Ostwald, Wilhelm, Wilhelm Ostwald Hulton Deutsch Collection/Corbis in full FRIEDRICH WILHELM OSTWALD (b. Sept. 2, 1853, Riga, Latvia, Russian Empired. April 4, 1932, near Leipzig, Ger.), German chemist who almost single-handedly organized physical chemistry into a nearly independent branch of chemistry. He won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1909 for his work on catalysis, chemical equilibrium, and reaction velocities. Ostwald took his doctorate from the University of Dorpat (now Tartu State University, Tartu, Estonia) in 1878 and taught at Riga before going to the University of Leipzig (1887-1906). He was quick to espouse the theories of Svante Arrhenius and Jacobus Henricus van't Hoff, with whom he placed physical chemistry on a firm basis. It was probably as author and editor, however, that he most helped to advance the science. He wrote Lehrbuch der allgemeinen Chemie, 2 vol. (1885-87; "Textbook of General Chemistry") and other influential texts and was chiefly responsible for the founding (1887) of the ("Journal of Physical Chemistry"), long the most influential publication in the field. He translated Gibbs's works into German in 1892, and founded the first journal of physical chemistry with van't Hoff . He presented the modern view of catalysis, namely that catalysts do not alter the reaction mechanism, but merely lower the reaction barrier, for which he was awarded to Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1909. He developed a theory of solutions based on ionic dissociation and an analogy between gases and chemical solutions similar to Arrhenius's . Ostwald, Wilhelm Latvian-born German chemist who devised the Ostwald process (the oxidation of ammonia over a platinum catalyst to give nitric acid). His work on catalysts laid the foundations of the petrochemical industry. Nobel Prize for Chemistry 1909. Ostwald was born in Riga and studied at the University of Dorpat (Tartu) in Estonia. He was professor at Riga 1881-87 and at Leipzig 1887-1906, and was from 1898 the first director of Leipzig's Physicochemical Institute. In 1888, he proposed the Ostwald dilution law, which relates the degree of dissociation of an electrolyte, , to its total concentration c expressed in moles per litre (dm3). It states that: k = 2c/(1 -) The constant, k, neglects the activity coefficient and is therefore not a true thermodynamic constant K. The equation is important historically because it was the form in which the law of mass action was first applied to solutions of weak organic acids and bases. Ostwald then worked on the theory of acid-base indicators. From 1909 Ostwald became interested in the methodology and organizational aspects of science, in a world language, internationalism, and pacifism. He also built a laboratory for colour research.

Il n'a pas été seulement un pionnier dans cette branche grâce à ses travaux et à ceux de ses élèves; il a joué aussi un rôle important par ses articles, ses livres, les périodiques et les organismes qu'il a créés pour le développement de la chimie physique. C'est en outre pour une bonne part grâce à lui que furent reconnus les travaux d' Arrhenius , alors qu'ils étaient mis en doute par de très éminents chimistes. En 1887, il fonda la première revue de chimie physique, Zeitschrift für Physikalische Chemie, qui paraît toujours. Van't Hoff fut son coediteur, et la liste des collaborateurs comporte les plus grands noms de la chimie. Le premier tome est tout à fait remarquable; il comprend les célèbres travaux de Van't Hoff sur la pression osmotique, ceux d'Arrhenius sur la dissociation des sels en solution aqueuse, sans oublier les résultats d'Ostwald lui-même concemant l'influence de la force des acides sur les vitesses de diverses réactions.
