The Ukrainian Scholarship Campaign
Pearson College is one of nine United World Colleges. It was founded as the national memorial to Lester Bowles Pearson, Canada's late Prime Minister and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. The aim of the college is to demonstrate that education can be a force to unite rather than divide nations. The college promotes international understanding by creating an environment in which students from many countries are brought together in study, in recreation and in service to the community. Mr. Pearson had this to say: "Students will be welcomed without regard to race, religion or politics and we intend to establish scholarships so that the students who attend the College will be from all levels of society and will be genuine representatives of their own peoples. This system could become a revolutionary force in international education."
The Ukrainian Scholarship Campaign
The goal of The Ukrainian Scholarship Campaign is to award scholarships to eligible students from Ukraine to attend the Lester B Pearson College of the Pacific. The yearly tuition is $ 17,500. The Ukrainian Scholarship Campaign hopes to fund two students from Ukraine each year. This fund is managed by Lester B Pearson College of the Pacific and tax receipts are available to people or organizations who make a donation to the fund. If you wish to make a donation to the Ukrainian Scholarship fund, print out the form below, fill it out and send it the address indicated.

Lester Pearson dies in Ottawa
The Globe and Mail Thursday, December 28, 1972 - later dispatch Lester B. Pearson Ottawa (CP) - Lester Bowles Pearson, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1957 and Prime Minister of Canada from 1963 to 1968, died in his Ottawa home last night. He was 75. The diplomat-politician, scholar and writer, succumbed to a spreading cancer that had caused the loss of his right eye two years ago. The easy-mannered leader known to friends as Mike since his athletic and studious boyhood, had lapsed into a coma yesterday and died at 11.40 p.m. His career was highlighted by the award of the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in helping to organize a United Nations peacekeeping force in the Middle East in 1956. That brittle peace lasted for about a decade, collapsing with renewed Arab-Israeli war in 1967 on the eve of Mr. Pearson's retirement from active politics. His years as Prime Minister, despite a lack of majority in the Commons, were marked by a succession of welfare measures such as national medical care insurance: recognition of Quebec's special place in Confederation; trial abolition of capital punishment, and - amid controversy- adoption of the Canadian flag instead of the old Red Ensign bearing the union Jack.

Lester Pearson, 1963 Canadian Press in full LESTER BOWLES PEARSON (b. April 23, 1897, Toronto, Ont., Can.d. Dec. 27, 1972, Ottawa), politician, diplomat, and prime minister of Canada (1963-68), who was prominent as a mediator in international disputes. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1957. Pearson served in World War I (1914-18) and lectured in history at the University of Toronto (1924-28), after studying there and at the University of Oxford. He joined the Canadian foreign service in 1928 and became first secretary in the Department of External Affairs. He served on two royal commissions (1931) and as counselor of the Canadian high commissioner's office in London (1935). Recalled to Canada in 1941, Pearson then served as ambassador to the United States in 1945-46. He headed the Canadian delegation at the United Nations from 1948 to 1956, and he was president of the United Nations General Assembly in 1952-53. In 1948 he became secretary of state for external affairs in the Liberal government of Louis Saint Laurent and entered Parliament for Algoma East. He represented Canada at the founding of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in 1949, and in 1951 he was chairman of that organization. In 1957 he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to solve the Suez crisis of 1956. Pearson succeeded Saint Laurent as leader of the Liberal Party in 1958 and became prime minister in 1963. His government introduced a national pension plan and a family assistance program, broadened old-age security benefits, and laid the groundwork for the National Free Medical Service. Under Pearson, the government also introduced Canada's first distinctive national flag and adopted an official national anthem. Pearson resigned as prime minister in 1968 and retired from politics.

Of all the great politicians in Canadian history, Lester Bowles Pearson appears to be an exception. Almost thirty years after his death, Pearson is remembered with respect and affection. Public buildings have been named in his honor, as have educational institutions, and most notably Toronto’s International Airport, which bears his name. Pearson is often credited with promoting Canada as a peace-loving country. Lester Bowles Pearson was born on April 23, 1897 in Newtonbrook, Ontario (now a part of Toronto). Born to Irish parents, Lester received a balanced education from his conservative father (a Methodist minister) and his mother (noted for her liberalism).
