Cesar Milstein Born in Bahia Bianca, Argentina, Milstein is an immunologist. They are called "monoclonal antibodies," and Milstein's pioneering discovery of how to form them made him co-winner of a 1984 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. He had merged cells that produce natural antibodies with those of a tumor that multiplies indefinitely. The result: a new combined cell that generates a specific anti-body in quantity - to target single disease organisms invading the body, unlike the generalized attack of most antibodies. The landmark development in 1975 came from a gifted researcher whose model was Louis Pasteur. His Ph.D. was earned at England's University of Cambridge following studies at the University of Buenos Aires. Cesar Milstein Cesar Milstein Argentine immunologist who in 1984, with Georges Kohler and Niels K. Jerne, received the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his work in the development of monoclonal antibodies. Milstein attended the universities of Buenos Aires and Cambridge (Ph.D., 1960) and was on the staff of the National Institute of Microbiology in Buenos Aires (1957-63). Thereafter he was a member of the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, Eng., and held dual Argentine and British citizenship. Milstein and Kohler, who was at Cambridge on a fellowship, made their discovery of the technique for producing monoclonal antibodies in 1975. It involved the fusion of short-lived, highly specific lymphocytes (antibody-producing cells) with the cells of a myeloma, a type of tumour that can be made to reproduce indefinitely. The resulting hybrid cells retained the two desired properties: like the lymphocytes, they secreted a single species of antibody molecules, and, like myeloma cells, they perpetuated themselves, providing potentially unlimited amounts of any desired antibody. This technique enabled the production of large quantities of pure, uniform antibodies that are able to recognize single antigenic determinants (i.e., a single characteristic of a particular microbial invader in the body). Junto a G. Köhler desarrolló una técnica para crear anticuerpos con idéntica estructura química, que denominó anticuerpos monoclonales.

En 1984 obtuvo el Premio Nobel de Medicina y Farmacología por sus trabajos para perfeccionar el sistema de defensa inmunológica con el que naturalmente cuentan los seres humanos. Cesar Milstein nació en Bahía Blanca (Buenos Aires), el 8 de octubre de 1927, donde permaneció hasta 1945, cuando se trasladó a la Capital Federal para estudiar en la Universidad de Buenos Aires y cuatro años más tarde, en 1956, recibir su doctorado en Química y un premio especial por parte de la Sociedad Bioquímica Argentina. En 1957 se presentó y fue seleccionado por concurso para desempeñarse como investigador en el Instituto Nacional de Microbiología Carlos Malbrán, que atravesaba por entonces una época de esplendor de la mano de su director, Ignacio Pirosky. Al poco tiempo de haber ingresado a dicho Instituto, Milstein partió rumbo a Cambridge, Inglaterra, beneficiado por una beca. El lugar elegido era nada menos que el Medical Center Research, uno de los centros científicos mundialmente reconocidos por su excelencia, y donde trabajaba Frederick Sanger - Premio Nobel de física catorce años más tarde-, que fue su director de investigaciones. Una vez concluida la beca, las autoridades de aquel centro de investigaciones solicitaron a Buenos Aires una prórroga por dos años más, que fue aceptada de inmediato por las autoridades del Malbrán.

He returned to Argentina for two years during which he extended his studies of mechanisms of enzyme action to the enzymes phosphoglyceromutase and alkaline phosphatase. However, the political persecution of liberal intellectuals and scientists manifested itself as a vendetta against the director of the institute where he was working, forcing him to resign and return to Cambridge and rejoin Sanger who was now Head of the Division of Protein Chemistry in the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology.
