Joshua Jortner
Biography
Joshua Jortner's scientific interests span a broad range of areas in chemical physics and theoretical chemistry. Jortner's scientific research interests focus on the exploration of the phenomena of energy acquisition, storage and disposal in isolated molecules, clusters, condensed phases and biophysical systems. His scientific work contributed to the dynamics of complex chemical systems from large molecules to biomolecules, through the development of the theory of intramolecular radiationless transitions, electron transfer theory including charge separation in photosynthesis and in biopolymers, cluster size effects and dynamics of large finite systems and dynamics-function relations for biophysical and chemical change. His work had an impact on the development of chemical dynamics, photoselective laser chemistry, ultrafast chemistry, molecular electronics and nanoscience. Jortner is the author or co-author of 670 scientific articles and the co-author and co-editor of 23 books.
Joshua Jortner acted as advisor and mentor to countless colleagues, both junior and senior, in Tel Aviv University, in Israel and around the world. He served as a research supervisor to more than fifty graduate students at Tel Aviv University, and the post doctorate fellows who worked with him shape modern chemical sciences in Israel, Europe and the U.S. His scientific collaboration in Israel and all around the world is extensive and intensive. Jortner has been a major contributor to building and maintaining the strength of chemical physics, the chemical sciences and science and scholarship at Tel Aviv University and in the country.

APRIL / MAY 1997 Archives Features News Notes Charlie Barnes ... In Memoriam Laureates add energy, prestige to FSU faculty By John S. Cole FSU Communications Group Few Southeastern schools can boast of even one Nobel laureate on the faculty. Florida State University has had five. With less than 50 years of graduate science programs under its belt, FSU has already hired more Nobel Prize winners than any other college or university in the Southeast, according to Dr. Steve Edwards, FSU's dean of the faculties. Their presence has done wonders to strengthen and expand not only FSU's science programs but its overall standing in the academic community. "Having Nobel laureates has multiple advantages," said Donald Foss, dean of Arts and Sciences. "They bring a tremendous amount of energy and intelligence to the campus and to the colleagues with whom they work. That helps to energize the university." FSU's first such Nobel-inspired excitement came in the winter of 1966, when chemistry professor Robert S. Mulliken won the prize in chemistry. Mulliken, whose work focused on how molecules interact with one another, was originally a physics professor at the University of Chicago, where he actually did the research that earned him his prize.

USMS - All-Americans Ever
M
USMS Archives databases were maintained through December 31, 2002. For more recent information, please visit usms.org . This report of all USMS All-Americans and each year they were named was important in the process whereby we created databases of our history. Whereever one swimmer's All-American honors were divided over more than one name, as might happen when names were changed in marriage, we changed all information to the current name. Further, these databases were made possible by the use of a "permanent swimmer id code" . The intent was to continue to use the same code even when the swimmer stopped swimming so that the clear identification of this person and his or her swimming records would never be lost. Click here to see source data by year from which this summary was created. Charles J Maas (mas34kd):PL: 1994-1995;
