    Pauling, Linus (1901-1994)

American quantum chemist, biochemist, and peace advocate. As a graduate student at the California Institute of Technology, he studied X-ray diffraction of crystals with Rosco Dickinson. Curiously enough, Pauling had never even received his high school diploma because he refused to take a course in civics. Pauling was an innovator in many aspects of chemistry. As one acquaintance remarked, "Linus's bad ideas are better than most people's good ones." (Serafini 1991, p. 101). In 1925, he won a Guggenheim fellowship which he used to study under Sommerfeld at Munich. Soon after his return, he became a professor at Caltech. Early in his career, Pauling published "The Theoretical Prediction of the Physical Properties of Many Electron Atoms and Ions," which demonstrated that the structure of electron orbitals in complicated atoms could be described with quantum mechanics. In 1928, he set down the six Pauling's rules governing the placement of atoms in ionic solids. In 1928, he published a paper on orbital hybridization (resonance structures). In 1931, he published "The Nature of the Chemical Bond," which became the basis for his book of that title published in 1932. This book was the first to apply quantum mechanics to chemistry. In a 1936 paper with Coryell, he reported that hemoglobin in arteries is repelled by a magnet, but that in veins is attracted. In another 1936 paper, this one with Mirsky, he proposed that

Linus Pauling (February 28, 1901- ) , the only person who has won two undivided Nobel Prizes, was born in Portland, Oregon, the son of a pharmacist, Henry H.W. Pauling, and Lucy (Darling) Pauling. He attended Washington High School in Portland but because of a technicality did not receive his diploma until 1962, long after he had received his bachelor's degree from Oregon State College in 1922, his doctorate from the California Institute of Technology in 1925, and honorary degrees from universities in seven countries.
With the help of a National Research Council fellowship in 1925-1926 and a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship in 1926-1927, he studied with three physicists: Arnold Sommerfeld in Munich, Erwin Schrodinger in Zurich, and Niels Bohr in Copenhagen. From 1927 until 1964, he was a member of the professorial staff of California Institute of Technology, earning a reputation as a gifted teacher - articulate, enthusiastic, with a talent for simplification and a willingness to engage in controversy. For twenty-two of those thirty-seven years, he was chairman of the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, as well as director of the Gates and Crellin Laboratories of Chemistry.
From 1963 to 1967, Pauling was attached to the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions at Santa Barbara, California, as a research professor; from 1967 to 1969, he was a professor of chemistry at the

Welcome to the Linus Pauling Institute
Our mission is to determine the function and role of micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) and phytochemicals (chemicals from plants) in promoting optimum health and preventing and treating disease; to determine the role of oxidative and nitrative stress and antioxidants in human health and disease; and to advance knowledge in areas that were of interest to Linus Pauling through research and educational activities. Major areas of research in the Institute encompass heart disease, cancer, aging, and neurodegenerative diseases. Specific laboratories address antioxidants and vascular biology; vitamin E metabolism and biological activity; colon cancer and cancer chemoprevention by phytochemicals; the role of nitric oxide and oxidative stress in neurodegenerative diseases, such as ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease); and the role of oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction in the aging process. The Linus Pauling Institute was established at Oregon State University in August 1996 under an agreement reached between OSU and its antecedent organization, the Linus Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine (located in California from 1973 to 1996). The Institute functions from the basic premise that an optimum diet is the key to optimum health.

TEXT ONLY Linus Pauling and the Twentieth Century is a traveling exhibit celebrating the life of one of the world's great scientists and peace activists.
Linus Pauling Linus Pauling's life spanned the twentieth century. He was born in 1901 and died in 1994 and his achievements and struggles are a remarkable mirror of that era. Pauling's work earned him two Nobel Prizes: one for Chemistry in 1954 and one for Peace in 1962. His endeavors in both areas continue to effect and change the lives of people throughout the world. Created with the assistance of the Pauling Family and Oregon State University, the Linus Pauling exhibition was developed to expose young people to the life and work of this influential scientist.
