Portuguese surgeon, neurologist and statesman, born November 29, 1874 Avança, Portugal; died December 13, 1955, Lisboa.

Biography: "It's better with a bottle in front of you than a frontal lobotomy". Joseph Wanburgh. Egas Moniz, considered the father of modern psycho-surgery, is chiefly remembered as the originator of lobotomy. In 1949 he shared the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Walter Rudolf Hess, Switzerland (1881-1973). Hess (Zurich University) won the prize "for his discovery of the functional organization of the interbrain as a coordinator of the activities of the internal organs".

egas moniz Biography. ( antonio caetano de abreu freire) egas moniz was born in Avanca, Portugal, on November 29, 1874, the son of Fernando de Pina Rezende abreu and Maria do Rosario de Almeida e Sousa.

(Antonio Caetano de Abreu Freire) Egas Moniz Coimbra University . He received further education at Bordeaux and Paris and became Professor at Coimbra in 1902. In 1911 he transferred to the new Chair in Neurology at Lisbon where he remained until his death. He also worked for a time as a physician in the Hospital of Santa Maria, Lisbon.
Moniz entered politics in 1903 and served as a Deputy in the Portugese Parliament until 1917 when he became Portuguese Ambassador to Spain. Later in 1917 he was appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs and he was President of the Portuguese Delegation at the Paris Peace Conference in 1918.
Moniz discovered cerebral angiography and prefrontal leucotomy and the extent of his work is perhaps best indicated by listing his more important publications:

Moniz, Egas [Antonio Caetano de Abreu Freire] (Avanca, Portugal, 1874-Lisboa, 1955) Médico portugués. Estudió en la Universidad de Coimbra y en 1911 obtuvo la primera cátedra de neurología en la de Lisboa. Paralelamente inició una carrera política, llegando a ser diputado de la República portuguesa, embajador de Portugal en Madrid en 1917 y presidente de la delegación lusa que asistió a la conferencia de la paz en Versalles. En 1921 volvió a dedicarse por completo a la medicina, y en 1927 estableció la técnica diagnóstica de la angiografía cerebral para la detección de tumores. También realizó las primeras arteriografías e introdujo la leucotomía prefrontal en el tratamiento de algunas enfermedades mentales. En 1949 le fue otorgado el Premio Nobel de Medicina.
