Robert Millikan var en mycket framstående experimentell fysiker. Med hans arbeten under början av 1900-talet har han bland annat bestämt laddningen på en elektron och fastslagit Einsteins teori om fotoelektriska effekten. Det var för just dessa båda verk som Millikan 1923 fick Nobelpriset i fysik. I hans arbete med fotoelektriska effekten lyckades Millikan samtidigt få fram ett mycket noggrannt värde på Plancks konstant. Exaktheten i Millikans resultat var en storhet hos honom. Särskilt bestämningen av elektronens laddning var oerhört exakt för Millikans tid. Dåtida och även nutida fysiker har dock beskyllt honom för att på ett eller annat sätt ha manipulerat med mätresultaten. Även om det kan finnas fog för kritiken har det visat sig att Millikans resultat är inom den marginal han själv angivit. En förklaring till Millikans noggranna resultat är hans speciella personlighet. Med sin otroliga envishet vägrade han ge sig förrän han hade uppnått sitt mål. Han vägrade tro på Einsteins fotoelektriska teori och jobbade därför i flera år med att utveckla ett exakt experiment. Förutom envisheten sägs Millikan ha varit svår att sammarbeta med. Han har också anklagats för att tryckt ner elever på universitetet där han verkade. Även om Millikans aggerande kan ifrågasättas så var hans upptäckter och resultat mycket viktiga. Till hans minne finns bland annat ett bibliotek uppkallat efter honom på Caltech i California. Det var också tack vare Millikan som Einstein fick Nobelpriset. Kanske kan det tyckas snopet att Millikans tioåriga arbete med att motbevisa Einstein ledde till att denne fick Nobelpriset.

First, when an object was placed between the cathode and anode, the object created a shadow on the glass. Second, when they placed a paddle wheel in the cathode ray, the wheel would turn away from the cathode and toward the anode, showing that the cathode-ray had a mass able to move the wheel. More experiments showed that the cathode-ray deflected away from negative charges. From this one can conclude that the cathode-ray is negatively charged Joseph John Thompson Through a number of experiments in 1897, Joseph John Thomson was able to measure the constant ratio of the charge of the cathode-ray particles to their mass. No matter what metal or gases he used in the experiment, the ratio remained the same. From this, he concluded that the negative particles that composed the cathode-ray were all identical. He named this group of identical negative particles, electrons. Robert A Millikan Robert A Millikan followed up with a number of experiments to determine the mass of the electron. In 1909, was able to measure the mass as 1/1837 of the mass of a hydrogen atom, that is (9.0109*10^-31)kg. These experiments led to conclusions that electrons were indeed negatively charges and were present in atoms of all the different elements.
