Sherwood Rowland The ozone layer - the Achilles heel of the biosphere The atmosphere surrounding the earth contains small quantities of ozone - a gas with molecules consisting of three oxygen atoms (O ). If all the ozone in the atmosphere were compressed to a pressure corresponding to that at the earth's surface, the layer would be only 3 mm thick. But even though ozone occurs in such small quantities, it plays an exceptionally fundamental part in life on earth. This is because ozone, together with ordinary molecular oxygen (O ), is able to absorb the major part of the sun's ultra-violet radiation and therefore prevent this dangerous radiation from reaching the surface. Without a protective ozone layer in the atmosphere, animals and plants could not exist, at least upon land. It is therefore of the greatest importance to understand the processes that regulate the atmosphere's ozone content.

Es un escudo protector bastante frágil: en la última década ha quedado perfectamente claro que puede verse afectada por actividades humanas. El ozono se encuentra presente en la atmósfera en pequeñas cantidades. Como promedio en el globo hay escasamente una molécula de ozono por cada 30 millones de moléculas de aire. Sin embargo, casi el 90 por ciento del ozono reside en la estratosfera, donde las concentraciones locales alcanzan niveles 300 veces mayores que el promedio mundial. El ozono es una especie química bastante inestable: está en formación continua por la acción de la radiación solar sobre las moléculas normales de oxígeno y está siendo destruido por una gama de procesos químicos. Molina will share this year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work in atmospheric chemistry concerning the formation and decomposition of ozone. The Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm, Sweden awarded the million-dollar prize on Wednesday morning to Molina, F. Sherwood Rowland of the University of California at Irvine, and Paul Crutzen, a scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz, Germany. Ordinary activities deplete ozone Molina, Rowland, and Crutzen showed that the use of common items like spray cans and air conditioners can harm the fragile ozone layer that protects the world from the dangerous ultra-violet radiation of the sun. This is the first time that the Swedish Academy has awarded a Nobel Prize for research into the impact of man-made objects on the environment. The discoveries led to an international environmental treaty, which, by the end of this year, bans the production of industrial chemicals that reduce the ozone layer. "It's very rewarding to see how one can simultaneously try to work with problems that affect society in a very direct way," Molina said.

Nobelist to discuss ozone depletion at colloquium today Mario Molina, one of three atmospheric chemists to share the 1995 Nobel Prize, will deliver a chemistry colloquium on campus on April 4 at 4:40 p.m. in Room 200 Baker Lab. His lecture, "The Chemistry of Polar Ozone Depletion," is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Chemistry Department. Molina, professor of chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, shared the Nobel Prize with Paul Crutzen of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry and F. Sherwood Rowland of the University of California at Irvine for their pioneering work over more than two decades on the atmospheric effects of the chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which they showed to be responsible for the depeletion of stratospheric ozone. In 1974, Molina, then a postdoctoral fellow with Rowland at California, first described how chemically inert CFCs are wafted into the stratosphere where they are broken up by ultraviolet (UV) radiation in a process called photodissociation. Molina and Rowland closely calculated the mean atmospheric lifetimes of typical CFCs and deduced the catalytic role of the released chlorine atoms in the destruction of ozone molecules. In addition, Molina's investigations clearly outlined the threats posed by continuing use and production of industrial CFCs common in refrigerants and aerosol propellants threats which included a projected ozone depletion of 7 percent to 13 percent at the 1974 rate of production, accompanied by an increase in UV radiation. Use of CFCs as propellants was banned in the United States in 1978, and the three chemists were awarded the Nobel Prize on the eve of the 1996 ban of all ozone-depleting chemicals as mandated in the 1987 Montreal Protocol.

Durante ese permiso, el 5 de junio de 1976 a las ocho de la noche, la vivienda familiar fue allanada por personal del Ejército perteneciente al Grupo de Artillería de Defensa Aérea 60 1, unidad al mando del coronel Alberto Pedro BARDA. Los del grupo operativo dijeron buscar al soldado THomAs y, al no encontrarlo, se retiraron (Alfredo Mario regresó tres horas después). Se presentó personal del Comando Radioeléctrico de la Policía de Buenos Aires para entregarle al soldado una orden de presentación en el Grupo de Artillería de Defensa Aérea 601 firmada por su jefe, el coronel BARDA.
