VATICAN CITY (CNN) Hundreds of thousands crowded St. Peter's Square on Sunday, celebrating Pope John Paul II's beatification of Mother Teresa, known as the "Saint of the Gutters" for her work with the poor. "Brothers and sisters, even in our days God inspires new models of sainthood," John Paul told the crowd of about 300,000. "Some impose themselves for their radicalness, like that offered by Mother Teresa of Kolkata, whom today we add to the ranks of the blessed." "In her, we perceive the urgency to put oneself in a state of service, especially for the poorest and most forgotten, the last of the last," the 83-year old pontiff said in a slow and shaky voice.

Mother Teresa
by John A. Hardon, S.J.
It is an unexpected privilege to write to you on the occasion of Mother Teresa's entrance into eternity. More than twenty years ago, while teaching in New York City, Mother Teresa invited me to speak with her about the new branch of the Missionaries of Our conversation lasted five hours. Since then, I have come to know Mother very well. Teaching her Sisters over these years, throughout the world, has enabled me to know their foundress extraordinarily well. I sincerely consider my friendship with her to be one of the great blessings of my priesthood. My plan here is to share with you something of what I have learned about Mother Teresa on three aspects of her extraordinary life: Mother Teresa, the person, as I have come to know her through years of personal experience; Mother Teresa, the religious, as reflected in the Missionaries of Charity, whom she founded; and, Mother Teresa, the channel of grace, as seen in the transformation of souls that she and her Sisters have been able to accomplish since 1950, when they were first established in Calcutta as an institute of consecrated life. Mother Teresa, the Person

The Bengali chauvinist in me got a thrill: "This is Peter Jennings, tonight live from Calcutta." For the first and only time in my life, the great city I was born and raised in hit the big time. Bengalis love to celebrate their language, their culture, their politics, their fierce attachment to a city that has been famously "dying" for more than a century. They resent with equal ferocity the reflex stereotyping that labels any civic dysfunction anywhere in the world "another Calcutta." And why were the American media in Calcutta? Welcome to Mother Teresa's Site, A tribute to Mother Teresa, her life and the legacy she left behind. W e all have our own heroes, people we admire and respect, people who made an impact on our life, that made us look at the world with a different eye, Mother Teresa is definitely the one for me. Although the world is full of good people, great humanitarians that really care, people who donate billions of dollars, people who raise their voice to make a difference, Mother Teresa stands out in the crowd, she is unique. "It is not how much we do, but how much love we put in the doing.
It is not how much we give, but how much love we put in the giving." She dedicated every day of her adult life caring for "The dying, the cripple, the mentally ill, the unwanted, the unloved" and she loved every minute of it because she was loving, she was cleaning, feeding "Jesus in disguise". Yes, she fed them, sheltered them, cleaned their wounds, but what is more important she made them feel good, loved, wanted, she gave them back their dignity that poverty had taken away from them and even if they died they died with a smile on their face....somebody loves them, somebody cares for them .... "Speak tenderly to them. Let there be kindness in your face, in your eyes, in your smile, in the warmth of your greeting.

NAMASKAR! NAMASTE! WELCOME! to our visitors. Gandhi wrote: "The methods of conversion must be like Caesar's wife above suspicion. Faith is not imparted like secular subjects. Faith is given through the language of the heart. If a man has a living faith in him, it spreads its aroma like the rose its scent. Because of its invisibility, the extent of its influence is far wider than that of the visible beauty of the colour of its petals."
A Poem by Edgar Guest says:
I'd rather SEE a sermon
than hear one any day.
~ Mother Teresa of Calcutta ~ [Dear visitor, what about Mother Teresa's faith? Isn't it much like the rose that Gandhiji invoked? Isn't there something splendidly aromatic or all-embracing about Mother's life of service in India, an ancient land in certain respects almost quintessentially anti-Christian or anti-western. Yet this little lady has lit a candle that truly lights the world, attracting the admiration of millions, and the accolades of kings and presidents, prime ministers and Hollywood stars, unequivocal papal endorsement, the Nobel Prize and yes, the special blessing of Princess Diana, very nearly a "saint" in her own right. ]
The Path of Love
Spread love everywhere you go: first of all in your own house. Give love to your children, to your wife or husband, to a next door neighbor....Let no one come to you without leaving better or happier. Be the living expression of God's kindness; kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile and kindness in your warm greeting.

Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Dear Friend of Saint Joseph Abbey, D ecember 1964. Pope Paul VI is in Bombay to preside at the International Eucharistic Congress. Several million people are crowded all along the twenty kilometer route between the airport and the city. All wish to see and hear "the world's greatest religious leader." Mother Teresa of Calcutta is among those invited to the Congress. But on the way to the palace, she has come across a man and his wife, exhausted, with bloody faces, so thin that there is but skin over their bones. Mother Teresa approaches, tries to help. The man has just the time to pronounce a few words before expiring. Without hesitation, Mother Teresa loads the woman over her shoulders and carries her to the Home for the Dying. This exhausted woman represents Jesus and she must be assisted before all else, even if it means missing such a precious encounter with the Vicar of Christ. As long as you did it to one of these my least brethren, you did it to Me, Jesus will say at the Last Judgment ( Mt "To help all men" Gonxha (Agnes) Bojaxhiu, the future Mother Teresa, was born on August 26, 1910 in Skopje (ex-Yugoslavia). Her family, of Albanian nationality, was deeply Catholic. Around 1928, a special grace received from the Most Blessed Virgin, led Gonxha to the religious life. She was received by the Sisters of Our Lady of Loretto in Dublin, Ireland, whose Rule takes inspiration from the spirituality of the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. Gonxha meditated on the meaning of life: "Man is created to praise, reverence and serve God Our Lord, and by this means to save his soul" (
