Francois Mauriac
Francois Mauriac
He belonged to the lineage of French Catholic writers who examined the ugly realities of modern life in the light of eternity. His major novels are sombre, austere psychological dramas set in an atmosphere of unrelieved tension. At the heart of every work Mauriac placed a religious soul grappling with the problems of sin, grace, and salvation.
In 1933 Mauriac was elected to the French Academy. His later novels include the partly autobiographical Le Mystere Frontenac (1933; The Frontenac Mystery), Les Chemins de la mer (1939; The Unknown Sea), and La Pharisienne (1941; A Woman of the Pharisees), an analysis of religious hypocrisy and the desire for domination. In 1938 Mauriac turned to writing plays, beginning auspiciously with Asmodee (performed 1937), in which the hero is a heinous, domineering character who controls weaker souls. Such is also the theme of the less successful Les Mal Aimes (1945; "The Poorly Loved"). A highly sensitive man, Mauriac felt compelled to justify himself before his critics. Le Romancier et ses personnages (1933; "The Novelist and His Characters") and the four volumes of his Journal (1934-51), followed by three volumes of Memoires (1959-67), tell much of his intentions, his methods, and his reactions to contemporary moral values. Mauriac tackled the difficult dilemma of the Christian writerhow to portray evil in human nature without placing temptation before his readersin Dieu et Mammon (1929; God and Mammon, 1936).

Francois Mauriac (1885—1970). A francia olvasók legszélesebb rétegeiben — olykor meroben más okokból — szakadatlanul
    http://www.literatura.hu/irok/xxszazad/euproza/mauriac.htm
Francois Mauriac A francia olvasók legszélesebb rétegeiben — olykor merõben más okokból — szakadatlanul népszerû író, ismeretterjesztõ, harcos újságíró. A mûveltek, a legigényesebbek tisztelik lélektani mélységéért, árnyalt jellemábrázoló képességéért, a társadalmi viszonyok alapos és szemléletes elemzéséért. A nagy tömegeket lebilincseli könyvei cselekményének a mozgalmassága, érdekessége. A tanárok rámutatnak stílusa szépségeire, nyelvi gazdagságára, kifejezésmódja szabatosságára, közérthetõségére.

Men resemble great deserted palaces: the owner occupies only a few rooms and has closed-off wings where he never ventures. Every novel worthy of the name is like another planet, whether large or small, which has its own laws just as it has its own flora and fauna. I write whenever it suits me. During a creative period I write every day; a novel should not be interrupted. When I cease to be carried along, when I no longer feel as though I were taking down dictation, I stop. Mauriac belonged to the long tradition of French Roman Catholic writers, who examined the problems of good and evil in human nature and in the world. "His characters do not have their literal counterpart in the world of everyday experience. Here he breaks with the naturalistic tradition with which in so many ways he is closely identified. He is primarly the chronicler not of human actions separate and distinct from himself but his own real and imagined life." (Michael F. Moloney in Mauriac's work show infleunce from several writers. He wrote studies on Racine and Marcel Proust, but Pascal was perhaps the most important thinker for him. Mauriac's style was poetic, full of suggestion. He wrote "I believe that only poetry counts and that only through the poetical elements enclosed in a work of art of any genre whatever does that work deserve to last. A great novelist is first of all a great poet." Mauriac's early works depicted the struggle of passion and conscience, but after a spiritual crisis he solved this
