Mottelson, Ben (Roy) US-born Danish physicist who with Aage Bohr and James Rainwater shared the 1975 Nobel Prize for Physics for their work on the structure of the atomic nucleus.
Mottelson was born in Chicago, Illinois, and educated at Purdue University. Based in Copenhagen from 1950, he was at the Institute of Theoretical Physics to 1953, then held a position at CERN (European Centre for Nuclear Research), and became professor at Nordita 1957.
In the early 1950s, Mottelson and Bohr together confirmed experimentally the theory worked out by Rainwater about the structure of the nucleus. Mottelson published several books and many scientific papers jointly with Bohr.

Mottelson, Ben Roy
Americko-dánský fyzik, V roce 1975 získal Nobelovu cenu za fyziku za objev nesférických atomových jader. Cenu sdílí s A. Bohrem a J. Rainwaterem
Doktorát z teoretické fyziky získal na Harvardu v roce 1950. Mottelson pøijal nabídku práce v Ústavu teoretické fyziky Nielse Bohra v Copenhagenu, kde spolupracoval s A. Bohrem (synem N. Bohra

He was born in Chicago, Illinois For other uses of the term, see Chicago (disambiguation) Chicago is the third largest city in the United States with a population of 2,886,251 (2002). It is located in the state of Illinois, on the shores of Lake Michigan. The city is the county seat of Cook County. The greater Chicago metropolitan area is known colloquially as Chicagoland . The name Chicago comes from "Checagou" (Chick-Ah-Goo-Ah) or "Checaguar" which in the language of the Potawatomi Indians means 'wild onions' or 'skunk'. The area was so named because of the smell of rotting marshland onions that used to cover it.
