Dezember 1945 in Pasadena (Kalifornien) Thomas Hunt Morgan studierte an der John Hapkins University und promovierte 1890 in Biologie und Embryologie. Nach seinem Abschluß reiste Morgan nach Neapel, wo er sich an der zoologischen Station fortbildete und H. Driesch und A. Dohrn kennenlernte, welche ihn u. a. in der Methode des Experimentierens beeinflußten. Zurück in Amerika dozierte Morgan von 1904 bis 1928 als Professor für experimentelle Zoologie an der Universität von Kalifornien. 1909 begann er seine Studien mit Drosophila, wobei er anhand experimenteller Evolutionsforschung versuchte, Makromutationen zu finden. Erste Erfolge in seinen Versuchen erzielte er um 1910 mit der Entdeckung geschlechtsgekoppelter Vererbung, die er 1915 erstmals publizierte. Ab 1928 wurde Morgan Direktor des Labors für biologische Wissenschaften am California Institute of Technology. Für seine Entdeckungen erhielt er 1933 den Nobelpreis für Physiologie und Medizin. Bis zu seinem Tode blieb Morgan am kalifornischen Institut und führte seine Drosophila - Forschung weiter.

Thomas Hunt Morgan was one of the first true geneticists. He and his "Fly group" made tremendous contributions to our understanding of the role of chromosomes and genes in inheritance. THOMAS HUNT MORGAN (1866-1945) Thomas Hunt Morgan was born in Lexington, Kentucky. As a young boy, Morgan loved exploring the countryside collecting samples of wild life and fossils. At the State University of Kentucky , Morgan's course load was heavy in the natural sciences. In 1886, after graduating from State, he went to Johns Hopkins University , a relatively new school at the time, to do graduate work in zoology. His doctoral dissertation was a thorough and well-respected investigation of the embryology of sea spiders. From 1891-1904, Morgan was a professor at Bryn Mawr College where he taught biology and other natural science subjects. He continued his own research, and published books and papers on embryology and zoology. In 1904, he was asked by his good friend, Edmund Wilson, to join the staff at Columbia University as Professor of Experimental Zoology. Morgan accepted, and so began the

The Path to the Chromosome Theory of Heredity The notion of the chromosome theory of heredity is very important to the understanding of evolution and genetics. There were many ideas, some correct and others not, which influenced the revolutionary discovery of chromosomal heredity. The main stones in the path to the chromosomal theory are the pangenesis hypothesis, the germ-plasm theory, and Mendel’s Laws. Pangenesis Lamarck expressed the idea that by simply using or not using certain organs they may be developed or atrophied and their offspring can then inherit these acquired characteristics. (Milner p. 375, 1993) It should be noted that this theory was not widely accepted largely due to the fact that the French word that Lamarck used in the sense of “must” was translated as “wants to,” which makes it sound as though the organism decides to change its body. Winston Coleman, Jr., Collection, Transylvania University Special Collections In 1955, the Foundation for the Preservation of Historic Lexington and Fayette County was formed to save the Hunt-Morgan House and the neighboring Col. Thomas Hart House, which was demolished for a parking lot that year. The Hunt-Morgan House was saved and the name of the Foundation was changed to the Blue Grass Trust for Historic Preservation. The organization restored the home to its 1814 appearance and the house is now an interpretive museum illustrating the lifestyle and culture of early 19th-century Kentucky affluence. The home is also the site of the Alexander T. Hunt Civil War Museum, which contains many Civil War artifacts and is a great resource for Civil War researchers and enthusiasts. The Hunt-Morgan House is located in the Gratz Park Historic District at 201 N. Mill St. The house and Alexander T. Hunt Civil War Museum are open to the public, with a small admission fee, from the first of March through mid-December. Tours are offered every quarter hour from 10:15am to 3:15pm Tuesday-Saturday and from 2:15pm to 4:15pm on Sundays.
