July 9, 1926, Chicago, Ill., U.S.), American-Danish physicist who won a Nobel Prize for Physics (1975) for his work in determining the asymmetrical shapes of certain atomic nuclei and the reasons behind such asymmetries. Having taken his doctorate in theoretical physics at Harvard University in 1950, Mottelson accepted a fellowship at the Niels Bohr Institute of Theoretical Physics in Copenhagen and then joined the faculty of the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Nuclear Physics there; he subsequently became a naturalized Danish citizen. From experiments conducted in collaboration with Aage N. Bohr in the early 1950s, Mottelson discovered that the motion of subatomic particles can distort the shape of the nucleus, thus challenging the widely accepted theory that all nuclei are perfectly spherical. Subsequently it was discovered that such asymmetries occur in atoms of all elements. For his work, Mottelson was awarded, jointly with Bohr and James Rainwater, the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1975.

Mottelson begyndte at læse fysik under 2. verdenskrig og afsluttede sine studier med en Ph.D. i kernefysik fra Harvard University i 1950. Tiltrukket af det kreative og internationale miljø på Niels Bohrs institut i København udnyttede han et rejsestipendium til et længere ophold der. Kort efter indledte han samarbejdet med Aage Bohr om de kernefysiske problemstillinger, som man havde været optaget af på instituttet siden slutningen af 1930’erne. Midt i 1950'erne arbejdede Mottelson et par år ved det fælleseuropæiske forskningscenter CERN i Geneve. I årene 1957-94 var Mottelson professor ved Nordita, hvorefter han blev professor ved Københavns Universitet. Han blev dansk statsborger i 1971. Den kollektive kernemodel Bohr og Mottelsen fik nobelprisen for deres teorier om atomkernens struktur.

Som søn af Niels Bohr mødte han mange af tidens førende fysikere. Dette inspirerede ham til selv at studere fysik. Samtidig begyndte han at assistere sin far med korrespondance og afhandlinger. Aage Bohr fulgte også med sin far, da han i 1943 måtte flygte til England og senere USA, hvor de begge medvirkede ved udviklingen af atombomben. Efter krigen færdiggjorde han sin uddannelse i København, men returnerede snart til USA, hvor han fik styrket sin interesse for kernefysik. I 1950 bosatte han sig i Danmark og indledte kort efter et tæt og frugtbart samarbejde om atomkernens struktur med Ben Mottelson, som har varet ved lige siden. I 1956 blev Aage Bohr professor ved Institut for teoretisk Fysik (nu Niels Bohr Institutet). Fra 1962 til 1970 var han endvidere leder af instituttet. I perioden 1975-1981 ledede han Nordita (Nordisk Institut for Teoretisk Atomfysik). Den kollektive kernemodel Bohr og Mottelsen fik nobelprisen for deres teorier om atomkernens struktur.
