A Love Like No Other: Mother Teresa
Mother Teresa, 1910-1997
"It is not enough for us to say: "I love God," but I also have to love my neighbor. St. John says that you are a liar if you say you love God and you don't love your neighbor. How can you love God whom you do not see, if you do not love your neighbor whom you see, whom you touch, with whom you live?"
-Mother Teresa
The most moving comments I have heard on what Mother Teresa has said is that she saw a form of Jesus in each human being, and administered to each person in this light...she did not see a human being who should be judgementally shunned because they are diseased, poor, gay, of a different race or religion, or even a murderershe saw a manifestation of Jesus in need of our love and assistance. If we learn nothing else from this saintly woman, I hope we learn and uphold this vision.
Our world is now missing a remarkable, holy manifestation of Christ, as we mourn the death and celebrate the life of Mother Theresa.

The pope beatifies Mother Teresa, a fanatic, a fundamentalist, and a fraud.

Mother Teresa: No saint I think it was Macaulay who said that the Roman Catholic Church deserved great credit for, and owed its longevity to, its ability to handle and contain fanaticism. This rather oblique compliment belongs to a more serious age. What is so striking about the "beatification" of the woman who styled herself "Mother" Teresa is the abject surrender, on the part of the church, to the forces of showbiz, superstition, and populism. It's the sheer tawdriness that strikes the eye first of all. It used to be that a person could not even be nominated for "beatification," the first step to "sainthood," until five years after his or her death. This was to guard against local or popular enthusiasm in the promotion of dubious characters. The pope nominated MT a year after her death in 1997. It also used to be that an apparatus of inquiry was set in train, including the scrutiny of an advocatus diaboli or "devil's advocate," to test any extraordinary claims. The pope has abolished this office and has created more instant saints than all his predecessors combined as far back as the 16

QUICKVOTE Do you believe in miracles?
Yes No VIEW RESULTS Steps to sainthood In the 10th century, Pope John XV developed an official canonisation procedure, which went through some revisions in the ensuing 1,000 years.
  • The process must begin five years after the candidates' death. (Pope John Paul II waived this requirement in Mother Teresa's case.)
  • Local bishops investigate the life of the candidate and the findings are sent to the Vatican.
  • After approval by a panel of theologians and cardinals, the pope proclaims the candidate is "venerable," meaning a role model of Roman Catholic virtues.
  • The next step is beatification if it is determined by the church that the candidate is responsible for a miracle after his or her death.

    Mother Teresa
, whose original name was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, was born on August 26, 1910 in what is now Skopje, Macedonia. She always wrote her birthday as the 27th of August because that was the day of her baptism, which was always more important to her than her birth. For her work with the poor around the world she received the Nobel Peace Prize In 1928 she joined a religious order and took the name Teresa. The order immediately sent her to India. A few years later, she began teaching in Calcutta, and in 1948 the Catholic Church granted her permission to leave her convent and work among the city's poor people. She became an Indian citizen that same year. In 1950, she founded a religious order in Calcutta called the Missionaries of Charity. The order provides food for the needy and operates hospitals, schools, orphanages, youth centers, and shelters for lepers and the dying poor. It now has branches in 50 Indian cities and 30 other countries. In addition to the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize, Mother Teresa has received other awards for her work with the needy. These awards include the 1971 Pope John XXIII Peace Prize and India's Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding in 1972. Mother Teresa died on September 5, 1997. She is sorely missed.

(CNN) Pope John Paul II presided Sunday over a momentous ceremony, placing Mother Teresa on the final step to sainthood, praising her life and telling a huge crowd at St. Peter's Square that "even in our days God inspires new models of sainthood." The beatification ceremony came days after the Pope celebrated his 25th anniversary as head of the Catholic Church. CNN anchor Heidi Collins spoke with Father Thomas Reese, editor of the Catholic weekly magazine, "America," about the legacy of the Pope and Mother Teresa, and their special relationship.

