in Germany several years ago and then I moved to "the bay area" in '93. I discovered Cal BMW and the roads here, and the very best motorcycle in the world for me: an . It was my only motor vehicle from Jan 1994 to Jan 2001, combining commuting and a hobby. I joined BMW Northern California (NorCal) and they taught me a lot about riding the backroads and motorcycle camping. I now keep a drysack packed with my camping gear and can be off in 15 minutes. And I have never stopped at a Road Closed sign, though I have had to turn back. I also keep a bike in Europe and ride there in the summers. See the Eurotour entries below.
