Throughout his life Millikan remained a prolific author, making numerous contributions to scientific journals. He was not only a foremost scientist, but his religious and philosophic nature was evident from his lectures on the reconciliation of science and religion, and from his books: Science and Life(1924); Evolution in Science and Religion (1927); Science and the New Civilization (1930); Time, Matter, and Values (1932). Shortly before his death he published Electrons (+ and –), Protons, Photons, Neutrons, Mesotrons, and Cosmic Rays (1947; another rev. ed. of The Electron, previously mentioned,) and his Autobiography(1950).
Millikan was an enthusiastic tennis player, and golf was also one of his recreations. Professor Millikan married Greta Erwin Blanchard in 1902; they had three sons: Clark Blanchard, Glenn Allen, and Max Franklin. He died on the 19th of December, 1953, in San Marino, California.

Robert Andrews Millikan March 22 December 19 ) was an American physicist who won the Nobel Prize for Physics primarily for his work in determining the value of the charge on the electron and for the photoelectric effect . He later worked on cosmic rays He received a Bachelor's degree , in classics , from Oberlin College in , and his PhD , in physics , from Columbia University in Millikan explained his transition from classics to physics , told in his own autobiography:
At the close of my sophomore year my Greek professor I doubt if I have ever taught better in my life than in my first course in physics in 1889. I was so intensely interested in keeping my knowledge ahead of that of the class that they may have caught some of my own interest and enthusiasm.
In he published the first results of his oil-drop experiment to measure the charge on a single electron (since repeated, with degrees of success, by generations of physics students). The, so-called, elementary charge is one of the fundamental physical constants and accurate knowledge of its value is of great importance. His experiment measured the force on tiny charged droplets of oil suspended against gravity between two metal electrodes. Knowing the electric field, the charge on the droplet could be determined. Repeating the experiment for many droplets, Millikan showed that the results could be explained as

Morrison (1868-1953), an American physicist, determined through an oil-drop experiment the value of the charge on an electron and demonstrated that the charge was a discrete constant rather than a statistical average. For this work, as well as for his work on the photoelectric effect, he received the Nobel Prize for physics in 1923.

Carl Sagan's COSMOS is one of the most influential science programs ever made. Q. Does the moon have a dark side? A. The moon does have a far side which is impossible to see from the earth, but it doesn't mean that it's always dark. Each side of the moon is dark for no longer than 15 days at a time. Q. Where does sound come from? A. The air is always filled with sound waves. All things give off vibrations, but some have a low frequency which most cannot hear. The reason: it may take 3 minutes to make a single vibration. They may be caused by earthquakes and storms. Did You Know?

Millikan, Robert Andrews (1868-1953).

Millikan, Robert Andrews (Morrison, Estados Unidos, 1868-San Marino, id., 1953) Físico norteamericano. Inicio Buscador Recomendar sitio

Knowing the electric field the charge on the droplet could be determined. Repeating the experiment for many droplets, this was found always to be one or a few units of a common value. This was taken to be the charge on a single electron. There is now controversy over Millikan's experimental methods and reporting of his results. A version of the oil drop experment has subsequently been used to search for free quarks (which would have a charge of 1/3 e ), without success.
