Otto Fritz Meyerhof was born on April 12, 1884, in Hannover. He was the son of Felix Meyerhof, a merchant of that city and his wife Bettina May. Soon after his birth his family moved to Berlin, where he went to the Wilhelms Gymnasium (classical secondary school). Leaving school at the age of 14, he was attacked, at the age of 16, by kidney trouble and had to spend a long time in bed. During this period of enforced inactivity he was much influenced by his mother's constant companionship. He read much, wrote poetry, and went through a period of much artistic and mental development. After he had matriculated, he studied medicine at Freiburg Berlin , Strasbourg, and Heidelberg.
In 1909 he graduated in medicine with a thesis on a psychiatric subject and devoted himself for a time to psychology and philosophy, publishing a book entitled (Contributions to the psychological theory of mental disturbances) and an essay on Goethes Methoden der Naturforschung (Goethe's methods of scientific research). Under the influence of Otto Warburg , however, who was then at Heidelberg, he became more and more interested in cell physiology. After working for a short time on physical chemistry with Bredig at Heidelberg, Meyerhof spent some time in the laboratory of the Heidelberg Clinic and at the Zoological Station at Naples. In 1912 he went to

A History of the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research Otto Meyerhof and the Physiology Department: the Birth of Modern Biochemistry
Ludolf von Krehl's search for colleagues who would integrate the then quite separate disciplines of the natural sciences under the umbrella of biomedical research led him to Otto Meyerhof. Meyerhof's study of intermediate metabolism involved a mix of physiology, pharmacology, physics and pathology. His already well-known successes with the study of muscle physiological chemistry, for which he had won a Nobel Prize in 1922, made him a logical choice for head of the KWImF's proposed Physiology Department. The years Meyerhof spent at the KWImF represent the most important and productive phase of his brilliant career. Indeed, some scientific historians, including Thomas Kuhn, believe the work during the 1930s in the laboratories of Meyerhof, Parnas, Embden, Warburg and a few others was the mark of true scientific revolution. While in Heidelberg, Meyerhof and his assistants published over 200 articles and played a central role in piecing together the complex puzzle of glycolysis - a major milestone in the study of intermediary metabolism. Meyerhof and his colleagues not only discovered a major proportion of the chemical compounds involved in this metabolic pathway, but played a key role in determining how and in which distinct sequence those compounds chemically interact. In the process, they pioneered our understanding of how energy is biochemically transformed, stored and released for work in the cell.

ARRANGEMENT
The papers of Otto Meyerhof are organized in five series and include Letters to Gottfried Meyerhof, 1934-1951; Correspondence with American Scientists, 1941-1951; Correspondence with European Scientists, 1943-1951; Professional papers, 1913-1951; and Personal papers, 1900- 1980. The letters to Gottfried Meyerhof are arranged in reverse chronological order while the correspondence with American and European scientists are arranged alphabetically. The principles of provenance were followed in organizing these series. Because many of the European scientists ultimately transplanted their careers to the United States as a result of World War II, it is advisable to check both series for a particular scientist. Access is granted in accordance with the "Protocols for the University Archives and Records Center," 1990.

http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/M/Meyerhof/1.htm
Meyerhof, Otto Fritz German-born US biochemist who carried out research into the metabolic processes involved in the action of muscles. For this work he shared the 1922 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine.
Meyerhof was born in Hanover and studied at a number of German universities. From 1912 he worked at the University of Kiel, becoming professor 1918. He headed a department specially created for him at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Biology in Berlin 1924-29, when he moved to Heidelberg. As a result of Adolf Hitler's rise to power in the 1930s, Meyerhof left Germany 1938 and went to Paris, where he became director of research at the Institut de Biologie Physiochimique. In 1940, when France fell to Germany in the early part of World War II, he fled to the USA, and was given a professorship at the University of Pennsylvania.
In 1920 Meyerhof showed that, in anaerobic conditions, the amounts of glycogen metabolized and of lactic acid produced in a contracting muscle are proportional to the tension in the muscle. He also demonstrated that 20-25% of the lactic acid is oxidized during the muscle's recovery period and that energy produced by this oxidation is used to convert the remainder of the lactic acid back to glycogen. Meyerhof introduced the term glycolysis to describe the anaerobic degradation of glycogen to lactic acid, and showed the cyclic nature of energy transformations in living cells. The complete metabolic pathway of glycolysis is known as the Embden-Meyerhof pathway after Meyerhof and Gustav George Embden (1874-1933).

Meyerhof, Otto Fritz
