Ferid Murad wurde am 14. September 1936 in Whiting/Indiana geboren. Der Pharmakologe und Arzt wurde 1975 Professor an der University of Virginia School of Medicine in Charlottesville. 1981 wechselte der Professor an die Stanford University und 1988 an die Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. Trotz der Arbeit pflegt Murad ein Hobby: Er sammelt Mercedes-Benz- Wagen und besitzt vier Stück davon. Nobel Prize winner a CWRU School of Medicine graduate
The Department of Pharmacology has to make room for a plaque recognizing yet another Nobel laureate in its new display case of honor. With the announcement Oct. 12 that CWRU graduate Ferid Murad, M.D., Ph.D., shares this year's prize in medicine, the pharmacology department can now count three Nobelists on its honor roll, while the medical school brings its total to eight Nobel winners.
Murad, currently chairman of the Department of Integrative Biology, Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of Texas-Houston, jointly shared the 1998 Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology with Robert F. Furchgott, Ph.D., of the State University of New York in Brooklyn, and Louis J. Ignarro, Ph.D., of the University of California in Los Angeles. They won the prize for their discoveries concerning nitric oxide as a signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system. The Nobel Assembly said that nitric oxide also performs important functions in many systems of the body.
Nathan A. Berger, M.D., vice president for medical affairs and dean of the medical school, said, "It is a great honor to have one of our graduates named a Nobel laureate. Dr. Murad is part of a great legacy at the School of Medicine and in the Department of Pharmacology. We are proud of all the Nobel prize winners associated with the medical school, as well as all of our graduates who everyday contribute to the health and well being of people all over the world."

DAN MILSTEIN - THE CAVALIER DAILY Dr. Ferid Murad expounds upon the chemical wonders of nitric oxide to a crowd of doctors and faculty on Tuesday. By David Z. Rose Only one month after receiving the Nobel Prize for Medicine, Dr. Ferid Murad, former University associate professor, returned to the Health Sciences Center, where he conducted his award-winning research more than 20 years ago. In a slide presentation Tuesday, Murad spoke about nitric oxidethe small compound that earned him science's highest honor. Medical School Dean Robert M. Carey introduced the former health medicine and pharmacology associate professor to an attentive crowd of about 300 doctors, faculty and medical students packed into the overflowing Old Medical School Auditorium. After Carey's introduction, Murad assumed the podium and immediately gave Carey a copy of the gold Nobel Prize medallion for the University.

D ePauw Alumnus Ferid Murad Shares Nobel Prize in Medicine October 12, 1998 Ferid Murad, a 1958 graduate of DePauw University and a native of Whiting, Ind., is one of three researchers today awarded the Nobel Medicine Prize in recognition of their work for discovering that nitric oxide functions as a signal molecule in the cardiovascular system. This discovery is key to the development of Viagra, the anti-impotence drug, and has potential applications for the treatment of heart disease and other illnesses. Murad, a pharmacologist at the University of Texas Health Science Center, shares the Nobel Prize with Robert F. Furchgott, a pharmacologist at the State University of New York-Brooklyn, and Louis J. Ignarro, a pharmacologist at the University of California-Los Angeles. They share the $978,000 prize.
