He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958, an honour which he was later forced to decline by the Russian authorities, due to the harsh depiction of life under communism in Dr Zhivago Although avant-garde, Boris Pasternak's early lyrical poetry, including Twin in the Clouds Over the Barriers 1917, and My Sister Life 1922, established him as an important new voice in Russia before and during the First World War. For the ten years between 1933 to 1945 Pasternak was forbidden to publish anything at all, as the state considered his work and aims contrary to the aims of communism. Instead he made his livelihood by translating classic works of Shakespeare, Goethe, Paul Verlaine and Rainer Maria Rilke, fearing for his safety but spared during the terrifying intellectual purges of the 1930's. His autobiographical work Safe Conduct (1931) and the collection of poetry Second Birth (1932) were his last original works for some years.

Add to a Notebook Boris Pasternak Boris Leonidovich Pasternak, the oldest child of painter Leonid Pasternak and pianist Roza Kaufman, was born in Moscow in 1890. His father taught art at the school which essentially served as Pasternak's childhood home. His parents received constant visits from prominent Moscow writers, artists, and intellectuals, including, the yet unknown Rainer Maria Rilke in 1899, whose writing greatly influenced Pasternak. In addition to his parents, Pasternak's teachers were private tutors until he entered high school in 1901, where he received a classical education. While he drew well, to the delight of his father, his first love was botany and second, music. Inspired by the composer Scriabin, who was a friend of the family, Pasternak devoted six years to the study of composition. Three finished piano pieces composed by the young poet have survived from these years. Although everyone assumed that Pasternak would become a professional musician, he was wary of his lack of technical skill. In 1909 he gave up his musical career for good when he entered the Law Faculty at Moscow University. He soon turned to philosophy, and although he appeared to be heading toward an academic career, he ultimately gave it up in 1912 to pursue his true calling: poetry. Yet his poetry and prose would always bear the mark of his youthful enthusiasms for music and philosophy.

He studied philosophy at the University of Marburg in Germany , with Hermann Cohen and Nicolai Hartmann , but although invited to become a scholar, decided against philosophy as a profession. Doctor Zhivago
Nobel Prize Winners (1958)
Author Info: Boris Pasternak
Man is born to live, not to prepare for life. Life itself, the phenomenon of life, the gift of life, is so
breathtakingly serious!
-Boris Pasternak
Most of us are only familiar with Doctor Zhivago from the epic David Lean film version Zhivago himself, the name means "life" in Russian, is a pretty docile leading man. The story follows him as he is buffeted by the winds of change in Russia from 1903 to his death sometime after WWII.
But Doctor Zhivago is understood to be semi autobiographical and to the extent that Zhivago is acted upon rather than acting himself, perhaps he is intended to convey Pasternak's own ambivalence about the role he had played by remaining in Soviet Union and continuing to work. Indeed, there is a really poignant moment in Isaiah Berlin's piece on the author , where Pasternak, near desperation, seeks to solicit Berlin's opinion on whether people believe that he has collaborated with the government because he remained in the USSR or whether they instead accept that he felt compelled to stay. In fairness to Pasternak, it should not be necessary to leave a country (as did Solzhenitsyn) or be disappeared (as was Isaac Babel) or be imprisoned (as were countless others) in order to demonstrate the legitimacy of your opposition to an evil government. To be honest, the subtlety of Pasternak's message and our increasing distance from the time when even such subtleties could prove incendiary, served to deaden the effect of a novel which already suffers from being a tad too episodic. In the final analysis, I guess I respected the book more than enjoyed it and found it more interesting as a key artifact of an age that is quickly receding from memory than compelling as a novel.
