Ferid Murad: Albanian-American Nobel Prize Winner Prof. Ferid Murad, born in the US, son of an Albanian moslem immigrant father and an American Baptist mother, was awarded the Nobel prize in Medicine in 1998. He received his M.D. Degree in 1965 from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, from which he also received a Ph.D. in Pharmacology that same year. Among other awards/honors that Dr. Murad has earned are the Ciba Award - American Heart Assoc. (1988); NIDDK Bd. of Scientific Counselors (1990-1994) (Chairman, 1993-1994); Lasker Award for Basic Research (1996); Member National Academy of Sciences (1997); Member Inst. of Med. National Academy of Sciences (1998). He is the author/co-author of some 334 medical/scientific publications. The following article about Dr. Murad was excerpted from The Jerusalem Post, November 29, 1998 " Dr. Ferid Murad, chairman of the department of integrative biology and pharmacology at the University of Texas (Houston) Medical School, will receive the Nobel prize along with Robert Furchgott of the State University of New York and Louis Ignarro of the University of Californa at Los Angeles. All three, working independently in Texas, California, and New York, have spent decades conducting basic research on nitric oxide (NO). Not only did their discoveries lead to the use of Viagra for treating impotence, they have now found that NO - which in minute quantities acts as the body's most important signaling molecule - is profoundly involved in blood pressure, heart function, infections, lung problems, and the defense of the body against tumors, as well as having the potential to treat disease.

Ferid Murad - Robert Furchgott - Louis Ignarro Press Release: The 1998 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine NOBELFÖRSAMLINGEN KAROLINSKA INSTITUTET THE NOBEL ASSEMBLY AT THE KAROLINSKA INSTITUTE 12 October 1998 The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute has today decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physiology for Medicine jointly to Robert F. Furchgott, Louis J. Ignarro and Ferid Murad for their discoveries concerning "nitric oxide as a signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system." Ferid Murad, MD and pharmacologist, now in Houston, Texas, analyzed how nitroglycerin and related vasodilating compounds act and discovered in 1977 that they release nitric oxide, which relaxes smooth muscle cells. He was fascinated by the concept that a gas could regulate important cellular functions and speculated that endogenous factors such as hormones might also act through NO. However, there was no experimental evidence to support this idea at the time. Robert F. Furchgott

Ferid Murad Nobel laureate Ferid Murad delivers lecture at IGM by Matt Blakeslee When molecular biologist Ferid Murad and colleagues first published their discoveries about the importance of nitric oxide in the body, the ideas were so unorthodox skeptics merely dismissed them. Nearly three decades later, the work netted the group a Nobel Prize. Murad shared details of the research with a standing room-only audience at the USC Institute for Genetic Medicine on Nov. 14, lecturing about "The Role of Nitric Oxide and Cyclic GMP in Cellular Signaling"the discovery for which he shared the 1998 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The lecture was one in the series of distinguished lectureships in cardiovascular science sponsored by the Memorial Heart Research Foun-dation. The lectureships, which take place twice a year, focus on the genetics behind heart disease. Murad, the John S. Dunn Sr. Distinguished Chair in Physiology and Medicine at the University of Texas-Houston Medical School, discussed the intricacies of the experiments that earned him and two colleagues science's highest honor. Their discovery: that a simple gas called nitric oxide plays a crucial signaling role between cells. The researchers showed how nitric oxide stimulates cells to create more of a molecule inside themselves called cyclic GMP, a so-called second messenger that leads to physiological changes in cells and tissues.
