Lester Bowles Pearson Canadian Bursary Program
Lansing, Michigan Thomas M. Cooley Law School, America's third largest law school, announces the creation of the Lester Bowles Pearson Canadian Bursary Program. The program is named in honor of the former Prime Minister of Canada who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1957. Mr. Pearson, who was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws from Oxford University, was Prime Minister when the Canada-United States Automotive Agreement was implemented, a significant step in the economic relationship between the two countries. Through the Pearson Program, scholarships are available to qualified Canadian citizens who demonstrate academic competence, good potential for law study, good moral character, a strong desire for an American legal education, and financial need. Implementation of the Program is scheduled for September, 2001. "Canada and the United States share more than a common border," President Thomas E. Brennan said. "We share a common heritage, a common law, a commitment to constitutional democracy and a republican form of government, a free enterprise economic system, and a huge international commercial trade. The Bursary Program recognizes those ties." "One of the purposes of the recently adopted North American Free Trade Agreement is to reduce barriers between our two countries. Because we do not have a common currency, the difference in value of the Canadian and American dollars constitutes a substantial obstacle to Canadians who wish to obtain an American legal education. The Pearson Scholarships are Cooley's response to the call of our federal government to open the markets in the two countries," President Brennan continued. "The Lester Pearson Bursary Program scholarships are designed to recognize the relative strength of the dollars in the two economies."

Lester B Pearson Lester Bowles Pearson born on April 23, 1897 in Newtonbrook, near Toronto. He went to the University of Toronto until 1915. After the World War I he continued his education at Oxford University. He served as ambassador to the US from 1946 through 1947. He was chairman of the U.N. between 1949 and 1951. In 1957 Pearson was awarded Nobel Peace Prize for his greatest diplomatic achievement, proposal of sending an UN Peacekeeping force to the Suez Canal area. Lester Pearson won the Nobel Peace Prize for a successful plan to bring up an international UN peacekeeping force to take the French out of Egypt. This phase of Mr. Pearson's public life was climaxed by his part in defusing the Suez crisis in 1956 that might have burst in World War III. He indeed deserved the Nobel Peace Prize given to him in 1957 for his launch in finding the U.N. Emergency force in Gaza. In 1968 he brought premiers to Ottawa for a summit, he taught them about the education for eight million French speaking Canadians. On December 27, 1972 Lester Bowles Pearson died leaving behind a world that loved him and his wife Maryon and his son Geoffery.

Lester Pearson was involved in the creation of the North Atlantic Treaty, and is especially known for Article Two. Pearson, like Achilles, Hickerson, and others, was trying to create the Atlantic Union of Clarence Streit through Article Two. Article Two is also know as the "Canadian Article." After his long, hard fight for Article Two, Lester never stopped trying to get it fully implemented. In May of 1956 - Lester was appointed to a committee - the Committee of the Three - AKA the "Three Wise Men." *See "More than Military" essay about the non-military aspect of the Treaty - and its Article Two - and Lester's fight for it! Pearson signing the Atlantic Pact - 4 Apr. 49 - for Canada - and his beloved Article Two! Pearson calls 1956 the busiest and the most exciting of his career. Part of the Committee's questioning were the development of non-military aspects of the Alliance and keeping the Alliance together if the fear of a threat were removed.
