Ochoa, Severo
Severo Ochoa, 1959 UPI/Corbis-Bettmann (b. Sept. 24, 1905, Luarca, Spaind. Nov. 1, 1993, Madrid), molecular biologist who received (with the American biochemist Arthur Kornberg ) the 1959 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for discovery of an enzyme in bacteria that enabled him to synthesize ribonucleic acid (RNA), a substance of central importance to the synthesis of proteins by the cell. Ochoa was educated at the University of Madrid, where he received his M.D. in 1929. He then spent two years studying the biochemistry and physiology of muscle under the German biochemist Otto Meyerhof at the University of Heidelberg. He also served as head of the physiology division, Institute for Medical Research, at the University of Madrid (1935). He investigated the function in the body of thiamine (vitamin B ) at the University of Oxford (1938-41) and became a research associate in medicine (1942) and professor of pharmacology (1946) at New York University, New York City, where he became professor of biochemistry and chairman of the department in 1954. From 1974 to 1985 he was associated with the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology; thereafter he taught at the Autonomous University of Madrid. Ochoa became a U.S. citizen in 1956. Ochoa made the discovery for which he received the Nobel Prize in 1955, while conducting research on high-energy phosphates. He named the enzyme he discovered

Ochoa, Severo He was born at Luarca, Spain, on September 24th, 1905. He is the son of Severo Ochoa, a lawyer and business man, and Carmen de Albornoz.
After graduating in 1929 Ochoa went, with the aid of the Spanish Council of Scientific Research, to work under Otto Meyerhof at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institut für Medizinische Forschung at Heidelberg. During this period he worked on the biochemistry and physiology of muscle, and his outlook and training were decisively influenced by Meyerhof.
In 1931, Ochoa was appointed Lecturer in Physiology at the University of Madrid, a post he held until 1935. In 1932 he went to the National Institute for Medical Research, London, where he worked with Dr. H. W. Dudley on his first problem in enzymology.
Returning to Madrid in 1934, he was appointed Lecturer in Physiology and Biochemistry there and later became Head of the Physiology Division of the Institute for Medical Research, Madrid. In 1936 he was appointed Guest Research Assistant in Meyerhof's Laboratory at Heidelberg, where he worked on some of the enzymatic steps of glycolysis and fermentation. In 1937 he held a Ray Lankester Investigatorship at the Plymouth Marine Biological Laboratory and from 1938 until 1941 he worked on the biological function of vitamin B with Professor R. A. Peters at Oxford University, where he was appointed Demonstrator and Nuffield Research Assistant.

Ochoa, Severo (24 Sept. 1905-1 Nov. 1993) Ochoa made the transition from physiology to biochemistry when performing experiments on muscular contraction. In 1927 he went to the University of Glasgow to study with Noel Patton, in 1929 to Germany to the laboratory of the Nobelist physiologist Otto Meyerhof In 1940, at the beginning of World War II, Ochoa crossed the Atlantic to Mexico. With the support of the Rockefeller Foundation Refugees Program, he then went to Carl and Gerty Cori 's laboratory at Washington University in St. Louis. In 1942 he moved to New York University as a research associate in medicine. Ochoa's work with distinguished physiologists and physiologist-biochemists, many of them Nobel prize awardees, and his own well-regarded work on oxidation of products of carbohydrate metabolism (the process through which the products of digestion are degraded to small molecules to produce energy for the organism) led him to be regarded as a promising biochemist in the United States. In 1946 he was appointed chair of the NYU department of pharmacology and ten years later chair of the department of biochemistry of the university's medical school. By this time he was already doing research on the enzymes of the cycle of citric acid, proposed by Hans Krebs, and on oxidative phosphorylation (the production of energy coupled with metabolic degradation of carbohydrates). In 1959 Ochoa was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his work on the synthesis of RNA (ribonucleic acid), based on research undertaken with his French postdoctoral student Marianne Grunberg-Manago. (The prize was shared with Arthur Kornberg in recognition of Kornberg's work on DNA synthesis.) In extracts of the oxidative bacteria
