Nevill Francis Mott J.J. Thomson in the Cavendish Laboratory ; his great grandfather was Sir John Richardson, the arctic explorer. He was educated at Clifton College , Bristol and St. John's College, Cambridge , where he studied mathematics and theoretical physics. He started research in Cambridge under R.H. Fowler, in Copenhagen under Niels Bohr Max Born , and spent a year as a lecturer at Manchester with W.L. Bragg before accepting a lectureship at Cambridge. Here he worked on collision theory and nuclear problems in Rutherford's laboratory. In 1933 he went to the chair of theoretical physics at Bristol, and under the influence of H. W. Skinner and H. Jones turned to the properties of metals and semiconductors. Work during his Bristol period before the war included a theory of transition metals, of rectification, hardness of alloys (with Nabarro) and of the photographic latent image (with Gurney). After a period of military research in London during the war, he became head of the Bristol physics department, publishing papers on low-temperature oxidation (with Cabrera) and the metal-insulator transition.
In 1954 he was appointed Cavendish Professor of Physics, a post which he held till 1971, serving on numerous government and university committees. The research for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize began about 1965. Some of his main books are "The Theory of Atomic Collisions" (with H.S.W. Massey), "Electronic Processes in Ionic Crystals" (with R.W. Gurney) and "Electronic Processes in Non-Crystalline Materials" (with E.A. Davis).

Sir Nevill F. Mott at the ceremony with his Nobel Prize for Physics, 1977 AP/Wide World Photos in full SIR NEVILL FRANCIS MOTT (b. Sept. 30, 1905, Leeds, West Yorkshire, Eng.d. Aug. 8, 1996, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire), English physicist who shared (with P.W. Anderson and J.H. Van Vleck of the United States) the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1977 for his independent researches on the magnetic and electrical properties of noncrystalline, or amorphous, semiconductors. Mott earned bachelor's (1927) and master's (1930) degrees at the University of Cambridge. He became a professor of theoretical physics at the University of Bristol in 1933. At Bristol his work in solid-state physics included studies of metals and metal alloys, semiconductors, and photographic emulsions. In 1938 Mott devised the theoretical description of the effect that light has on a photographic emulsion at the atomic level. In 1954 he became Cavendish professor of experimental physics at the University of Cambridge, retiring in 1971. Mott's studies of electrical conduction in various metals led him in the 1960s to explore the conductivity potential of amorphous materials, which are so called because their atomic structures are irregular or unstructured. He devised formulas describing the transitions that glass and other amorphous substances can make between electrically conductive (metallic) states and insulating (nonmetallic) states, thereby functioning as semiconductors. These glassy substances, which are relatively simple and cheap to produce, eventually replaced more expensive crystalline semiconductors in many electronic switching and memory devices, and this in turn led to more affordable personal computers, pocket calculators, copying machines, and other electronic devices. Mott was knighted in 1962.

Professor Sir Nevill Mott, CH, Hon.ScD, FRS 1905-1996
Nevill Mott played a major role in the development of solid-state physics, from its infancy in the 1920's when the techniques of quantum mechanics first became available, through to his Nobel-prize winning work on non-crystalline semiconductors in the 1970's, and his final work on high temperature superconductors in the 1990's. He was elected Master of Gonville and Caius College in 1959, and had a generally uncomfortable time. His predecessor was Sir James Chadwick, who had been Rutherford's right-hand man in the Cavendish in the 1930's and had won the Nobel Prize for Physics for the discovery of the neutron. He had returned to Cambridge from Liverpool, where he had built up an excellent Department, but did not find it easy to deal with the strongly factious Fellowship, and had retired early. Mott's experience was similar; following a very acrimonious battle within the fellowship for the appointment of a new Bursar, he came to the view that he did not lead a united Fellowship, and in 1965 he resigned the Mastership. Unlike Chadwick, who is said never to have put a foot inside the College after he resigned, Mott remained in the Fellowship and was active in the College. Nevill Mott was elected to an Honorary Fellowship of the College in 1964, and used his dining privileges from time to time. He was in the College in December 1994, when he gave the after-dinner speech in the Hall at the end of a one-day conference at St. John's. He described where he, Cockcroft, and Dirac sat for dinner in Hall when he was an undergraduate in the 1920s, then touched on the many research areas which he had seen come and go in the Cavendish. In doing so, he spanned the several generations of science to which he had so importantly contributed, and gave us a sense of continuity back to the inception of solid-state physics which no one else could convey. He was without doubt one of the giants of twentieth century physics.

Mott, Sir Nevill Francis
Sklu podobné látky, jejichž výroba je relativnì levná by mohly nahradit dražší krystalické polovodièe, zejména v oblasti osobních poèítaèù, kapesních kalkulátorù, kopírovacích zaøízení, atd. V roce 1962 by N. Mott povýšen do šlechtického stavu.

Born 13 Dec 1923
Philip Warren Anderson is an American physicist who (with John H. Van Vleck and Sir Nevill F. Mott) received the 1977 Nobel Prize for Physics for his research on semiconductors, superconductivity, and magnetism. He made contributions to the study of solid-state physics, and research on molecular interactions has been facilitated by his work on the spectroscopy of gases. He conceived a model (known as the Anderson model) to describe what happens when an impurity atom is present in a metal. He also investigated magnetism and superconductivity, and his work is of fundamental importance for modern solid-state electronics, making possible the development of inexpensive electronic switching and memory devices in computers. John Henry Patterson

Born 13 Dec 1844; died 7 May 1922.
American manufacturer who founded NCR (National Cash Register Co.) and helped popularize the modern cash register by means of aggressive and innovative sales techniques. In the 1870s, when he and his brother Frank established a successful business selling coal and miner's supplies, unrecorded sales were a problem. After reading a description of the cash register designed by James Ritty and sold by the National Manufacturing Company in Dayton, John ordered two, sight unseen. In six months they reduced his debt from $16,000 to $3,000 and the books showed a profit of $5,000. These modern machines had solved the old problems of disorganization and dishonesty. Patterson "was so impressed that he bought the company."
