Lars Onsager , the son of a barrister, was born in Oslo, Norway , on 27th November, 1903. He graduated from Norwegian Institute of Technology (1926-28) before studying with Peter Debye at Zurich University. Over the next few years Onsager developed his theory of electrolytes.
In 1928 Onsager moved to the United States where he studied at John Hopkins University and Brown University. His thesis on reversible processes was considered incomprehensible by the chemistry, physics and mathematics departments at Brown University before Onsager finally got his PhD.
In 1933 Onsager moved to Harvard University but his lectures were unpopular with students who named his courses as "Stadistical Mechanics" and "Advanced Norwegian". His research was much more successful and he eventually found a firm statistical basis for the theory of liquid crystals. Onsager, who became a naturalized American citizen in 1945, won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1968. Lars Onsager died in 1976.

Onsager relations
Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition In thermodynamics Thermodynamics is the study of energy, its conversions between various forms, the ability of energy to do work, and the spontaneity of processes. It is closely related to statistical mechanics from which many thermodynamic relationships can be derived. While dealing with processes in which systems exchange matter or energy, classical thermodynamics is not concerned with the rate at which such processes take place, and on that account it is sometimes called equilibrium thermodynamics . In this connection, a central concept in thermodynamics is that of quasistatic processes, which are idealized, "infinitely slow" processes. Time-dependent thermodynamic processes are studied by non-equilibrium thermodynamics.
Click the link for more information. , the Onsager reciprocal relations express the equality of certain relations between flow For the metalurgical definition see Flux (metallurgy); for the definition in psychology, see Flow (psychology); for the book by Stephen Baxter see Flux (book) Flux is the flow that occurs as a result of a potential difference. It can be described as a through variable, where potential difference is the across variable. The product of the flux and the potential difference is the power, which is the rate of change of the conserved quantity, e.g energy.

Lars Onsager
Lars Onsager
Norwegian-born American chemist whose development of a general theory of irreversible chemical processes gained him the 1968 Nobel Prize for Chemistry.
His early work in statistical mechanics attracted the attention of the Dutch chemist Peter Debye, under whose direction Onsager studied at the Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich (1926-28). He then went to the United States and taught at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, and Brown University, Providence, R.I. He received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1935. He had joined the faculty of Yale in 1933 and became professor of theoretical chemistry there in 1945. Onsager's first achievement was to modify (1925) the Debye-Huckel theory of electrolytic dissociation, which describes the motions of ions in solution, to take into account Brownian movement. He received the Nobel Prize for his pioneering work on nonequilibrium thermodynamics, which applied the laws of thermodynamics to systems that are not in equilibriumi.e., to systems in which differences in temperature, pressure, or other factors exist. Onsager also was able to formulate a general mathematical expression about the behaviour of nonreversible chemical processes that has been described as the "fourth law of thermodynamics."

Lars Onsager
After three years with the experienced educators Inga and Anna Platou in Oslo, one year at a deteriorating private school in the country and a few months of his mother's tutoring, he entered Frogner School as the family returned to Oslo. There he was soon invited to jump a grade, so that he was able to graduate in 1920.
After graduation in 1925 he accompanied Holtsmark on a trip to Denmark and Germany, then proceeded to Zurich, where he remained for a couple of months with Debye
In 1928 he went to Baltimore and served for the spring term as Associate in Chemistry at Johns Hopkins University . The appointment was not renewed; but C.A. Kraus at Brown University engaged him as an instructor, and he remained in that position for five years. During this time he gave lectures on statistical mechanics, published the reciprocal relations and made progress on a variety of problems. Some of the results were published at the time, one with the able assistance of R.M. Fuoss; others formed the basis for later publications. In 1933 he accepted a Sterling Fellowship at Yale University , where he remained to serve as Assistant Professor 1934-1940, Associate Professor 1940-1945 and JosiahWillard Gibbs Professor of Theoretical Chemistry 1945-1972. Incidentally, he obtained a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry from Yale in 1935; his dissertation consisted of the mathematical background for his interpretation of deviations from Ohm's law in weak electrolytes.

Lars Onsager: "Biographical Memoirs"
An essay prepared for the National Academy of Sciences is presented on the website of Yale University. (Onsager served as a professor at Yale from 1933-1972.) Authored by H. Christopher Longuet-Higgins and Michael E. Fisher, portions will be unfathomable to those not versed in physics. For example: "The non-equilibrium state itself would be represented by an ensemble that maximized the entropy S subject to the [alpha particle]i having specified values; the 'forces' conjugate to the [alpha particle]i would be the partial derivatives of S with respect to the displacements...." The article is, however, quite well written, and worth reading even by those who will skip over the technical portions. It captures the essence of this man of extraordinary scientific accomplishment who, typically of Norwegians, eschewed pomposity. It tells of his wit, his humor, and his outlook. This version lacks equations and illustrations. The full version appears, along with articles on other deceased members of the academy, on the website of the Universal Library Project, located at Carnegie Mellon University. It's slow to load, starting as it does on Page 183. The text will appear well in advance of the graphics.
