Story Line
1898 might as well be called year one of the empire. It is the year where Americans acquired land away from their own continent. Since then, Americans have been divided between those who favor isolation from world affairs and those who advocate intervention. About the Book Goucher, John Franklin.
    Christianity and the United States.

Goucher's address, published when he had returned to Baltimore, was entitled simply "Christianity in the United States." In essence, it is a fifty-page essay covering four hundred years of American history that places Christianity ("not the Church") at the center of all developments for good, and at the heart of all bastions against evil. "Christianity," he writes, "accounts for the discovery and settlement of America, it determined our governmental organization, and has been the dominating influence in our national development." (p.9) Clearly, his truncated historical account must move quickly from the first explorations driven by religion, to the populating of the continent in its early day with men and women fleeing persecution for their faith. Quoting James Bryce and his well-known American Commonwealth , the Constitution, when it came, did not make an established church, however Christianity was still, though "not the legally established religion, yet the national religion." (Many of Goucher's points are illustrated with quotations from well-known sources.)

A Decisive Biography I have just translated this book into Japanese. It took me no less than 2 years. As is well known, the main achievement of John R. Mott is that he promoted the eccumenical movement and paved the road to WCC (World Christian Council). During my translation, I found the parts of World War I and the Russian revolution the most provocative. It cannot be said that this book is easy to read, partly because the author intended to make this book the decisive biography (a few had been written before), utilizing a great amount of material. However, this book is not only extremely valuable as a document of the Christian Ecumenism but we can get a new perspective of the history of USA and the world from the late 19th century till 1950s. Obituary provided by Frances L. Frasier:
James L. Clinkinbeard was born Nov. 10, 1819, in the state of Kentucky; removed to Missouri when 12 years old; crossed the plains to Oregon in 1846 and settled in the Willamette valley. He removed to Wilbur, Douglas county in 1862, was married to Mary Holman in 1849; was the father of thirteen children, ten of whom still survive. He joined the M. E. church at an early age but united with the Presbyterian church in 1882. Died Feb. 5, 1897, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. T. Woodruff, in Cleveland.
Thus another pioneer is gone to swell the throng that have passed on before. His death was very sudden; going to bed at night in usual health and was found dead in bed in the morning. Just 18 years previous to his event his wife was carried out by the tide into the ocean and drowned. Many persons are acquainted with the circumstances. Some of his daughters have been prominent school teachers in this and Coos county. They have the sympathy of the people in this community, and the consolation that he is resting in that blessed sleep from which none ever wake to weep.
