Mother Teresa's Crimes Against Humanity

by Danny Postel
An interview with Christopher Hitchens What exactly inspired you to write a book about Mother Teresa? So it began as an amicable encounter? I don’t know Calcutta terrifically well, but I know it quite well. And I would say that low on the list of the things that it needs is a Christian campaign against population control. And I speak as someone who’s personally very squeamish on the abortion question. People who campaign vigorously against contraception, I think, are in a very weak position to lay down the moral law on abortion. So I thought, okay, that’s interesting. And then I noticed something else which I guess I’d noticed already without realizing it. Calcutta has the reputation as being a complete hell hole thanks to Mother Teresa. You get the impression from her that it's a place where people are just about able to brush the flies from their children’s eyes, the begging bowl is fully out, that people are on their knees and crawling. Nothing could be further from the truth. Calcutta is one of the most vibrant and interesting cities in the world. It’s full of film schools, universities, bookstores and cafés. It has a tremendously vibrant political life. It’s the place that produced the films of Satyajit Ray. It’s a wonderful city. It's architecturally beautiful. And the people do not beg. They’re not abject. They’re very poor; some sleep on the street, but they’re usually working and hustling at something. They don’t grovel, as in some parts of India I must say they do.

The Dark Night of Mother Teresa
    Carol Zaleski
During November and December of last year, the ZENIT News Agency published in four installments a study of The Soul of Mother Teresa: Hidden Aspects of Her Interior Life
  • Her childhood and youth, when from the time of her First Communion at age five and a half she felt her heart captivated by the love of Jesus and of neighbor, and discovered her call to join the missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Loreto. While it was difficult to leave her family, she found her time as a Loreto nun, teaching in the convent school in Calcutta, immensely rewarding. She was by all accounts a happy though not particularly brilliant nun (she is remembered, among other things, for having fumbled the candles at Benediction). The keynote of this period is youthful zeal and joy.
  • corresponding trial of our contemporaries seems to be the feeling of not having any faith despise One can better understand, having read The Soul of Mother Teresa Tantum ergo Sacramentum , so faith must supply what is lacking to our feeble senses. Humanly, there were times when Mother Teresa felt burnt out, but faith supplied what was lacking even to troubled faith; spiritually she was often desolate, but her vow endured and her visible radiance—to which everyone attests—was undiminished. This lifelong fidelity should not be confused with a Stoic determination to keep going in the face of defeat. It was something else entirely: objective Christian joy. the warrior, the priest, the apostle, the doctor, the martyr

Mother Teresa of Calcutta "Yesterday is gone.  Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today.  Let us begin. "At the end of our lives, we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made or how many great things we have done. We will be judged by 'I was hungry and you gave me to eat. I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless and you took me in.' Hungry not only for bread-but hungry for love. Naked not only for clothing- but naked of human dignity and respect. Homeless not only for want of a room of bricks- but homeless because of rejection. This is Christ in distressing disguise." Mother Teresa "Keep close to Jesus, He loves you Let us pray God bless you." "Mother" Teresa (1910-1997)
    General Teachings/Activities
    - "Mother" Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu of Albanian parents in what is now Yugoslavia/Bosnia on August 27, 1910. She died of a heart attack on September 5, 1997. The diminutive nun arrived in India on January 6, 1929, where she started assisting the needy and eventually established the now-global "Missionaries of Charity" organization. Ultimately, more than 500 missions in 100 countries were established. Yet, "Mother" Teresa, and those who worked with her, never tried to convert to Christ the dying people for whom they cared. Instead, "Mother" Teresa declared: "If in coming face to face with God we accept Him in our lives, then we are converting. We become a better Hindu, a better Muslim, a better Catholic , a better whatever we are. ... What God is in your mind you must accept" (from Mother Teresa: Her People and Her Work , by Desmond Doig, p. 156). - How did "Mother" Teresa become such a great symbol of charity and saintliness? Her break into stardom came when Malcolm Muggeridge a very pious British political and social pundit adopted her for his pet cause. In 1969, he made a very famous film about her life and later a book called Something Beautiful for God . Both the book and the film deserve the label hagiography. So it wasn't the result of the propaganda of the "Holy Office," but when the Catholic church realized it had a winner on its hands, it was quick to adopt her. She was a very great favorite of the faithful and a very good advertisement to attract non-believers or non-Catholics. And she was very useful for the current pope as a weapon against reformists and challengers within the church. (Source: "An Interview with Christopher Hitchens on Mother Teresa," Fall 1996

