Albert Abraham Michelson was born in Strelno, Prussia, on December 19, 1852. Two years later his family emigrated to the United States to settle at Virginia City, Nevada, but they eventually moved to San Francisco where Michelson received his early education in public schools, matriculating from the High School in 1869. He was appointed by President Grant to the U.S. Naval Academy and, after graduation as Ensign in 1873 and a two-years' cruise in the West Indies, he became an instructor in physics and chemistry at the Academy under Admiral Sampson. In 1879, he was posted to the Nautical Almanac Office, Washington, to work with Simon Newcomb, but in the following year, he obtained leave of absence to continue his studies in Europe. He visited the Universities of Berlin and Heidelberg Clark University, Worcester, Massachusetts , and in 1892 he became Professor of Physics and the first Head of Department at the new University of Chicago . He rejoined the Navy during World War I, and in 1918 returned to Chicago where in 1925 he was appointed to the first of the Distinguished Service Professorships. Michelson resigned in 1929 to work at the Mount Wilson Observatory , Pasadena.

After that Michelson was married to Edna Stanton. They had three children also: Beatice, Madeline and Dorothy.
Find more in Michelson's Genealogy Homepage A.A.Michelson was a Mason. In 1878 Michelson began work on what was to be the passion of his life, the accurate measurement of the speed of light. He was able to get useful values with homemade apparatus. Feeling the need to study optics before he could be qualified to make real progress, he travelled to Europe in 1880 and spent two years in Berlin, Heidelberg, and Paris, resigning from the navy in 1881. Upon his return to the United States, he determined the velocity of light to be 299,853 km s , a value that remained the best for a generation. When it was bettered, Michelson bettered it. Albert Michelson, the first chair of Physics Department at Clark University at Worcester, was the first to accurately measure the speed of light. Albert A. Michelson was the first Nobel laureate of the University of Chicago for his measurements of the speed of light. It was at Clark University that Michelson conducted fundamental research leading to the determination of an international standard of measurement, the meter, in terms of a natural constant, the wave length of cadmium light. His numerous contributions to the physics of light included the invention of optical precision instruments, many of which he used in experiments that marked the beginning of modern physics.

Born in Strelno, Prussia (later Strzelno, Poland), son of a Jewish merchant, Michelson was brought to America as a small child. He grew up in the rough, booming mining towns of Murphy's Camp, California and Virginia City, Nevada. In 1869 he went to Annapolis as an appointee of President U. S. Grant. After graduation he stayed on at the Naval Academy as a science instructor.
A single event in November 1877 stamped a pattern on his life. While preparing a lecture demonstration of Foucault's method for determining the velocity of light, Michelson realized that if he collimated the beam he could get a much longer optical path-length and thus a great increase in sensitivity. In the next two years he did the experiment, aided by his enthusiasm and mechanical talent, and also by a grant from his father-in-law, amounting to $2000 (the equivalent of ten times as much today). Encouraged by success and by the advice of the prominent astronomer Simon Newcomb, Michelson resolved on a career in physics. He went to Europe for two years of study.

Michelson, Albert Abraham (1852-1931)

German-American physicist who devise the Michelson interferometer to detect the motion of the earth through the ether. He performed numerous trials with Edward Morley of this classic investigation which was come to be known as the Michelson-Morley experiment. No matter how the device was oriented, where it was placed, or when it was used, a null result was obtained. In 1890, he developed a theory for interferometric observations of single and double stars. He suggested that a telescope's resolving power could be increased using external mirrors in an arrangement he called a stellar refractometer. He made trial observations with the 15" Harvard College Observatory which failed. However, he successfully measured the diameters of the Galilean satellites using the Lick 12". He then added a steel beam across the telescope's front on which four small relay mirrors were placed, creating the device known as a Michelson stellar interferometer. He measured seven stars with the 100" Hooker Telescope, although one was later withdrawn Oct. 1991). Michelson is quoted as quipping "the grand underlying principles have been firmly established...further truths of physics are to be looked for in the sixth place of decimals"

Michelson, Albert Abraham German-born US physicist. With his colleague Edward Morley , he performed in 1887 the Michelson-Morley experiment to detect the motion of the Earth through the postulated ether (a medium believed to be necessary for the propagation of light). The failure of the experiment indicated the nonexistence of the ether, and led Albert Einstein to his theory of relativity. Michelson was the first American to be awarded a Nobel prize, in 1907.
He invented the Michelson interferometer to detect any difference in the velocity of light in two directions at right angles. The negative result of the Michelson-Morley experiment demonstrated that the velocity of light is constant whatever the motion of the observer. Michelson also made a precise measurement of the speed of light.
Michelson was born in Strelno (now Strzelno, Poland); his family emigrated to the USA and Michelson attended the US Naval Academy at Annapolis. Later he studied in Europe at Berlin and Paris. He was professor at the Case School of Applied Science in Cleveland, Ohio, 1882-89, and at Chicago 1892-1929.
Michelson first experimented with his interferometer in 1881. The presence of ether would have caused a change in the interference pattern, but he could detect none. In collaboration with Morley, he constructed a much more sensitive interferometer, but again found no change.
