The Nature of the chemical Bond (1939), connaît plusieurs éditions et reste le livre référence de plusieurs jeunes scientifiques.

Early life
Pauling was born in Portland, Oregon . His father, an unsuccessful druggist, moved his family to a number of different cities in Oregon from to , finally returning to Portland that year. When the elder Pauling died in of a perforated ulcer , Linus' mother was left to care for him and two younger siblings. Pauling was a voracious reader as a child, and at one point his father wrote a letter to a local paper inviting suggestions of additional books that would occupy his time. A friend, Lloyd Jeffress, had a small chemistry laboratory in his bedroom when Pauling was in grammar school , and Jeffress' laboratory experiments inspired Pauling to plan to become a chemical engineer In high school, Pauling continued to experiment in chemistry, borrowing much of the equipment and materials from an abandoned steel company near which his grandfather worked as a night watchman. Pauling failed to take some required American history courses and did not qualify for his high school diploma. The school awarded him the diploma 45 years later, after he had won two Nobel Prizes!

Linus Carl Pauling was born in Portland, Oregon, on February 28, 1901. His education was delayed because of financial responsibility for his mother and younger siblings (his father died when he was 9). In 1925 he received his Ph.D. in chemistry at the California Institute of Technology, where he served on the faculty until 1964. In 1969, Dr. Pauling became Research Professor, then president, at Linus Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine, Menlo Park, California. Dr. Pauling has been deeply concerned with the alleviation of human suffering and has taken some unpopular positions. For example, he was against cigarette smoking, war, nuclear weapons, and allowing preventable hereditary diseases in humans to continue. His achievements in science, medicine, and human welfare have brought him many honorary degrees and awards, including the 1954 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1962. He has published more than 400 papers and books including General Chemistry, The Architecture of Molecules

He was among the first to apply the quantum theory to calculations of molecular structures; his book The Nature of the Chemical Bond (1939, 3d ed. 1960) is still the classic in the field. He developed the concept of resonance to explain covalent bonds in certain organic compounds (see chemical bond ). His later work concerned molecular biology; using physical techniques, he determined the three-dimensional structures of many antitoxins, amino acids, and proteins. He was the first recipient of two honors awarded by the American Chemical Society: the Langmuir prize (1931) and the Lewis medal (1951). Outside of his scientific work, Pauling took a vital interest in public affairs, especially the movement for world disarmament. His No More War See T. Hager

Written by: Unregistered Linus Carl Pauling was born Feb. 28, 1901 in Portland Oreg. He has made major contributions in structural chemistry and molecular biology. Linus Pauling became interested in biological molecules, and he preformed magnetic studies on oxygen-carrying hemoglobin molecules with C. D. Coryell. Linus developed a structural theory of denatured and coagulated protein molecules. He was interrupted on his work during WWII he had to work on explosives and developed an oxygen detector. He proposed the alpha helix as the basic structure of proteins and nearly missed discovering the double-helix structure of DNA. In 1954 he was awarded the NOBEL PRIZE for chemistry for his outstanding contributions toward understanding chemical bonding.Linus spoke out against nuclear testing after WW II. Linus presented a petition to the U.N signed by 11,000 scientists. This led to the U.S.-Soviet test-ban treaty. This led to Linus winning the Nobel Peace Prize. Later on in his career he looked into medical issues like he found out sickle-cell disease is hereditary, and he investigated into MEGAVITAMIN THERAPY(the use of large amounts of vitamins for health purposes).

LINUS CARL PAULING was born in Portland, Oregon, on February 28, 1901, and died at his ranch at Big Sur, California, on August 19, 1994. In 1922 he married Ava Helen Miller (died 1981), who bore him four children: Linus Carl, Peter Jeffress, Linda Helen (Kamb), and Edward Crellin. EARLY YEARS Pauling was the first child of Herman Pauling, son of German immigrants, and Lucy Isabelle (Darling) Pauling, descended from pre-revolutionary Irish stock. There were two younger daughters: Pauline Darling (born 1902) and Lucile (born 1904). Herman Pauling worked for a time as a traveling salesman for a medical supply company and moved in 1905 to Condon, Oregon, where he opened his own drugstore. It was in this new boom town in the arid country east of the coastal range that Pauling had his first schooling. He learned to read early and started to devour books. In 1910 the family moved back to Portland, where his father wrote a letter to The Oregonian , a local newspaper, asking for advice about suitable reading matter for his nine-year-old son, who had already read the Bible and Darwin's theory of evolution. We do not know the replies, but Pauling later confessed that one of his favorites was the

Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN 47907 In the highest sense of the word, all great scientists are great teachers: we live by the lessons they have taught. But by no means all great scientist are great teachers in the more prosaic sense of the term. Linus Pauling was a glorious exception. He taught superbly at all levels. As a lecturer he was peerless, whether the audience were professional or lay, young or old, friendly or unfriendly. In many ways he was an actor manque: the oddly cadenced speech, the mastery of the vivid phrase, the extravagant gesture, the dramatic pause, and the mesmerizing ability to pull numbers out of a hat and to conjure up images of atoms in space. As an author he covered an immense range, Structure of Line Spectra, Introduction to Quantum Mechanics, The Nature of the Chemical Bond, General Chemistry, College Chemistry, The Architecture of Molecules, No More War, Vitamin C and the Common Cold, How to Live Longer and Feel Better . With his occasional contributions to the alternate press of Haight-Ashbury in the 1960's he even wrote for the flower-child-in-the-street. He was a great friend of chemical education. As he wrote to Isaac Asimov: "I always read the