    "Heaven has gained another Star!"
Beloved Mother Teresa left her physical body on September 5, 1997. Beloved Mary, the Mother of Jesus , announced on September 7, 1997 that this precious Daughter of God has Ascended and become One with Her beloved Mighty I AM Presence . Mother Mary said: " . . . I would likewise speak of another sadness, but of the greatest Joy. For in the loss of the beloved Mother Teresa, Heaven has gained another Star. In this day, beloved Teresa has gained Her Ascension in the Light, and will walk in the Octaves of Light to Radiate Her Greater Help and Guidance for those who would follow in a selfless Path of Service and Surrender. Beloved Teresa, with the Guidance of the Ascended Masters in Council, chose this very time and hour for Her Transition in the Light in the wake of the passing of a Princess . For it was Her desire that She not be a great focus of attention. She wished only for the Good which She had accomplished to continue on. For those Activities of Light that she had supported, had put Her Whole Momentum behind, to keep up the work, to not be swayed at Her passing, but to keep putting one foot in front of the other, in selfless Service and true Charity of the Heart. "She was not interested in being ever a center of attention - for Her focus was upon God. She wished the priorities of Life for each individual to be turned to their own God Reality and Opportunity in the Light. In all of Her Service to mankind, She continually turned toward God. She was not concerned with the comforts of the world, for She had chosen a Path of Complete Selfless Service.

Everybody remembers Mother Teresa as a living saint. Mother T was a Catholic nun who helped the destitute and homeless of Calcutta , and who became an international emissary of peace and charity after receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. But nobody seems to remember the crazy things M.T. said about abortion, contraception, and divorce. Or her endless self-aggrandizing through exaggeration and lies. Or the various brutal dictators and other sleazeballs she hung out with. Or especially what happened to all those financial donations (hundreds of millions of dollars) which never seemed to get spent on anything. At least they weren't spent on food, medicine, or housing for the poor. Mother Teresa was born in Macedonia in 1910. Her given name was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. As a girl she decided to become a missionary, and at age 18 left home to join a convent in Calcutta. She taught at St. Mary's High School until 1948, when she received permission to leave her order and embark on her life's mission of helping the poor. In 1950, she founded The Missionaries of Charity, a religious order dedicated to caring for the indigent residents of Calcutta. In time, the little charity blossomed into a reasonably well-funded endeavor. So far, so good. Then some guy from the BBC shows up in 1969 and points a movie camera at Mother T. The result is the documentary

    Defending Mother Teresa
They say that imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. But when it comes to writing anything controversial, your success can probably be judged by the caliber of your critics. So I'm flattered.
On January 17, 1998, Clark Morphew, syndicated columnist for Knight-Ridder , took aim at the winter issue of Free Inquiry because of two articles it contained that were highly critical of the late Mother Teresa. One was written by Susan Shields, a former Missionaries of Charity sister who worked with Teresa. Shields revealed that part of her job was to help keep track of the millions of dollars donated to Teresa's "charity" work. Unfortunately, most of that money sat unused in various bank accounts while the sisters had to beg for food from local merchants. If the locals couldn't help out, the soup kitchens did without. This is "charity?"
The other article was written by me. I compared the late Carl Sagan's genuine , almost immeasurable contributions to humanity with Teresa's contributions. Hers consisted of little more than telling people that suffering was good for them, and prattling on inanely about how God will provide, as starving children dropped like flies all around her. I also pointed to the brazen hypocrisy of Teresa's denying her "patients" the most rudimentary care, including simple comforts and pain killers, while she herself checked into posh hospitals to have a pacemaker implanted and blood vessels cleared.

Gregory Koukl What kind of God would allow a Hitler to go to heaven if he believed in Jesus and a Mother Teresa to go to hell if she didn't? "You're saying that Hitler and Mother Teresa would both suffer the same fate before God if they didn't believe in Jesus?" The words echoed over the radio airwaves as the host of "Religion on the Line" on ABC's L.A. affiliate station patiently waited for me to answer. I knew the question was coming, but I had no tidy theological retort that would put the ball back into his court. Someone once said that if you word the question right, you can win any debate. The question that evening was a classic case in point. The host might as well have asked, "Do you still beat your wife?" Simply answering "yes" or "no" wouldn't do. At the root of this discussion is the issue of Jesus as the only way to salvation. It is one of the biggest stumbling blocks of Christianity to those who are sincerely interested in leading moral lives and working hard to mitigate the impact of evil in the world. To make Jesus the sole issue of salvation seems to ignore the obvious difference between people of conscience and others who are entirely without scruples. Does that make sense? Radical Surgery Required Let me give an analogy that may add perspective. All things being equal, it's good to practice healthy living. People who eat their vegetables, get proper rest, exercise sensibly, and don't smoke or drink to excess, generally reap the benefits of longevity and vitality. Those who don't, get sick.