Mother Teresa of Calcutta “By blood, I am Albanian. By citizenship, an Indian. By faith, I am a Catholic nun. As to my calling, I belong to the world. As to my heart, I belong entirely to the Heart of Jesus. ” Small of stature, rocklike in faith, Mother Teresa of Calcutta was entrusted with the mission of proclaiming God’s thirsting love for humanity, especially for the poorest of the poor. “God still loves the world and He sends you and me to be His love and His compassion to the poor.” She was a soul filled with the light of Christ, on fire with love for Him and burning with one desire: “to quench His thirst for love and for souls.” This luminous messenger of God’s love was born on 26 August 1910 in Skopje, a city situated at the crossroads of Balkan history. The youngest of the children born to Nikola and Drane Bojaxhiu, she was baptised Gonxha Agnes, received her First Communion at the age of five and a half and was confirmed in November 1916. From the day of her First Holy Communion, a love for souls was within her. Her father’s sudden death when Gonxha was about eight years old left in the family in financial straits. Drane raised her children firmly and lovingly, greatly influencing her daughter’s character and vocation. Gonxha’s religious formation was further assisted by the vibrant Jesuit parish of the Sacred Heart in which she was much involved. At the age of eighteen, moved by a desire to become a missionary, Gonxha left her home in September 1928 to join the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary, known as the Sisters of Loreto, in Ireland. There she received the name Sister Mary Teresa after St. Thérèse of Lisieux. In December, she departed for India, arriving in Calcutta on 6 January 1929. After making her First Profession of Vows in May 1931, Sister Teresa was assigned to the Loreto Entally community in Calcutta and taught at St. Mary’s School for girls. On 24 May 1937, Sister Teresa made her Final Profession of Vows, becoming, as she said, the

    Mother Teresa sainthood considered
Mother Teresa died in 1997 VATICAN CITY The fight to make Mother Teresa of Calcutta a saint has been brought before the Vatican. Thirty-five thousand pages of documents attesting to the virtues and shortcomings of Mother Teresa have arrived in Monsignor Robert Sarno's office on Vatican square. In one of the most detailed cases of sainthood brought before the Vatican, Sarno, an official whose job it is to make saints, had to order the investigation to be closed because of the enormous amount of evidence in the case. Over 100 witness have testified about her life of charity far more than in most cases. Sarno, of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, told CNN: "With Mother Teresa as with any other cause, you are looking to see what God is saying to the church, what God is saying to the world through the individual ... through Mother Teresa." The Catholic church believes the lives of saints can set an example for believers, showing them how ordinary people do extraordinary things for their faith.

Doubts, exorcism shine spotlight on Mother Teresa
Mother Teresa's work on behalf of the poor earned her the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. From Satinder Bindra CNN New Delhi Bureau KOLKATA, India (CNN) Four years after her death, the world is discovering a new Mother Teresa one at times fraught with painful feelings of abandonment by God and once the subject of an exorcism, but all the more deserving of sainthood, church leaders say. This week, church officials offered fresh insights into Mother Teresa, the late Roman Catholic nun and Nobel Peace Prize winner known for her lifelong dedication to the poor. The archbishop of Kolkata, formerly known as Calcutta, confirmed this week that a priest performed an exorcism on the nun while she was in the hospital. Henry D'Souza said he ordered the act for fear "the mother, being so holy, could possibly be object of an attack by Satan." The church also released letters this week showing Mother Teresa's painful spiritual struggle during the 1950s and 1960s.

    Early life and work
Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Uskub , a town in the Ottoman province of Kosovo (now Skopje in the Republic of Macedonia ), where her father was a successful contractor . Her parents had three children, and Teresa was the youngest. It is usually stated that her parents, Nikolla and Dranafila Bojaxhiu, were Albanian , but it has been suggested that her father may have been of Vlach descent. Her parents were Catholic, though the majority of their native Albania is Muslim , with a large Orthodox Christian minority.
