For four decades Lester Bowles Pearson
Born in Toronto of Irish stock on both sides of his family, he received a balanced education in politics, learning the conservative position from his father, a Methodist minister, and the liberal from his mother. Pearson entered Victoria College at the University of Toronto in 1913 at the age of sixteen. Too young to enlist as a private when Canada declared war in 1914, he volunteered to serve with a hospital unit sponsored by the University. After two years in England, Egypt, and Greece, he was commissioned and transferred eventually to the Royal Flying Corps, but, sustaining some injuries from two accidents, one of them a plane crash, he was invalided home. He served as a training instructor for the rest of the war, meanwhile continuing his studies at the University. He received his degree in 1919 and then worked for two years for Armour and Company, a meat processing firm; years later he said, with the wit for which he is renowned, that the Russians were claiming he had once worked for an armament manufacturer.
Returning to academic life, Pearson won a two-year fellowship and enrolled at

The Right Honourable
Lester Bowles Pearson Address on the Inauguration of the National Flag of Canada - February 15, 1965
On September 5, 1945 an Order-in-Council was passed declaring the Red Ensign to be Canada's National Flag pending a decision of the Parliament of Canada. Such a decision was made in December 1964 after long and vigorous Parliamentary debate and careful Committee consideration and recommendation. As a result of this decision by the Canadian Parliament and on the advice of the Government of Canada, Her Majesty, our beloved Queen, was pleased to issue a Proclamation that the Flag we are about to raise today should be the Flag of Canada. So, at noon today, in this eighth month of our ninety-eighth year as a Confederation, our new Flag will fly for the first time in the skies above Canada and in places overseas where Canadians serve. If our nation, by God's grace, endures a thousand years, this day, the 15th day of February, 1965, will always be remembered as a milestone in Canada's national progress. (Translation) It is impossible for me not to be deeply moved on such an occasion or to be insensible to the honour and privilege of taking part in it.

Prime Minister pearson's remarks on the opening of Expo '67 in Montreal, April 27, 1967.

The Right Honourable
Lester Bowles Pearson Remarks at the Opening of Expo 67, Montreal - April 27, 1967
(Translation) This is a proud day for Montreal, for Quebec and above all for Canada. (Text) The heading of an article about Expo in a recent issue of an American magazine referred to it as, "The Big Blast Up North". Certainly Expo is going to be that - and much more. Behind this big Canadian birthday "blast" are achievements in planning, organization and construction that are little short of miraculous. The men behind these achievements should be proud and happy. We should be grateful to them, as we recall the skeptics who once said Expo 67 was too big a project for Montreal, Quebec or Canada to accomplish in less than four years. But it was done - and well done. We are witnesses today to the fulfilment of one of the most daring acts of faith in Canadian enterprise and ability ever undertaken. That faith was not misplaced. But Expo is much more than a great Canadian achievement of design and planning and construction. It is also a monument to Man. It tells the exciting and inspiring story of a world that belongs not to any one nation but to every nation. No theme could have been more fitting for our times than "Man and His World". Here in Expo we have one of the most impressive collections of Man's works and Man's ideas ever brought together.

Lester Bowles Pearson (1897-1972) When Lester B. Pearson became Canada's 14th Prime Minister, he had already received the Nobel Peace Prize for creating the United Nations peace-keeping force during his term as President of the General Assembly of the United Nations. While Prime Minister, Pearson's government established the Canada Pension Plan, universal health care and the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism. It also adopted a striking new flag. Thanks to Pearson's initiatives at the United Nations, that flag is now recognized world wide as the symbol of a peace-loving nation. Danek Mozdzenski, the Edmonton-based sculptor responsible for creating this monument, completed the statue in 1989. From where the monument sits, at least twelve Canadian flags can be seen flying in the skies above Ottawa.
