Hijo de un capitán de barco, él mismo se hizo a la mar en su juventud, por lo cual muchos de los temas de sus libros tienen que ver con su infancia solitaria y con los seis años que pasó navegando. Escribió unas veinte novelas y numerosas colecciones de ensayos, poemas y narraciones breves, aunque fuera de Suecia se le conoce más por su epopeya lírica Aniara (1956), un ciclo de 103 poemas sobre el viaje de una nave espacial con 8.000 humanos a bordo, que escapan de una Tierra destruida por una explosión nuclear. Del resto de su producción destaca el libro de viajes Viajes sin rumbo (1933), el autobiográfico Las ortigas florecen (1935) y la novela El camino (1948). Hans far, som först var sjökapten men sedan sökte familjens försörjning som lanthandlare, dog i lungsot när Harry var sex år. Modern övergav hemmet och for till USA. Genom socknens fattigvårdsstyrelse utackorderades syskonskaran till olika hem. Harry fick så under sin skoltid pröva på många fosterhem. Dessa bittra år har gett stoffet till hans roman Nässlorna blomma Vid 14 - årsålder rymde han, gav sig ut på luffarfärder i Syd – och Västsverige och tog sedan hyra på en båt. Dessa upplevelser har gett bakgrunden till romanen Vägen ut I sex år arbetade han som sjöman på de stora haven. Under ett par år vistades han i Sydamerika. Like Melville or Conrad, Martinson spent years at sea before becoming a writer. In 1974 Martinson shared the Nobel Prize for Literature with Eyvind Johnson . Martinson's poetry is characterized by linguistic innovations, precision of observation, and a brilliant employment of metaphors. Där kom han att bo med makan Ingrid Lindcrantz och de två döttrarna Eva och Harriet till år 1970 då de flyttade till Stockholm. Gustafsberg i Vårdinge socken beskrivs som ett vackert beläget ställe. Vid bryggan låg en äkta blekingseka och bakom det gamla rymliga tvåvåningshuset stod en knuttimrad, rödmålad bod. Den kom sedermera att utvecklas till ett slags privatmuseum. Harry ville återskapa sin fars blekingska handelsbod och sina år till sjöss. Han fyllde boden med diverse dekorerade plåtburkar för kaffe, te och kryddor, cigarr askar, tändsticksaskar, vackra etiketter, buteljer, bokmärken mm. Även hans marina intresse kom till uttryck genom signalflaggor, tågvirke, flöten mm. Denna samling finns nu på Martinsonsmuseet i Jämshög i Blekinge (H M s födelsesocken)
