    Linus Carl Pauling
February 28th, 1901 (Portland, Oregon, USA) - August 19th, 1994 Linus Pauling was one of the most prominent scientists of the twentieth century and an opponent to nuclear weapons. He was awarded the nobel prize in chemistry in 1954 for his work on the molecular structure of proteins, and the nobel prize in peace in 1962 for his efforts to halt nuclear testing. He had a chair at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena and at Stanford University. In 1973, he founded the "Linus Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine" in Palo Alto, California. He was also famous for his promotion of vitamin C. Pauling's controversial thesis was that high doses of vitamin C would help not only in the prevention of the common cold but also in the prevention of cancer.

Chemiker, Molekularbiologe Linus Pauling * 28.

Pauling, Linus Carl US theoretical chemist and biologist whose ideas on chemical bonding are fundamental to modern theories of molecular structure. He also investigated the properties and uses of vitamin C as related to human health. He won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry 1954 and the Nobel Peace Prize 1962, having campaigned for a nuclear test-ban treaty.
Pauling was born in Portland, Oregon, and studied at Oregon State Agricultural College, getting his PhD from the California Institute of Technology. In Europe 1925-27, he met the chief atomic scientists of the day. He became professor at Caltech 1931, and was director of the Gates and Crellin Laboratories 1936-58 and of the Linus Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine in Menlo Park, California 1973-75.
Pauling's work on the nature of the chemical bond included much new information about interatomic distances. Applying his knowledge of molecular structure to proteins in blood, he discovered that many proteins have structures held together with hydrogen bonds, giving them helical shapes.
He was a pioneer in the application of quantum mechanical principles to the structures of molecules, relating them to interatomic distances and bond angles by X-ray and electron diffraction, magnetic effects, and thermochemical techniques. In 1928, Pauling introduced the concept of hybridization of bonds. This provided a clear basic insight into the framework structure of all carbon compounds, that is, of the whole of organic chemistry. He also studied electronegativity of atoms and polarization (movement of electrons) in chemical bonds. Electronegativity values can be used to show why certain substances, such as hydrochloric acid, are acid, whereas others, such as sodium hydroxide, are alkaline. Much of this work was consolidated in his book The Nature of the Chemical Bond 1939.

Linus Carl Pauling biography gives details about this genius won two Nobel Prizes. Learn why this man was one of the greatest accomplished geiuses of our time...
Widely acknowledged as one of the greatest scientists ever, Linus Pauling was nevertheless a very controversial and outspoken person. In fact it was this very facet of his personality that earned him the Nobel Peace Prize, for his stance against nuclear weapons. Due to his forthright nature, he was labelled a communist, forced to defend himself before two Congressional Committees, risked his job, and even had his passport revoked, so that he could not travel abroad. Linus Carl Pauling was born on 28th February 1901, and his father died when he was nine years old, forcing him to take up odd jobs to support his mother, sisters, as well as pay for his education. Even at this early age the controversial side of Linus Pauling's nature showed up, when he refused to take a class in civics which was needed in order to obtain a High School Diploma, contending that he had already read up about civics. He was finally awarded the diploma after he received his second Nobel Prize, the 1962 Peace Award, and the authorities finally accepted his viewpoint. bodyOffer(32397) Having obtained his bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from the Oregon Agricultural College, he joined the California Institute of Technology, to complete his PhD in Chemistry. He began working on crystals, and was criticised by many for deciding on what the structure was and then fitting the data in to suit his findings. This intuitive approach to research was not appreciated as throughout his career, Pauling would frequently reach his conclusions without sufficient data.

Pauling received his B.S. in chemical engineering at Oregon State Agricultural College (now Oregon State University), Corvallis, in 1922, then became a graduate assistant at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, where he took his Ph.D. in physical chemistry in 1925. For two years he was a postdoctoral fellow in Europe, working in the laboratories of such noted scientists as Arnold Sommerfeld in Munich, Niels Bohr in Copenhagen, Sir William Henry Bragg in London. He returned to the California Institute of Technology as assistant professor of chemistry in 1927, becoming full professor in 1931 and serving as director of the Gates and Crellin Laboratories of Chemistry between 1936 and 1958.
