Allsport In the summer of 1970, Bob Murphy, Stanford's sports publicity chief, felt compelled to issue an unusual release. "Gentlemen of the Press," it read. "My title is Sports Information Director, not Campaign Manager! This is by way of saying that our great quarterback Jim Plunkett will win his awards on the field, and not in the publicity office." The Heisman Trophy campaign had started to resemble a national election. As a glut of talented passers including Plunkett, Notre Dame's Joe Theismann, Mississippi's Archie Manning and Kansas State's Lynn Dickey vied for college football's most cherished prize, SIDs courted votes with elaborate public relations schemes. (The Mississippi precinct was well covered with Archie dolls and bumper stickers.) But with a candidate like Plunkett, it was easy for Murphy to stay above the fray. Plunkett's numbers spoke volumes: He led Stanford to an 8-3 regular-season record, threw for 18 touchdowns and ran for three others, amassing 2,898 yards total offense in the process, and 7,887 in three years, then an NCAA standard. His strength was legendary, and he had the finesse to go with it.

He is a versatile player who shows solid hands and strength during blocking. Moore is not a great runner with limited speed, and needs to finish blocks better. Moore fits the need for depth at fullback and he should find a place in short yardage situations if he shows something during training camp.

Aggie All-Sun; Stanford escapes THE ASSOCIATED PRESS New Mexico State senior men's basketball player James Moore, the school's all-time leading shot blocker, was named to the All-Sun Belt Conference first team. It's the second straight year Moore earned a spot on the all-conference first team. As a junior in 2002-03, Moore, a 6-foot-8 forward, was the conference's Player of The Year. Moore had 200 blocks during his career at NMSU. This season he blocked 54 shots and averaged 15.4 points a game. As a scorer, Moore never shot below 53 percent from the field and scored in double figures 88 times. He scored over 20 points in a game 25 times. "If you look at what he has done this season and through the years, you can see that this is a justified honor," said NMSU coach Lou Henson. "He is a tremendous talent and one of the most skilled players I have ever coached." Moore was the only Aggie player named to the all-conference first and second teams.

This exploratory program is complemented by target-specific syntheses. In this regard, selected natural products that are structurally amenable to function as bioreductive alkylating agents, and thus potential anticancer agents, are of particular interest. In addition, we are interested in the design and synthesis of non-natural products that will selectively cleave DNA but only subsequent to an activating chemical step. Problems of current interest are the following: (1) synthesis and chemistry of un usual ketenes, e.g.

A technology that could circumvent an approaching bar to Moore's Law will be jointly investigated by IBM and Stanford University IBM and Stanford University on Monday will announce a joint effort to conduct further research into spintronics, which is a technology that one day could lead to computers that could start working as soon as the power comes on or rapid fire digital cameras. The project, called the Spintronics Science and Application Centre, was announced late Sunday in The New York Times . It will be based out of IBM's Almaden Research facility in San Jose, California, and the nearby Palo Alto, California, campus of Stanford University. Spintronics revolves around precisely controlling the magnetic field emanating from a thin film. Magnetic fields create electrical resistance, and high and low levels of resistance can be assigned a one or zero designation. By controlling the magnetic field and interpreting the resistance levels at various points on the film, digital data is created. The name derives from the fact that the electrons are said to spin in parallel, or in different directions. It is, however, a metaphor.

GERANIOS / Associated Press "I knew time was low," said Lottich, who led the Cardinal with 15 points. "I've done it before." But rarely with so much on the line. The improbable shot gave Stanford its 26th consecutive win and squashed Washington State's hopes of toppling a No. 1 team for the first time in 24 tries. "We, obviously, were very lucky at the end," Cardinal coach Mike Montgomery said. "I don't know how many times Matt Lottich has made those." Stanford (26-0, 17-0 Pac-10) must defeat Washington on Saturday in Seattle to complete the first 18-0 season in Pac-10 history. "It'll be an NCAA-level game," Montgomery said. "We've got a one-game season for a perfect season." No. 2 Saint Joseph's (27-0) also is trying to finish unbeaten. The Hawks' next game comes in the Atlantic 10 tournament, which starts March 10. In the only other game Thursday involving a ranked team, No. 13 Cincinnati was upset by DePaul 68-65.

Hooking up for health: Stanford van brings medicine and compassion to homeless or uninsured young people San Francisco Chronicle - Friday, May 24, 2002
Michael Pena, Chronicle Staff Writer Marlon Moore has no family doctor. No HMO. No health insurance. But he does have the access to a weekly checkup. Moore, 19, his head wrapped in a blue 'do rag, his dark jeans tumbling over his sneakers, fit right in as he strolled up Ellis Street toward the Tenderloin Recreation Center. He was with a friend, who pointed to the long, white trailer parked in front of the center. They wandered over, and after his friend went in and finished his business, Moore, a Larkin Youth Center resident, slipped in. The blinds in the 36-foot recreational vehicle remained drawn, so what happened next went unseen to anyone outside. But it involved someone inserting a needle in Moore's arm and a serious talk about his nagging urge to smoke a pack a day. A constant flow of wayward youth, or some just going through hard times, visit the RV every week looking for a hook up. But in this case, it's a health hook up: a chance to get tested for sexually transmitted diseases and some advice on quitting cigarettes.

SportsLine.com wire reports STANFORD, Calif. J.R. Lemon pounded his way to a career-high 151 yards on 34 carries and scored two touchdowns, and Stanford recorded a season high in points to defeat Arizona State 38-27 on Saturday. Chris Lewis ran for a score and passed for two more as just about everything went right again for the Cardinal (4-4, 2-4 Pac-10) a week after their 21-14 upset of UCLA. Lewis went 18-of-34 for 279 yards as Stanford compiled 474 yards of offense, despite playing through a steady rain in the second half. If the past two games are any indication, the Cardinal seem to be finding some consistency that coach Buddy Teevens has been striving for all season. Lemon came up big in place of leading rusher Kenneth Tolon, who hurt his thumb in a warmup drill before the game and played only the first snap. Lemon's totals were the most for a Stanford running back since 1997. His previous best was 103 yards in a 31-10 win against San Jose State in the season opener Sept. 6. Evan Moore caught a 33-yard touchdown pass from Lewis on the first play of the fourth quarter, then was down for several minutes before being helped off the field by several members of the training staff and carted away with an apparent left ankle injury. Moore is also planning to play power forward on the Stanford basketball team.

1. Life and Career
Moore's Fellowship ended in 1904; after a spell away from Cambridge, Moore returned there in 1911 to a lectureship in the University and he then lived there for the rest of his life (apart from an extended visit to the U.S.A. in 1940-44). In 1921 he became editor of Mind , the leading British philosophical journal, and in 1925 he became a Professor at Cambridge. These two appointments confirmed his position as the most highly respected British philosopher of the time, and with Wittgenstein back in Cambridge after 1929, Cambridge became the most important centre of philosophy in the world. Moore retired as Professor in 1939 (to be succeeded by Wittgenstein) and as editor of Mind in 1944; these retirements marked not only the end of his pre-eminence, but also of the golden age of Cambridge philosophy.
