Wilhelm Ostwald 1853 bis 1932 „Ich habe inzwischen die Farbenlehre von Grund aus neu bearbeitet und bin jetzt so weit in der quantitativ begründeten Chroma­tik ge­langt, dass ich auch das alte Problem von der Harmonie der Farben grundsätzlich gelöst habe. – Ich habe ungefähr fünf Jahre unausge­setzt und mit aller Anspannung an dieser Sa­che gearbeitet und glaube, es ist das beste geworden, was ich in meinem Le­ben gemacht habe.“ So hoch schätzt ein Nobelpreisträger der Chemie, der als Begründer einer ganzen Wis­senschaftssparte –der Physikalischen Chemie- gilt, seine Arbeit zu den Farben ein. Trotzdem ist sein Farbordnungssystem in Zeiten von DIN-, NCS- Farbtonkarten als ver­gessen und nicht mehr existent zu beschreiben. Sollte man dann nicht eine Möglichkeit schaffen, um diesen Widerspruch zu ergründen? Wilhelm Ostwald hatte es seinen Studenten durch Herausgabe einer preiswerten Schriftenreihe ( Ostwald’s Klassiker der exakten Wissenschaften) ermöglicht, Original­texte zu lesen. Ich möchte jetzt den gleichen Weg gehen um durch Veröffentlichung von Ostwaldtexten dem Interessierten die Möglichkeit zu geben, sich ein eigenes Ur­teil bil­den zu können. Ich musste allerdings schnell erkennen , dass auch in Zeiten von Scannern und OCR-Programmen dieses Projekt Jahre in Anspruch nehmen wird. Wilhelm Ostwald (1853-1932) German chemist, was born in Riga, in September 2nd 1853, and died in Grossbothem, Germany, in April 4th 1932. Graduated at the University of Dorpat and in 1875 became Physics assistant, in the University of Riga. In 1877, was appointed director of the Physics and Chemistry Institute in Leipzig. Ostwald, a pioneer in the Physical-Chemistry area, defended the theory of electrolytic dissociation of Arrhenius . The contribution of Ostwald to this theory was based on his studies of affinity constants for acids and bases and of reaction speeds. Founded the Journal of Physical-Chemistry in 1887, invented the Ostwald viscometer and, in 1900, developed the Ostwald-Brauer process for producing nitric acid from ammonia, using platinum as catalyst. The combination of Haber and Ostwald processes led to the possibility of explosive synthesis for the 1914-18 war. Ever since, these processes are used world wide to produce explosives and fertilizers. In Leipzig, Ostwald built a special laboratory sought by students from all over the world to study the new science - Chemiscal-Physics. This laboratory was home of the best teachers and researchers in the following decades. Besides his scientific career, Ostwald tried to develop an universal language, and was also a painter. This activity led him to develop the chemistry of color.

Formou-se na Universidade de Dorpat e tornou-se assistente de Física, em 1875, na Universidade de Riga. Em 1877 foi nomeado director do Physicochemical Institute em Leipzig. Ostwald, um pioneiro na área de físico-química, tendo defendido vigorosamente a teoria de dissociação electrolítica de S. A. Arrhenius . A contribuição de Ostwald para esta teoria baseou-se no estudo das constantes de afinidade de ácidos e bases, e das velocidades de reacção. Fundou o Journal of Physical Chemistry em 1887, inventou o viscosímetro de Ostwald e, em 1900, desenvolveu o processo Ostwald-Brauer para o fabrico de ácido nítrico a partir da amónia, usando como catalisador a platina . Mais tarde foi possível, pelo processo de Haber -Bosh, tornar a produção de amónia mais económica. Pela combinação dos processos de Haber e Ostwald a Alemanha pôde sintetizar explosivos para a Primeira Guerra Mundial. He almost single-handedly organized physical chemistry into a nearly independent branch of chemistry. Nobel Laureate (1909) in Chemistry in recognition of his work on catalysis and for his investigations into the fundamental principles governing chemical equilibria and rates of reaction, best known to electrochemists for the theory of electrolyte solutions. Wilhelm Ostwald was born on September 2, 1853, in Riga, Latvia, as the son of master-cooper Gottfried Wilhelm Ostwald and Elisabith Leuckel. Wilhelm Ostwald Old building of Riga Polytechnical Institute (now - main building of the University of Latvia) (old design, 1869) Wilhelm Ostwald was educated at the "Real gymnasium" in Riga and became interested in chemistry at an early age; as an eleven year old he made his own fireworks. In 1872 he was admitted to Dorpat University (now Tartu State University, Tartu, Estonia) to read chemistry. After taking his final examinations three years later, he obtained the post of assistant at the Physics Institute under Professor Arthur von Oettingen, and subsequently took a similar position in the Chemistry Laboratory under Carl Schmidt. Ostwald himself declared that he was most indebted to these two teachers for his scientific training. In 1877 he was admitted as unpaid academic lecturer at Dorpat University, and this was followed (1881) by the appointment of full time Professor of Chemistry at the Polytechnicum in Riga.
